It feels like autumn!

And it’s only August 😩 I’m quite sick of this weather to be honest

I’m still finding it too warm and am looking forward to autumn! I find these weather threads interesting, as people seem to have such different perceptions of what is too hot/cold. I often wonder whether it’s genetic - I’m Celtic/Nordic with red hair, light eyes and very fair skin - a sunny 18 degrees is about as hot as I like it! I would be sweltering in a jumper at that temperature.

Hedjwitch · 03/08/2025 10:10

Low 20s in Central Scotland and still living in shorts and tee shirts here. Been lovely to have warmth and sunshine. Autumn can sod off.

Why would I be worried? That heatwave patch through most of June and July was glorious!

Why should you be worried about average summer temperatures rising year after year? Are you joking?

AutumnLover1989 · 03/08/2025 10:11

Perfect weather for me. Much prefer Autumn to sweating my tatas off 😔

DartmoorWanderer · 03/08/2025 10:21

K0OLA1D · 03/08/2025 09:43

Its not cold is it. Its just cooler than 30.

21 degrees is our summer with the occasional heatwave thrown in.

It’s definitely cold down in Devon today!

I'm already regretting my choice of socks and trainers over sandals today. It's proper hot in Kent

Canonlythinkofthisone · 03/08/2025 10:25

Bloody love Autumn.
Summer holiday for us is not for another few weeks but I pay to go abroad for sunshine and insect bites. 🤣
In the UK I adore cooler days, genuinely can't wait for darker evenings, leaves falling, pumpkins, Halloween, bonfire night. It's 100% the best time of year (IMO)

Nope, not for me. It's fun when you have small children, but I have been there, done that and got the T-shirt. I love an Indian summer, and hope we get one this year.

It would be useful for posters to say where they are as the "it's 26 dgrees and sunny here" isn't very helpful. We have hundreds of different microclimates in the UK and it is currently a cloudy 19 degrees in my part of Pennine South Yorkshire, and I have just driven back from Hebden Bridge where it is pissing down.

DappledThings · 03/08/2025 12:38

I don't know what the temperature is but I am wildly overdressed in jeans and trainers on the Kent coast. Even with the breeze on the cliffs it's meltingly hot.

Forecast for Hebden Bridge is going back to 22/23 and sun over next few days so definitely still summer there too

cardibach · 03/08/2025 12:42

Again, flowers have gone over earlier and fruits ripened because spring was early. They’ve completed their life cycle early. They aren’t doing it because it’s autumn.

MyLimeGuide · 03/08/2025 12:45

Its usually really hot June/July and then cools down August in UK August so far has been average temp expected for this time of year. Im pleased the heatwaves are over!

According to the met office the maximum temperature here next week will be 20 degrees Sad
At least I won't need to shave my legs as I won't be in dresses at those temperatures.

Yes I'm contemplating putting some of my work dresses away, but I've no autumn clothes!

i am loving it. After the hell of the heat waves it’s just glorious and I’m sad it appears to be going away next week. Roll on autumn!

You get petrichor when it rains on hot tarmac. It doesn’t happen in autumn.
Cool and damp on a summer morning after rain isn’t autumnal. Many wild flowers are spring flowering. Many berries have a ripening season from mid July onwards. They’re a bit on the earlier side of that this year because spring was early so they’ve had time to ripen, not because it’s autumn.

According to Collins English Dictionary:

"petrichorin British English
(ˈpɛtrɪˌkɔː )

noun
a sweet smell that is produced when rain falls on parched earth
Collins English Dictionary. Copyright © HarperCollins Publishers"

According to Merriam Webster:

"petrichor
noun
pe·tri·chor ˈpe-trə-ˌkȯr

: a distinctive, earthy, usually pleasant odor that is associated with rainfall especially when following a warm, dry period "

No mention of tarmac or a particular season.

So what I said then? Only when the earth is parched and warm?

15minutesaday · 03/08/2025 16:37

@cardibach Actually you said hot tarmac.

Does it really matter? Confused

PolitePoster · 03/08/2025 16:52

Rained overnight and early this morning here in Cumbria, but the sun was out by lunchtime and it was 21/22° on our patio. Lovely!

swampwitch0 · 03/08/2025 17:06

I cannot wait! 🍂🍁
It's rained here today but its warm too 😖

hopelessbusiness · 03/08/2025 17:20

Drizzly, misty and cloudy in Cornwall, and a balmy (barmy?) 18°. Yesterday we had sunshine and it felt like summer - obviously a short-lived thing!
I'm one of the rarities on MN that likes sunshine and heat and bloody loathes rain and puddle suits...

I'm with you. I love temperatures around 25 degrees. I like to be able to not spend 10 minutes layering up before I leave the house. I like being able to wear undies and a dress plus sandals and be ready to leave the house. I like not having to put the heating on and not having to snuggle under a cosy blanket drinking hot chocolate by candlelight (I hope I have put all the cliches in).

Disclaimer: I don't live in London and I commute in a car with aircon to an office with aircon.

swampwitch0 · 03/08/2025 18:11

I've never loved the heat but since peri menopause I can't tolerate it at all...it makes me feel ill :(
No air-conditioning, sadly.
When we holiday we go north! :)

Dresses! Yes! The joy of cotton dresses and sandals! I have sooo many, and they come out for about 2 weeks every year, before being shut away til next summer. Sad times.

LostGhost · 02/08/2025 20:31

It's autumnal and i'm loving it.

I detest the heat/summer/endless evenings, my SAD has been absolutely horrific this year. No energy or motivation to do anything and the routine goes completely out the window.

Bring on the cooler weather where you can actually go outside without being a puddle of sweat in 10 seconds.

This. It was horrible when it was 30 degrees. It was impossible to do anything without sweating. I found it impossible to sleep so i was exhausted during the day. To top it off my neighbours were having parties in the garden until the small hours. Now that it is cooler i have more energy.
