I couldn’t sleep last night, worrying about a Reform government

1000 replies

Cluborange666 · 01/08/2025 09:15

I am really worried. I think they’ll wreck the economy. I’ve got a few years left to pay off my mortgage from my job that deals with immigrants. I don’t want our pensions to tank. I don’t want my sons’ lives to be messed around. I worry about more racism, the more ‘voice’ that Reform get. I live in a very multicultural city and non-white people tell me that they are experiencing more overt racism. It makes me feel very insecure about the future.

wish Labour would do more to show that they are on the side of ordinary people as I think that’s what is driving this (I’m a Labour voter). I don’t think the creation of Your Party will help, just give Reform more advantages.

Sigh. Happy to be told I’m unreasonable as I think the future looks bleak.

So Rishi’s time as chancellor during Covid didn’t damage his chance? The fact he was the 5th Tory pm or whatever without going to the country first didn’t damage his chances? The partying while the lockdowns were going on didn’t damage his chances?
It was because the media went after his wife for dodging tax. Oops hope Farage is squeaky clean then 😂

TruckDiver · 02/08/2025 12:59

I actually think Corbyn is looking better than before PR-wise. He won’t get in power but he and his party could get quite a few votes.

Corbyn's interesting because he seems to have rejected the whole conscious PR focus idea altogether. I've actually met him, in a relaxed social setting, and he was exactly the same as he comes across on TV.

That was one reason so many Labour voters voted him into the leadership, over Yvette Cooper et al who just looked like wind up robots next to him. But it's also probably why he's been such an easy victim for the Tory media.

Partygate was nonsense too. If anyone says Labour get a hard time in the press look at Cumming’s successful revenge in the form of that.

Sunak was popular as chancellor anyway, during Covid for sure.

On your earlier question all the things Labour posters declared would be better are being tested in reality and not everyone feels as you do. In fact many now can’t stand Starmer and Labour.

If they continue as they are it may well lead to a Reform win.

You don’t know that about @LevoitPotatoso better off not implying it’s so obviously not in good faith.

@EasternStandardthank you. My post was not intended in bad faith, simply responded to the OP

@PandoraSocksyou assumed it was in bad faith for no reason at all other than your own beliefs and went for me, which completely put me off trying to engage in any meaningful discussion.

Arguably this is now more a forum for hurling insults and spiteful rejoinders but occasionally, there are posters from all sides of the political spectrum who attempt to share info and listen.

He’ll be fine for a while. He might get the new younger voters too. His statement is clear and direct.

We have a few problems and he has identified one and focussed on it.

It’s probably why he rates well with Reformers, they too want a problem addressed.

On the robot thing against Labour’s repeated lines at every interview - every time, further faster, fixing foundations whatever both Corbyn and Farage speak more naturally.

It’s well known that labour get a hard time in the press, you can’t think that’s not the case.
in the case of Cummings, if you deal with devil and all that. It needed to come out, because it was disgustingl. Rishi is not blameless either as he knew what was going on and he buggered about with Covid loans and all the Covid’s lanes for Michelle Mone to get involved in. So no I don’t think he was a good chancellor.
i think that labour were very clear when they got in that there was a lot of work to do, I am not necessarily happy with the way things are going but there was no alternative in 2024, due to the complete destruction of the Tory party.
Anyway time will tell, but Reform is not the answer to the economic situation for sure and they have no idea what to do with small boats.

That’s a very interesting point about prospective 16- and 17-year-old voters.

I have a funny feeling that some private Labour polling might show disproportionate numbers backing Reform and, more likely, Corbyn. Because young people are easier to sell improbable dreams to. Which may well get Sir Keir to back off the idea.

Labour has this weird idea that the young identify with it. They’re stuck in their 1980s childhoods.

No I don’t think that’s the case. Not comparatively when looking at partygate and moves against Sunak. And the pre GE press which was very soft on Starmer. Labour have a bit of a complex over this.

i think partygate deserved the press it got, so did Sunak. I also think that press knew the Tories were finished at that point.

I hurled no insults at you, nor was I spiteful to you. I hardly "went" for you.

I made a sarky post with a silly gif welcoming you to MN. You can report it if you think I crossed a line. MNHQ may well agree with you.

However, I apologise for having offended you so deeply.

Wow, really? Interesting how no one is ever a Reform voter when details are asked for.

Isobarre · 02/08/2025 13:43

Don't you know that they only vote Reform to get Labour out. Without any thought of what they stand for. Yeah right.

I've been clear through the entire thread, and across other threads that I'm a conservative voter who previously voted for Labour. What other details would you like?

Goldenbear · 02/08/2025 13:46

SilenceOfTheTimTams · 02/08/2025 12:27

Starmer is certainly to the right of Corbyn but in some ways - not all - this is a significantly left-wing government, certainly if you compare it to Blair’s New Labour.

The problem Starmer has is that it’s North London dinner party left, not pit village left.

Starmer is destroying Labour with his stupidity, his woodenness and his appalling voguish politics.

And as a figurehead Starmer has none of the charisma and brains of Blair or Johnson, the genuineness of Brown or Major or Sunak, or the backbone of Thatcher. He’s a weedy little unlikeable man with nothing in his mind apart from misplaced self-promotion and ambition.

To be fair to Starmer though, post Thatcher, when has "pit village left' ever won an election in this country; especially with the right wing press having so much influence and money?

You are "conservative voter" with a small c?

But you can spot a Reform voter from sight anyway so why would they try to hide it?
