I couldn’t sleep last night, worrying about a Reform government

I am really worried. I think they’ll wreck the economy. I’ve got a few years left to pay off my mortgage from my job that deals with immigrants. I don’t want our pensions to tank. I don’t want my sons’ lives to be messed around. I worry about more racism, the more ‘voice’ that Reform get. I live in a very multicultural city and non-white people tell me that they are experiencing more overt racism. It makes me feel very insecure about the future.

wish Labour would do more to show that they are on the side of ordinary people as I think that’s what is driving this (I’m a Labour voter). I don’t think the creation of Your Party will help, just give Reform more advantages.

Sigh. Happy to be told I’m unreasonable as I think the future looks bleak.

You think THEY'LL wreck the economy?

Catsandcheese · 01/08/2025 09:34

bigknickersbigknockers · 01/08/2025 09:31

Labour only have themselves to blame. Unless Labour actually listen to the electorate Reform will be in power. Stop benefits for illegal immigrants and stop boats rocking up on the south coast daily and maybe Reform will be held back. Until then Reform is a done deal.

I am afraid if you really think that 25000 migrants arriving in boats is the biggest problem the UK has right now, you can’t be helped.

I agree, it's terrifying. I'm hoping Farage will run away if he thinks they might actually win, as being PM will be far too much work for him. Without him I think/hope they'd struggle.

Labour need better PR managers, fast.

Labour don't need more spindoctors! They just need to be competent.

They will at least temporarily - the markets will fall hugely as they are so untested.

skippy67 · 01/08/2025 09:35

I really hope they get in. So we can see what Farage&co are really about on the world stage. It'll be wonderful to watch.😅

I think its hugely important for hearts and minds. Particularly if you live in an area that's affected.

Ok. Perhaps consider that human beings vary widely in their response to things? Hopefully this is just a blip for the OP.

You going on at me, isn't going to make me change my mind, or my stance. No matter how much you would like it to. Other posters have said similar things to me: go and poke at one of them, and leave me alone. Not continually arguing back and forth with you, and won't be responding to you again on this thread.

Fragmentedbrain · 01/08/2025 09:36

For me the main worry is getting rid of employment and Equalities protections. I know we see a lot of bullshit in the news but none of us want a country where you can be openly fired for getting pregnant or having a heart attack.

It’s not a PR problem, they have more soundbites than competent policies.

Catsandcheese · 01/08/2025 09:36

It will be great. Liz Truss on steroids. We have 4 years to pay off our mortgages 😂

I think it might be actually. This country is about to blow. I'm really quite concerned as Labour just seem to want to control social media so people don't read things about immigration. Rather than actually solving the problem which would calm things down.

Cluborange666 · 01/08/2025 09:36

I voted Labour, as did most people I know. I think most of us are disappointed but none of us are right wing. We’d like to see more Labour policies which actually improve the lives of ordinary people.
Letting the ultra right take charge doesn’t bode well for me, especially since they keep referring to Trump’s US and how they are taking notes. It won’t go well for women. I’m past pregnancy age but I wouldn’t want to be a young woman under a Reform government. Labour being bad won’t make Reform good.

Agree.

I would love it to be different, but the amount of unrest in this country is insane and shouldn't be underestimated.

Ah you mean like Labour who, by the criteria they accused Truss of crashing the economy, have done so twice??

I know right. I don't understand Labour at all, and why they promised to take action with illegal immigrants, (3 months ago!) but have done fuck-all so far. Do they really think just SAYING this (and doing fuck-all) is honestly going to make people vote for them next time?🙄

What ultra right policies have Reform put forward that will be bad for pregnant women?

LoveItaly · 01/08/2025 09:17

I wouldn’t worry about Reform wrecking the economy. Given the speed that Labour are wrecking it there won’t be much left of it anyway.

My first thought.

And most of us don’t to be fair. But it’s the dehumanising rhetoric surrounding migration that is absolutely awful.
It is a very difficult problem to solve but there’s no legal route and claims need to be processed.
farage has one interest, and it is this ‘illegal’ immigration. But you know we have doctors and nurses striking/ considering striking, we have still a cost of living crisis, food banks needed by working people, child poverty, a massive problem in social care, waiting lists at hospitals. He is in no way equipped to deal with issues that are most pressing

I think immigration, followed closely by the economy will decide the next election. Labour are failing miserably on both.

Quirkswork · 01/08/2025 09:47

Ok. I'd be against any change to the abortion law. Let's see if it's in their manifesto.

Not sure interest rates are as high at the moment. In fact mortgage rates are on a downward trajectory fortunately.

I said by the criteria that Labour used to claim Truss crashed the economy ie bond/guilt spikes. They demanded her resignation.

ExpressCheckout · 01/08/2025 09:53

If you are a Labour supporter (I'm not btw) and you want them to win next time around then you need to be lobbying your local Labour MP or party hard. I want our governments to be successful even if I didn't vote for them. The current Labour government is, however, an incoherent mess.

Tax policy (employer NI) has slowed and stopped recruitment in many sectors. The threat of Raynor's reckless employment bill will compound the damage. They are wasting time attacking Reform (i.e. the silly story this week about Jimmy Savile) and they are wasting time trying to please the Labour Left.

At the moment, my guess for the next election is Reform winning the most seats, but fewer seats than Labour, LD and SNP combined. This could mean that - if they get their act together, we could have a Centre Left coalition, not a Reform government. It's too early to tell what is happening with the Tories.

But four years is a long time, and I also suspect that international affairs could overwhelm everything (a Chinese attack on Taiwan will impact everyone far more than folk realise). So, Labour needs to retreat from foreign affairs (especially the Middle East) and be laser-focused on UK voters.
