I couldn’t sleep last night, worrying about a Reform government

Cluborange666 · 01/08/2025 09:15

I am really worried. I think they’ll wreck the economy. I’ve got a few years left to pay off my mortgage from my job that deals with immigrants. I don’t want our pensions to tank. I don’t want my sons’ lives to be messed around. I worry about more racism, the more ‘voice’ that Reform get. I live in a very multicultural city and non-white people tell me that they are experiencing more overt racism. It makes me feel very insecure about the future.

wish Labour would do more to show that they are on the side of ordinary people as I think that’s what is driving this (I’m a Labour voter). I don’t think the creation of Your Party will help, just give Reform more advantages.

Sigh. Happy to be told I’m unreasonable as I think the future looks bleak.

You are right, you aren't being funny. And I have been here long enough to know there was a time when people would play the ball and not the woman, even in political discussions.

The AS type stuff and bot calling ramped up from Labour in last few years.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 02/08/2025 10:45

Well, that's up to you, meanwhile I'll just point out the hypocrisy.

Yes, I don't know how many times I was accused of being a Russian bot last year for holding the extreme position that I believed the Conservatives were the least worst option.

Jennps · 02/08/2025 10:48

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 02/08/2025 09:32

Yes, I also think Labour supporters are significant in the Labour party's lack of support.

Rolling out insults in response to genuine concerns. Or making lawyer like answers which are technically correct - illegal immigrants don't get benefits - to distract from the burden on the state from the 25,000 new illegal arrivals so far this year - is the kind of arrogance that people find infuriating. Othering voters of other parties by suggesting that they are a different kind of lesser people - is a tactic boringly familiar to Conservative voters.

But yes, this superiority complex is pushing people to Reform. I'm sure Nigel is very grateful.

Edited

This is very well put. Saying illegal migrants don’t get taxpayer cash support is a lie. The pretend progressives will use the world benefits because they basically think everyone else is stupid. Like people don’t know what taxpayer support is. We have 100k people arriving a year being given everything for free, and this is completely factual statement. There is nothing racist about it.

On top of that legal migration is made up on average of people who also get state support. They never have and never will contribute enough in taxes to pay for their use of public services and that of their larger than average families. On top of that, within 5 years, they bring in their elderly relatives, who also require housing, health and pension allowances - having never contributed a penny to the system.

The line that we need migration to staff care homes is a complete lie and a farce. We don’t need it, our incompetent and politicians choose to do it. We have millions in out of work benefits. On top of that we are bringing in millions of net taking workers, who within 5 years are able to claim full welfare also and just to add to it bring in their elderly relatives too.

If you call out this insanity, it’s considered racist. But it is simply unsustainable and an abuse of the system, mostly by our ruling classes.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 02/08/2025 10:53

Yes, and I can tell you from personal experience that this pisses off no-one more than the actual hard working migrants who are net contributors in this country and are expected to play a human shield for incompetent government policies and Trojan horse for those who contribute fuck all.

I was called a Tory twat because I chose to send my DD to an independent school cos our nearest state secondary has a 20% 5 x GCSE pass rate.
My DD has been called a privileged c*unt.

Both times by Labour voters

Do you have any stats to back that assertion up @jennps ? Many visas will include a no recourse to public funds condition.

That's awful Twistyizzy. There is just no need for any of that.

Anyone who is not earning enough to be a net contributor, including supporting their non working spouse and multiple children, is getting taxpayer support.

Agreed but they just can't help themselves and then try to take the moral highground on everything. As seen on this thread

Ha same. My god HQ, bot, the insanity of it.

People really wanted this Starmer lot. If they tank out to Reform I won’t be surprised.

Yes, because reporting famously rewinds time and renders the insult unhurtful.

Good God. If only there was so much outrage about the racism on this site as there has been to my (checks notes) childish posts.

Carry on putting the boot in. I really don't care.

Eta: my slightly silly posts from last night are still there. None of them were offensive or personal attacks. They were just silly. Do report them if you disagree.

Edited

I haven't seen any racist posts. If you have then report them and they will be deleted.

Do you think that wanting boat crossings to stop is racist?

Do you consider there to be difference between free use of public services vs benefits? How do you think public services are funded?

And in any case they are able to claim any and all benefits from within 5 years of being here. So it is also a lie to say that immigrants are not entitled to benefits.

BIossomtoes · 02/08/2025 11:08

Do you consider there to be difference between free use of public services vs benefits?

Obviously there’s a difference. The vast majority of people who use public services free at the point of delivery are taxpayers.

Goldenbear · 02/08/2025 11:10

Bumblebee72 · 02/08/2025 10:35

That is a real life version of the traditional difference in political views through isn't it? Labour voters expect "Nanny" to sort out their lives, Conservative voters expect the state to stay out of what they do as much as possible.

This post is indicative of the problem with politics now, reporting on it, discussing it, it always comes down to simplistic finger wagging.

I didn't even vote for the Labour party but there is a determination on these threads (you have to wonder why) to reduce these discussions to culture wars. Posters are expected to be angry about everything and suspicious and cynical about others who disagree with that outlook as surely anything other than self interest is not real. This thread was started in honour of that cynicism.

My view on voting for Reform is that people should think hard before doing so as life will not improve with a Reform government.

The pp probably means voting intention which in some cases is over 30%

Thankyou yes I did mean that, not MPs or I would have put MPs.

Where do you think the money to fund it comes from? Is it the pickers at the treasury who go out and harvest £100 notes off the magic money tree each morning.

And where is the sense in bringing in people to give them free services who never have and never will contribute enough. While actively driving out people who on a net basis are funding it.

And no we don’t need these workers, we have millions on out of work benefits already here.

2dogsandabudgie · 02/08/2025 11:19

@Goldenbear People are fed up with Labour and Conservatives. It has been building for a long long time. It started under Blair's New Labour.

You would have thought that the Lib Dems would have taken advantage and started to make their party a serious contender but they seem to have disappeared into obscurity. So we have got Reform, whether or not they will make a difference needs to be seen but I think people are willing to take that chance.

When the Tories were in MN was a relentless stream of attacks on supposed corruption and backscratching, racism, neo-fascist treatment of the poor and disabled, millions dead from austerity, and on and on.

I certainly agree that among the criticism of Labour on here there’s some nonsense talked. But I’m not taking any lectures on misrepresentation of politics from anyone who backs the present government.

Hedgehogbrown · 02/08/2025 11:23

How many seats did they get? 6? How would they ever in a million years get over 250 seats needed to win an election. Especially with our voting system. It is so far from probable. Farage has always had too much air time, and now you are all convincing yourself that they can win an election! It's ridiculous. Give your head a wobble. You should be more worried about Labour trying to mimic reform and treating immigrants like shit. Anyone worried needs to write to their MP so they know that bashing foreigners won't win them everyone's vote.

EmpressoftheMundane · 02/08/2025 11:24

I would prefer a conservative government. I hope they will be in a better place by then. I actually quite like Kemi Badenoch.

I would consider voting Reform in my area if it kept thd Labour candidate out. But I feel cautious about Reform…they lack practical experience.

From my perspective Labour are doing a terrible job and causing serious long term damage. They are ideologically driven and don’t care about collateral damage. Seems to be a feature rather than a bug for them.
