I couldn’t sleep last night, worrying about a Reform government

I am really worried. I think they’ll wreck the economy. I’ve got a few years left to pay off my mortgage from my job that deals with immigrants. I don’t want our pensions to tank. I don’t want my sons’ lives to be messed around. I worry about more racism, the more ‘voice’ that Reform get. I live in a very multicultural city and non-white people tell me that they are experiencing more overt racism. It makes me feel very insecure about the future.

wish Labour would do more to show that they are on the side of ordinary people as I think that’s what is driving this (I’m a Labour voter). I don’t think the creation of Your Party will help, just give Reform more advantages.

Sigh. Happy to be told I’m unreasonable as I think the future looks bleak.

I agree. There seems to be a huge rise in racist and misogynist attitudes in the last few years and Reform won't help.

Also, they have no clue how to deal with immigration and so that will be a big lie, like Brexit. I agree that 25,000 refugees seems like a lot, but I fail to see how Reform will stop it, other than basically ensuring that they are homeless and penniless so driven into crime.

LoveItaly · 01/08/2025 09:17

I wouldn’t worry about Reform wrecking the economy. Given the speed that Labour are wrecking it there won’t be much left of it anyway.

crossstitchingnana · 01/08/2025 09:18

It is worrying, I also fear a Reform government next time as Labour are IMO doing an awful job. But... we can only do something at a micro level (ie talk to friends etc about the reality of a Reform government, or to challenge racism in our day-to-day lives), whether they get in or not is outside our control.

I would suggest you limit worrying to 15 minutes a day and then distract yourself, take some deep breaths and look around you. Reality is they may NOT get in so you're worrying about nothing, live your life as no-one knows what's round the corner.

Edited

Unfortunately Labour are also clueless with regard to immigration as the number of illegal immigrants arriving by boat shows, Conservative policies actually seemed to be refit, now just heading back up. Unless they get a grip, reforms chances will increase, as, like it or not, illegal immigration is a massive concern for enough people for it to sway how they vote

LavenderBlue19 · 01/08/2025 09:20

I agree, it's terrifying. I'm hoping Farage will run away if he thinks they might actually win, as being PM will be far too much work for him. Without him I think/hope they'd struggle.

Labour need better PR managers, fast.

Zov · 01/08/2025 09:21

You couldn't sleep for worrying about it? Really? I don't like Reform, and think they're dreadful, but that sounds OTT even to me. Seriously, do you usually worry about things like this? So much so that you can't sleep. Things that are asbolutely out of your control?

Notmyreality · 01/08/2025 09:21

Really? You couldn’t sleep because you were worried about a hypothetical future Reform government?
Give over.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/08/2025 09:21

I’m hoping with the rise of these new parties that Labour change the voting system to PR or something.

Noone has any ideas of how to stop it. Perhaps if we were still in the EU we could have had more of a working alliance with France.

I actually think the Conservatives will have a surge if they replace Kemi Badenoch.

Worry about the next four years first.

Sometimes people do, yes. Might be a particularly tough time in OPs life for other reasons.

Cynic17 · 01/08/2025 09:23

There are plenty of us who worried about a Labour Government - and are being proved right - but the reality is that there is absolutely no point in worrying about things outside our control. Yes, we can vote and make our choice, but ultimately we are stuck with whatever the democratic process gives us. And life still goes on, much the same.....

Maybe you need to stop watching TV news, OP, concentrate on your own life and not stress about things that might never happen.

Exactly this. Labour has proven pretty useless so far, and despite the promise to curb the number of illegal boats (after Reform wiped the floor with them several months back at the local elections,) they have done NOTHING, and more are coming into the UK than ever. This Labour Government is the worst we have ever had IMO.

You think all they need is better PR??? FFS Phillipson already spends £90m of the Education budget on her comms team. Think of how that money could be used to improve state schools! But no, you want MORE taxpayer money to be spent on PR?

Labour need to stop fucking everything up, then they wouldn't need PR!

Well if that's the case, then surely she would have said in her OP. All she mentioned is not being able to sleep 'worrying' about REFORM getting into power, which is bizarre and OTT (IMO.)

Radioundermypillow · 01/08/2025 09:27

I agree that Labour have been really disappointing. And seeing Starmer sitting with Trump, looking like he'd been given a mild sedative, gave me the rage

Don’t disagree, think Sunak had a lot of potential, unfortunately the rest of the party had become so corrupt they couldn’t survive

I dont think its bizarre to have a strong reaction to awful political parties getting into power.

That was the most frustrating and cringeworrhy thing I've seen in a very long time. Starmer was completely inept and kept buffering. He can't deal with anything that's not given to him in a pre-prepared script

bigknickersbigknockers · 01/08/2025 09:31

Labour only have themselves to blame. Unless Labour actually listen to the electorate Reform will be in power. Stop benefits for illegal immigrants and stop boats rocking up on the south coast daily and maybe Reform will be held back. Until then Reform is a done deal.

Good for you. I do think it is. Especially lying awake at night unable to sleep because of it.

Ok. Perhaps consider that human beings vary widely in their response to things? Hopefully this is just a blip for the OP.
