I couldn’t sleep last night, worrying about a Reform government

Cluborange666 · 01/08/2025 09:15

I am really worried. I think they’ll wreck the economy. I’ve got a few years left to pay off my mortgage from my job that deals with immigrants. I don’t want our pensions to tank. I don’t want my sons’ lives to be messed around. I worry about more racism, the more ‘voice’ that Reform get. I live in a very multicultural city and non-white people tell me that they are experiencing more overt racism. It makes me feel very insecure about the future.

wish Labour would do more to show that they are on the side of ordinary people as I think that’s what is driving this (I’m a Labour voter). I don’t think the creation of Your Party will help, just give Reform more advantages.

Sigh. Happy to be told I’m unreasonable as I think the future looks bleak.

If the current government was active in curbing illegal immigration, regenerating areas, generating industrial jobs in the North of England again, reducing crime, then Reform wouldn't have a chance. Sadly, the current government created the support for Reform.

Noone has any ideas of how to stop it. Perhaps if we were still in the EU we could have had more of a working alliance with France.

I actually think the Conservatives will have a surge if they replace Kemi Badenoch.

People over focus on the EU with this, those still in have migration issues. The only countries stopping it are taking hardline policy.

Don’t disagree, think Sunak had a lot of potential, unfortunately the rest of the party had become so corrupt they couldn’t survive

I agree. And talking about racism I think there was a fair bit directed at Rishi Sunak and family at the time.

Right. So you have no idea what he should have said. Fair enough.

I'm pretty confident someone else would have handled Trump differently. No I can't give a script of exactly what he should have said but he is the fucking Prime Minister, he should be able to handle a situation like that without looking like a low level junior banker getting a scolding from the CEO. If this is how he behaves on the world stage with other leaders then God fucking help us!

It goes back to the perpetual issue that he simply can't deal with challenge or without a script. We saw this in the recent filmed committee meetings when he was grilled about housing, he didn't have a script of soundbites to read so just floundered around. It's embarrassing for him and us.

Labour is terrified of dealing with immigration - as were the tories. If they make some attempt at it and unwind some of the mess they’ve made to the economy and actually were pro employment that would make a massive dent

I can see it in other Europe’s countries where people think they aren’t being listened to on immigration and just shouted down as bigots. The reaction to the cologne NYE attacks was shameful and should have been used to make things better rather than just sticking the collective head in the sand

dealing with immigration is hard

but I look at the new generation of grads and it’s hard. When I started in my grad scheme 20 years ago they didn’t sponsor visas. Now they do and over half the places have gone to Chinese students (from China). The grads I know are really struggling as there’s so much competition for roles now (and less roles)

MickGeorge22 · 01/08/2025 10:37

I absolutely don't want to see a reform government but honestly someone needs to get a grip on things and quickly.
Did anyone see the BBC report last night on the main news about illegal tobacco shops and drug dealers. they just keep shutting them down multiple times then they open up again all over the high streets. How is this being allowed to happen and why can't the police and authorities get a grip on this ? People are just sick of the decline in society, we are so far from what this country used to be like and no-one seems to be able to get a grip on things. thoroughly depressing.

Aus has resolved it, Poland has dented it via Belarus, Greece seems to be moving on it but not sure how long that will last. If you have a look you can see what each are doing.

I am really worried. I think they’ll wreck the economy Labour are doing that anyway

I don’t want our pensions to tank Pensions will tank anyway, and pension age will go up

I worry about more racism we already have racism and this will get worse unless uncontrolled immigration via little boats across the channel is dealt with

I wish Labour would do more to show that they are on the side of ordinary people I don't think they are on the side of ordinary people

Australia is very far from anywhere with rough seas. It's easy for them to say they will deport anyone arriving by boat!

Bumblebee72 · 01/08/2025 10:42

It's going to get worse under labour - they have already borrowed against future growth that isn't coming. It's like payday loan economics. They will have to double down on tax increases which will put off growth even more. We already have Project Fear trying to work against Farage again. It turned out to be wrong last time, it will be wrong again.

brunettemic · 01/08/2025 10:43

Being unable to sleep about an extremely unlikely hypothetical situation?

Bruisername · 01/08/2025 10:44

Their tax policy is shambolic because they made the commitment not to increase IT, CT or VAT when those levers can be used much more effectively

Bumblebee72 · 01/08/2025 10:45

The now ironically named "Labour" party are on the side of the workshy and feckless - with their handouts for all policies. Unfortunately that is becoming more and more normal for native brits.

No it’s not. There’s a fairly close crossing and yes there were thousands arriving before policy kicked in. I think you need to do some initial reading as what you’ve posted is too far off.

Basically what he's suggested is that abortion restrictions in the UK should be more similar to the rest of Europe, in light of medical advances..

Whether or not you would prefer that, it isn't crazy, and that headline is hyperbolic. There are left wing people on here all the time complaining about the UK and saying they are going to move to Europe where they think things are better, and they don't seem deeply concerned by the fact that their abortion limits are somewhat earlier.

Which says to me that most don't actually think it's an important differernce, they are just looking to paint a negative picture of Farage. (Which you wouldn't think would really be necessary as his work ethic is plenty questionable on its own.)

Denmark has become much stricter believe. Polices now more around deterrence and return. Much stricter on benefits availability and other measures.

Plus also the policies they have pursued have made a black hole turn into a super massive black hole 🕳
They were warned raising employers NI would hit SMEs and employment.........well guess what everyone else was right + Labour were wrong.
They are an utter shower of incompetence.

GasPanic · 01/08/2025 10:47

If you are worried about fringe parties like Reform and Corbyns gaining power in government, the best way to stop that is for mainstream parties like Labour and the Tories to actually do their job properly and make them irrelevant.

Yes I was shocked to find out that abortion is illegal in Germany and pre 12 week ones are only performed as a blind eye is turned. The current chancellor voted against changing it

It isn’t unlikely at all.

Labour should not have been so quick to scrap the offshore processing scheme in Rwanda. They need to be seen to be trying different things to deter the migrants.

At the moment, a huge part of the electorate are seeing their concerns repeatedly ignored and scorned; some feel that they are being actively silenced.

I don’t think Reform have all the answers, but I’m not surprised that people are looking outside the mainstream for politicians who will at least acknowledge we have serious problems.

The NI is a massive error in terms of finances but it’ll be this decision that backfires on Labour.

Yes it is. It’s the Lib Dem’s are going to win the election thing from 2008 or whenever it was all over again. People in this country vote for 2 parties and that’s highly unlikely to change. Maybe I’m wrong, if so come back to me after the next election.

Yes they scrapped Rwanda so gleefully and what have they replaced it with? Some poxy “one in one out” agreement with the French that nobody understands and that doesn’t even have a start date.
