Those who don't decorate but wear designer

AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

My house needs a few bits doing but it's incredibly expensive and often doing one thing means you have to do another...so for example, we need new stair carpet, but it's not worth doing unless we do the skirting boards too...if we do the skirting boards we should probably do the door frames too and then get new doors...so it all adds up and then you end up thinking may as well remortgage and just renovate whole bloody place at once! And we need a new bathroom downstairs but it also needs a new window...and there's no point getting one tiny window done, may as well do them all. It's a lot.

Clothes in comparison and other consumer goods like make up and bags etc are relatively inexpensive in comparison. They also don't cause huge disruption and having to engage unreliable tradesmen .

Octavia64 · 31/07/2025 18:56

Designer clothes are an order of magnitude cheaper than decorating a room.

also, have you not heard that the upper classes sneer at people who have to buy their furniture (instead of inheriting it)?

the real thing is to have a falling down stately home you can’t afford to fix, plus a battered Land Rover and several dogs.

Piffle11 · 31/07/2025 18:56

I know where you’re coming from OP, but ultimately it’s down to the individual. We all have different priorities.

i’ve watched vlogs on YouTube where people are spending tens of thousands of pounds on handbags, but live with dated/damaged furniture. One in particular I remember had a very small overgrown and tatty garden, but had just shelled out near £20,000 on designer goods. I’d have got the garden done/replaced the wardrobe/brought a new carpet, etc, but I guess it’s about what brings YOU joy.

WaterWolf · 31/07/2025 18:57

In my experience those who worry about other people’s class tend to have aspirations that reality doesn’t fulfil!

nadine90 · 31/07/2025 18:57

I’m a bit perplexed. You seem to be sneering at those who buy into the capitalist ideas of following fashion trends whilst fully embracing the capitalist ideas of doing each room in your house up with “carefully curated” furniture and decor. They are two sides of the same coin. My parents generation decorated and bought things for the home and to wear as and when they were needed (I.e. when they broke beyond repair and not before). Those who like to throw money into their home image are no better or worse than those who throw money into their wardrobe or those who throw it into cars/electronics/collectibles. They just like different things. And I say that as someone who loves interior design stuff (although finances do not allow me to buy all the things I’d love for my home)

What a heap of shit thread OP.

This reminds me of a house near us that was absolutely falling apart, but the owners had a Hummer parked outside. It was almost as big as the house. I'm not sure how you'd classify him in terms of class...

Bonkers thread of the day right here.

Does my woodchip wallpaper count OP?
It is painted magnolia!

And the swirly anaglypta ceiling, like wot I 'ave but can't afford to change.😀

Cheeseplantandcrackers · 31/07/2025 19:00

Isn’t it great that everyone has different priorities and enjoy different things! People are fascinating.

booknerdhead · 31/07/2025 19:01

‘Curated’😁 (Lydia Millen…)

OonaStubbs · 31/07/2025 19:01

More people see your designer clothes than see your decorated house.

fowyvyot · 31/07/2025 19:01

Who on earth are you talking about?
I don't anyone living in a shithole who is going around wearing designer clothes and having lots of beauty treatments.
Are these relatives or neighbours or friends or what?

namechangeGOT · 31/07/2025 19:02

Can you show us your artwork and decorations OP so we can decide if it’s shit and you’ve got your art & decorative priorities wrong?

SomeOfTheTrouble · 31/07/2025 19:02

I have no idea how to curate furniture 😭, and now I’m worried it means that I’m lower class.

Bingbopboomboomboombopbaam · 31/07/2025 19:02

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:43

So you're saying I'm from a lower class because I think it's important to maintain your home rather than wear flashy clothes?

I have no idea what “class” you’re “from” but frankly the way you’re so invested in judging other people’s houses sounds classless all around.

It’s none of your business what they do with their homes and it’s for them to enjoy, not you.

Additionally you don’t know why their houses are the way they are. For example, I was recommended to avoid all unnecessary furnishings due to DDs severe allergies - this included avoiding rugs and curtains. I love interior design but you’d get the completely wrong impression because you lack the context.

Maybe mind your own business and enjoy your priorities.

ClaredeBear · 31/07/2025 19:03

Not sure about designer (don’t care about that) but I suppose it might seem incongruous that someone might look after their personal appearance but not their environment.

MurdoMunro · 31/07/2025 19:04

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:59

What's your house like then?

Funnily enough we put Marcel Broodthaers’ ‘heap of shit’ installation in the centre of our mood board when we bought the chateau

HMSBeagle · 31/07/2025 19:04

Oh I have extended our house out to five beds. But there's the last owners wallpaper still up in the original part. Not sure about my priority choice? The new ultility has proper solid marble worktop - but it was a offcut. So I think overall dispite the five bed detached with marble worktops, were a bit low class trashy?

I look and think about the wall paper most months but need to do the drive next

Painting walls and buying decorative items

If 'decorative items' means 'nick nacks' then I'd rather have a designer dress and my lashes tinted.

MrBallenIsaFittie · 31/07/2025 19:05

What a weird post! My home is decorated (by the previous owner!) but could do with repainting, I've done the kitchen in vibrant mustard yellow and navy blue but not got round to the other rooms. I have ornaments and 'art' (Mass produced) and have never bought designer clothing in my life!!
Please pass your judgement OP.....I await the way to improve my life🙏😂

It means choosing furniture for the room. Is that something you need support with

I actually think it’s far more common to see the opposite - people who spend a lot of time and money making their houses look lovely, but make zero effort with themselves, and walk around looking a mess.
