AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

You can't see the correlation? To me it shows people who care about how they are perceived by others vs those who care about how they perceive and enjoy their home

I think your privilege is showing op.

It takes a lot more money and investment to own and decorate a house than it does to invest in self image. I speak as a poor working class chav in both areas.

Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re a better human being just because you benefit from inherited wealth or have a few bob.

For instance a new build kept with the plain white walls, no rugs no lamps no art

That’s painted, what if you like white walls? You said walls not painted, dont move the (white painted) goalposts . Quite a bit of the upstairs of our house is the original paint, Rowland homes special colour which is off white. I’ve rescinded your dinner invitation so as not to offend.

You’re showing your class there OP and not in the way that you think !

So you're saying I'm from a lower class because I think it's important to maintain your home rather than wear flashy clothes?

No that’s the best way you could spend it! What have you seen recently? I’m travelling down to London in a couple of months for the first time in years and going to get les mis tickets.

I am shortly going to see A Man for All Seasons with Martin Shaw.
Also saw "Chicago" and enjoyed it! But that's gone now.

Their priorities aren’t ‘wrong’ they’re just different to yours.

I live in a chateau with no roof and 8 chickens and wear Loro Piana tesoro

Painting walls and buying decorative items

When you say decorative items do you mean lots of stuff from somewhere like the Range or do you mean an Antique Fair? I don't feel the need to buy any more stuff for my house as it seems to be an ongoing battle to keep the clutter down!

So we’re allowed to spend money on holidays but not clothes? Got it!

Seriously OP - who do you think you are?

Well you have your priorities right then

I am more likely to raise an eyebrow when people are frequent redecorators of their homes, as it seems so wasteful. Going down to Dunelm every two years for a load of new curtains / rugs / lamps / artwork / candle holders etc., then a new sofa and chairs to boot. Not that there’s anything wrong with having these things, but why not get ones you like then keep them, rather than generate landfill? One of my aunts is a devil for this, and whilst I appreciate her handmedowns I am gobsmacked by the amount of time and energy she spends on her home.

I've seen Chicago three times - over about 20 years! Love it.

Should go to A Man for All Seasons but left London now and cba going in, though I think Martin Shaw will be grand. Probably sold out now.

Money well spent in anyone's opinion, surely.

My house has all sorts of decorating and work needing doing to it, it takes a lot of time and effort that I don’t really have, far more than just buying some beauty item (which wouldn’t be enough to pay for a decorator and/or supplies anyway) and people see my face/clothes far more than my house, my priorities aren’t wrong.

My house is the same. It needs about £50K worth of work and I just don’t have that money until I’m in a position to remortgage. In the meantime I prioritise wasting my money on lots of nice clothes, make up, perfume and my fancy car.
im sure the OP would seriously disapprove of me 🤣

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:48

@aCatCalledFawkes No. Nice furniture especially curated for the room or style of your choice

Oh good. Another goady thread inviting us all to judge poor people for spending money on the 'wrong' things.

Bore off.

AllTheChaos · 31/07/2025 18:48

What on earth does ‘curating’ furniture mean?!

Auroraloves · 31/07/2025 18:48

I find home decor quite expensive, but my house is functional, warm and comfortable so I don’t really care what outsiders think.

So the type doesnt matter or it does?

There are no rugs, lamps, art or nicknacks. If it has not got a purpose it doesn’t come in the house.

this is an active choice on decoration.

Bit Hyacinth Bucket really, innit.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 31/07/2025 18:49

Reasons I enjoy my house... it's spacious, surrounded by a gorgeous garden and woods, in a lovely small town, warm in winter and cool in summer, the kitchen functions very well, it has plenty of bathrooms, great showers, we never run out of hot water...

But alas, I put very little effort into painting walls and adding art and decorative items. The furniture does its job but none of it matches.

I am definitely lower class.

AllTheChaos · 31/07/2025 18:48

It think it's what pretentious wankers call "buying things".

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:50

@K0OLA1D no. As long as it is in a style you chose for the space
