AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

Funnily enough we put Marcel Broodthaers’ ‘heap of shit’ installation in the centre of our mood board when we bought the chateau

🤣🤣

Cattery · 31/07/2025 19:06

Didn’t it used to be called “fur coat and no knickers”?

MMUmum · 31/07/2025 19:06

You would love my house op. Several years ago we stripped the wallpaper, sanded the walls and painted them white, right throughout the house. Pictures on the walls were not re hung, nick nacks not replaced and we now have no window coverings of any sort downstairs as we are not overlooked. What a revelation it's been!! I feel like I can breathe freely now I'm not surrounded by 'stuff', you would never call my house decorated in your opinion but I love it. You do you and to each his own

It means choosing furniture for the room. Is that something you need support with

Why not just say that then? Surely even if people have what you deem to be shit furniture, they’ve still chosen it for that room? So… curated, no?

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 19:07

fowyvyot · 31/07/2025 19:01

Who on earth are you talking about?
I don't anyone living in a shithole who is going around wearing designer clothes and having lots of beauty treatments.
Are these relatives or neighbours or friends or what?

I do! Hence the question

This is totally bizarre

I have no idea how to curate furniture 😭, and now I’m worried it means that I’m lower class.

We don't know that OP can do any of this stuff, we only have their word for their decorative prowess!

FluffPiece · 31/07/2025 19:08

Hyacinth Bucket, is that you?

Well maybe it’s the company you keep.

My house is ordinary/simply furnished etc. We don’t decorate. Our curtains are over ten years old! We don’t buy anything unless it falls apart! I don’t care as DH and I prioritise other things like travelling and experiences. I think it’s very sad that value is placed on aesthetic.

lovepets · 31/07/2025 19:08

Have you any idea how people like you, OP, make people like me feel? We have a council house that is in need of so much ‘decor’, I don’t know where to start! We’re both disabled, have neither the means or ability to decorate, and it bothers me most days.
BUT, and it’s a big but, I’ve learnt in life that I can mix with people who have million pound houses and people who have worse houses than mine, ‘decor’ wise. I don’t judge either, because I know there are reasons behind why people’s houses are like they are. It’s not the houses that are important, it’s the people who are in them, and I’m not apologising if that makes me seem sanctimonious!
Why are you judging people’s houses? They’ve obviously been kind enough to invite you in, otherwise you wouldn’t have a clue what their decor is like!!
Maybe climb down from your ivory tower and show interest in the person whose house you’re in, rather than whether their walls have been painted!!
Oh, and I wear high street clothes and do my best to look as presentable as I can.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/07/2025 19:09

This is the oddest thread I've seen on here for quite a while.
Well done, OP.

You can't see the correlation? To me it shows people who care about how they are perceived by others vs those who care about how they perceive and enjoy their home

But other people 'perceive and enjoy' the person's home as well, surely? Unless these people are also Mn recluses who never answer the door and regard unexpected visitors as an act of war?

Some people are more invested in their own appearance, others are more invested in their house's appearance. Some have no particular interest in either, but garden obsessively. For some people 'home decoration' is a matter of displaying inherited objects or family portraits, for others it's a trip to Next.

Painting walls and buying decorative items

I need the laughing emoji 😆 for the idea that buying decorative items for your house should be priority over buying yourself something you'd like to wear.

@aCatCalledFawkes No. Nice furniture especially curated for the room or style of your choice

Curated 😂🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈

Because what you have postulated is senseless.

And you're being quite aggressive to some posters. I'm not sure why.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 31/07/2025 19:12

Yep YABU but you know that, OP.

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 19:12

@saltandvinegarchipsticks is that a new word for you?

Last time I had a visitor was more than a decade ago. And I rent so I'll continue to spend my disposable income how I like. Thanks for the concern though.

Tbh, I hate over decorated houses. Bloody trinkets everywhere! I haven’t got the time to clean that shite!

EmeraldRoulette · 31/07/2025 19:13

@OceanStorm I'm guessing you're wealthy

which I don't have a problem with

I just think it's the kind of theory a wealthy person would have

to curate everything properly in my flat would cost a lot and I'm guessing you wouldn't consider Ikea acceptable.

when you said about perception and reality, was it a question or a statement?

CatherinedeBourgh · 31/07/2025 19:13

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:38

You can't see the correlation? To me it shows people who care about how they are perceived by others vs those who care about how they perceive and enjoy their home

Some people don't enjoy their home as a function of how it is decorated?

I like to decorate. Which means my family is used to living in a permanent building site. They don't actually give much of a shit what the house looks like so long as it works, and they'd much rather not have walls half knocked down around, but I enjoy what I do so they put up with it.

I don't think I am better than them because I decorate. It's just a hobby, they have others.
