AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

I don’t wear designer and I can almost guarantee you wouldn’t consider my home ‘properly decorated’ and find this a very odd thread opener. Surely everyone has different priorities and can do as they please?

It's just my opinion. Mumsnet is full of opinions isn't it?

Who had you got in mind what you started this thread.
Or is it a random observation. Weird.

Medlar · 31/07/2025 18:35

It's a weird parallel. I don't think there's the slightest correlation between liking designer clothes and whether or not you decorate your home in some notional approved manner.

It's like saying 'What do we think of people who train as dentists but don't colour their hair?' Or 'What do we think of vegetarians who don't like Game of Thrones?'

LifesTooShortForBadSex · 31/07/2025 18:35

What constitutes proper decor? In your opinion op?

Can you give us some pointers?

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:36

Bananafofana · 31/07/2025 18:31

do you mean completely unpainted as in bare plasterboard or just not painted in a colour scheme? And now I’m wondering what a decorative item is. Things like rugs and lamps ?

For instance a new build kept with the plain white walls, no rugs no lamps no art

I don't do either. I spend all my.money on the West End..No doubt people think I am crazy.

EveryDayisFriday · 31/07/2025 18:37

Your judginess is irrelevant. People are free to spend their money as they wish.

What about those that choose to spend all their money on quality food or long haul holidays or prefer to save it all up in gold coins in a room Scrooge McDuck style. It really doesn't matter to anyone else.

Syuoo · 31/07/2025 18:37

My house has all sorts of decorating and work needing doing to it, it takes a lot of time and effort that I don’t really have, far more than just buying some beauty item (which wouldn’t be enough to pay for a decorator and/or supplies anyway) and people see my face/clothes far more than my house, my priorities aren’t wrong.

Holluschickie · 31/07/2025 18:37

I do have rugs, lamps and a bit of art. Nothing v expensive.

I do it the other way round - I hang designer clothes on my walls and wears outfits made of wallpaper.
Wallpaper is the new black.

FullOfMomsense · 31/07/2025 18:37

I get what you mean OP- I know some friends with the fancy car, clothes etc plenty of money and always look lovely, but their homes are outdated. I don't think it's a bad thing at all, it's just odd to me that they care a lot about looks and aesthetics but don't seem to see their home in the same way.

Obviously I don't think because you own a few designer items you must have a brand new kitchen, bathroom and crushed velvet furniture, but it's odd to drive a range rover you own outright, wear expensive clothes and have a very high income, but you sit on worn out sofas that came with the house, and your kitchen doors are hanging on for dear life.

Wingedharpy · 31/07/2025 18:37

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:32

No. It's seems your house may be neglected unless this was a recent decorative choice

Now you've really confused me.
So, if my woodchip is new, it's OK, but if it's old (vintage? antique?) and in perfectly good nick, it doesn't make the grade?
Whatever happened to saving the planet?

Have you been to Italy?? Clapped out cars and poorly maintained buildings everywhere but everyone looks beautiful 😂

the two things aren’t related in my mind but obviously people might have different priorities to you.

You can't see the correlation? To me it shows people who care about how they are perceived by others vs those who care about how they perceive and enjoy their home

No ART?? Heavens!

I bet your Dunelm van Gogh starry sky prints are to die 4 op

Waitingfordoggo · 31/07/2025 18:38

I don’t do either of these things. I must be a shambles of a human being 😂 (I mean I have painted my house and it has furniture in it but I wouldn’t say it’s stylish).

Aesthetics are not my thing. I don’t understand art either 😂
I like music, that is the art that I enjoy.

No that’s the best way you could spend it! What have you seen recently? I’m travelling down to London in a couple of months for the first time in years and going to get les mis tickets.

Oceann · 31/07/2025 18:39

You’re showing your class there OP and not in the way that you think !

It's Mumsnet which is a forum including many opinions- not Wikipedia

I dont think op's thinking is lateral as that

I think they're judging lower socio-economic demographics who spend money on turkey teeth or boob jobs or spray tans & (fake) dolce & gabanna etc whilst having broken electrical items & discarded sofas in the front gardens of their neglected council houses. You know....that sort of thing 🙄

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 31/07/2025 18:39

They just have different priorities.
Neither way is wrong.

EmeraldRoulette · 31/07/2025 18:39

This is a weird one

if I had money for this, I wouldn't see it as one or the other

if I had to pick one, I think better clothes would be more important to me than making my flat prettier

this is weird, it's like saying someone should prioritise going running over going swimming. No...just they choose what they want.

I enjoy to have a life outside my home. I’ve gained far more from amazing, long haul holidays (we’re just back from Australia for example) than I ever will from the most up to date toilet.
