AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

Curating an Argos sofa 😄
This is batshit

This isn’t what curating means and for someone who does “art” I would’ve presumed you would understand that @OceanStorm

We have a home, it’s not curated, but right now it’s full of happy teenagers (not all ours) and has been most of the day, they get me making plates of homemade food and snacks - with laughter and conversation - it must be passable because they all come here, all the time, they’ve tried other houses but it seems this one is their favourite - and when you have 7 active teen boys to feed you can’t afford to curate a house or wardrobe! And I’d rather put money into people than things.

It’s covered in art mind, I paint portraits as a job, that “curated” enough? And it’s counterproductive doing that in a Chanel suit sitting on a Chesterfield.

You sound like you are all smoke and mirrors OP.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/07/2025 20:50

............it must be passable because they all come here, all the time, they’ve tried other houses but it seems this one is their favourite

Ha! Our house was the favourite of all our teenage children's friends, many years ago.

CandyCane457 · 31/07/2025 20:39

Dammit she’s not curated! She was actually a…dare I say it…stray!!!

She’s a cat she thinks she’s curated your perception is irrelevant

Roastiesarethebestbit · 31/07/2025 20:52

I’m assuming that someone you deeply dislike lives this way. And you are trying to justify your dislike for this person by making a big deal about something that is actually really trivial and isn’t actually a thing that is usually used to judge people by.

I know people who rate function over style for their home, but enjoy dressing stylishly themselves. I also know those who feel the opposite. And I know those who couldn’t give much of a damn about home or personal style as long as they are clean and tidy. No correlation with ‘class’.

People make different choices about how they live their lives OP. Perhaps reflect on why people making different choices to you makes you feel uncomfortable.

Yes definitely. It's not about what you buy but the fact you chose to put effort into your home

So you wouldn't judge people that choose one or the other of them sofas because they curated it ?

I would love a Chesterfield from Fleming but FB market place is my wallet size .

Who said they should have a neutral pallete?? It could be pink and yellow but it's the effort that went into making a house a home

Op some people do not see their house as something to be styled. I don't. I like clothes and bags and shoes. I would never spend money on nick nacks for my home though. I find it twee and weird. Like the people that are obsesed with zoflora and air freshners. And freah cut flowers and ornaments. I just would never buy these things. My house is homely but I have no interest in styling it.
I do spend money on clothes and bags, not because I care what others think, I just like fashion. But not home fashion.

It’s fucking expensive @TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne 😀

They have been playing darts, various dice games and got the digital decks out.

They have had homemade burger buns, coleslaw, houmous, freshly squeezed juices and vanilla ice cream made with pods!

Actually I can see why it’s their favourite now!

Think it’s too late to roll back the teenage paradise curating they wouldn’t stand for it (there’s too many of them) 😀

@Mochudubh wait, I'm upper class now? That can't be right 😂

I inherited most of my furniture... My mum was in service for 13 yrs. My late FIL and late husband both worked at Abergeldie/Balmoral.

I reckon we're both upperclass, Emerald...

I'm in a quoty frame of mind this evening and reading your posts @OceanStorm this one came to mind;

Conservative politician Alan Clark writes in his diary about his detested “arriviste” colleague Michael Heseltine, quoting fellow MP Michael Jopling:

“The trouble with Michael is that he has had to buy all his own furniture.”

Penfoldfive · 31/07/2025 20:23

I'm middle class - Russell group uni, favourite food avocado, kids have piano lessons.

But we have several undecorated rooms - completely bare plaster - we have a big house, busy jobs and haven't got round to it.

I think I have at least one designer handbag, so maybe I've got my priorities wrong. 🤔

I went to a Russell group uni in the days before the Russell group existed. I had piano accordion lessons and Dad was a coalminer.

My late DH went hunting with the Queen. (Okay...He was a ghillie.)

No idea what I am at all.

An interior mooning garden gnome, for instance. Or china ducks flying diagonally across your wall. Or a standard lamp shaped like a leg in a stiletto and fishnets.

Oi! I love my ducks. They are an actual heirloom inherited from DP's granny. Original 1930's and worth about £500. Don't disrespect the ducks.

Painting walls and buying decorative items

I think the difference is designer clothes are a practical item (everyone needs clothes)
Decorative items serve no point.
So it's very easy to argue those who prioritise decorative items have their priorities wrong

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 19:14

How are you assessing whether someone put effort in or not?

FloofyBird · 31/07/2025 21:08

Decorative items just mean more shit to clean.

I'm pretty sure they advise not to decorate new builds for a year or so due to potential settlement?

Different priorities, different things that bring them joy. So what?

Jennps · 31/07/2025 21:18

Look at all the faux naivety on this thread.

oh but what a properly decorated house.

But whatever do you mean by designer gear and not decorating your house.

Surely a nicely painted wall is not more important than cheap and tacky brands or talon nails.

People know exactly what you mean OP. People who live in houses which look neglected, sometimes even dirty but will be wearing cheap looking false eyelashes, hair extensions and brands to show off.

HappyNewTaxYear · 31/07/2025 21:19

WigglesMadness · 31/07/2025 20:03

Low blow for the OP who is one of those people who have to buy their own furniture!

Poor old Michael Heseltine eh

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/07/2025 21:25

No voting? Yes you are unreasonable in not understanding that others may have different priorities to you. I can’t say that I wear ‘designer clothes’ but I am aware of what I look like when I step outside of my house,
dress in a way that I enjoy and get my hair done regularly. I spend quite a lot on holidays and other social things. There are rooms in my house which have had very little updating since I got married 30 years ago. I’m quite happy with the way I live my life.

Nope, don’t know anyone like that.

DeedlessIndeed · 31/07/2025 21:34

I've spent some time in Asia, and there is a cultural difference, although it's really a massive generalisation. Maybe OP is referring to, or, elaborating on that and applying it to socioeconomic class in the UK?

The saying goes something along the lines of British people live in their wealth, whereas in parts of Asia it is more common to wear (or nowadays even drive) your wealth.

This is most common in cultures where "face" is a concept. It has something to do with projecting an image of prosperity. Whereas the "old money" vs "new money" trope still persists in the UK.

I think it is a pretty dated concept, as there is just too much variance on both sides.

fat honey boo boo GIF

I have magnolia walls/basic wallpaper on half my walls, and wear Tesco F & F, and Asda George clothes. Some of the ornaments in my house, I bought from B & M. Got my living room lamps from there too.

What does that make me? 😂

LBFseBrom · 31/07/2025 22:18

I don't know about designer clothes and beauty treatments but I was certainly always more interested in dressing well and looking nice than doing my home up. Home just had to be warm, comfortable and relaxed, I didn't care about it more than that. I also enjoyed eating out and going to concerts and would prioritise that over a tin of paint.

Maybe the OP is in fact Burglar Bill.

I spend my money on the dog, which also why it’s not worth decorating.

Also, I don’t really understand cushions.

painting dog https://share.google/niB12cPRRoi1AzKNg

I recon if this dog can paint tulips you could get yours to paint the walls ( you may have to hold the ladder for him /her) 😄 🐕 🎨

Do your cushions not speak the same language as you? 🤣
