Those who don't decorate but wear designer

AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

I spend all my mine on travel.

Same. I'd rather save up for a holiday than paint for the house when the white paint on my walls are perfectly fine.

skippy67 · 31/07/2025 20:00

YABU. And ridiculous.

SpongeKnobNoPants · 31/07/2025 20:01

Why is renting a council flat a drain on society?

booknerdhead · 31/07/2025 20:02

We buy a house not a home clever clogs.

Ally886 · 31/07/2025 20:02

If you would like to talk class, I have spent time with plenty of titled peers with incredibly undecorated houses. Dukes, Marquess's, Lords. Never have I thought they had decorated nicely and I'm sure you'd think the same

DeanStockwelll · 31/07/2025 20:03

Wingedharpy · 31/07/2025 18:37

Now you've really confused me.
So, if my woodchip is new, it's OK, but if it's old (vintage? antique?) and in perfectly good nick, it doesn't make the grade?
Whatever happened to saving the planet?

You do know that if your wood chip is more than 3 days old it's classed as dated and must be removed and replaced with brand new wood chip don't you , tsk tsk tsk how very unkempt your home must look ! 🤣🤣🤣.

@OceanStorm we make our own art finger painting? Photo jigsaws? Sandscapes ? Water colour ? Oils ? Life size marble statues ?

The wallpaper in my home is about 20 years old and gets repainted every couple of years so where does that put me on your very odd scale ?

NetZeroZealot · 31/07/2025 19:58

My house is 500 years old and mostly furnished with inherited antiques. We did paint some of the walls when we moved in 20 years ago.

Is that properly decorated OP?

Mind you I don't buy designer clothes either - I am happier in M&S jeans most of the time.

Low blow for the OP who is one of those people who have to buy their own furniture!

Do you know what makes my house a home?

Sitting in it, laughing and chatting with my boyfriend, sharing stories of our day and having cuddles.
As well as getting home from a day at work and my little black cat comes to greet me and sits on my knee for tickle time.
Having the comfort and joy of coming home to a little family that loves me, feeling safe here, is what makes my house a home.

But is the cat curated? Only then can it truly be a home 🤣

ZenGarden89 · 31/07/2025 20:04

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 18:36

For instance a new build kept with the plain white walls, no rugs no lamps no art

What kind of art do you ‘decorate’ with OP? Genuinely curious.

Has the boyfriend been curated? Is he a highly educated home owner? Does he drive a Mercedes?

Does he play golf and vote Conservative?

Maybe she’s into diamond painting? Something like this?

My pets go with the decor so if I repaint the walls then the dog will also get the once over.

HappyNewTaxYear · 31/07/2025 20:06

Tell us about your house OP. Has every room been decorated recently? How often do you redecorate? What colours and themes do you like?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/07/2025 20:06

WigglesMadness · 31/07/2025 20:03

Low blow for the OP who is one of those people who have to buy their own furniture!

She also had to buy her own house instead of simply inheriting a stately home from her ancient family.

NetZeroZealot · 31/07/2025 20:06

I would like to know how the OP is defining 'art' too.

And 'highly educated'.

Do you have original paintings on the walls or just prints? Family portraits or photos?

Do you have a Masters' Degree or a PhD?

DeanStockwelll · 31/07/2025 20:06

Fragmentedbrain · 31/07/2025 18:43

Potato prints?

Oh lord we need the laughing emoji back ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

DeeLasVegas · 31/07/2025 20:07

Who said it’s a ‘free house’? You do realise that working people also live in council houses & pay their own rent?

Paaseitjes · 31/07/2025 20:07

So in my opinion, rugs are disgusting dirt traps to hide crap flooring, white walls are optimal for showing off art and lamps are weird and means you couldn't be bothered to properly optimise your fixed lighting, presumably due to lack of skill and taste. But I respect your choice to decorate your house in such a horrible way, so how about you try to respect other people

PonyPatter44 · 31/07/2025 20:08

Curated art as well as curated furniture, no doubt. Bet you've had to buy your own furniture as well.

DeeLasVegas · 31/07/2025 20:09

Yes it’s definitely lower class to worry about how other people decorate their house or what clothes they wear.

I moved into this place in '87, if I recall correctly. The wood chip has been repainted, but I can't remember the last time I did it.

The whole point of wood chip, according to my Aunty Mary (circa 1967) was that you would never need to paper again. nods solemnly

MadameTwoSwords · 31/07/2025 20:09

I think both overly polished homes and designer clothes are tacky. Screams try-hard at best.

Dweetfidilove · 31/07/2025 20:10

SomeOfTheTrouble · 31/07/2025 19:57

OP is upper class because she has art on her walls, but dresses in rags. Some people she knows are lower class because they have white walls and non curated furniture but wear designer clothes. Think that’s how it works.

Ahhhh! The usual performative crap then.
It must be so tiring looking for cues to the social standing of others 🥱.

Please explain what you mean here @OceanStorm ? Would you say that to someone's face or just from behind a keyboard?

OffRoad · 31/07/2025 20:11

I have zero interest in home decor. I love fashion.
