Those who don't decorate but wear designer

AIBU to think those who choose to not properly decorate their homes but wear designer clothes/beauty treatments have their priorities wrong? Is it a class thing?

I'd rather have a well decorated house, but I have a lovely house and a rather crap looking body (though healthy, for which I'm grateful). If I had a crap house and a fabulous body, I might well switch priorities.

I would like to know how the OP is defining 'art' too.

And 'highly educated'.

Do you have original paintings on the walls or just prints? Family portraits or photos?

Do you have a Masters' Degree or a PhD?

I am also curious about this/these.

Flomingho · 31/07/2025 20:12

I think it is a case of personal preference. Some very well groomed people I know live in run down scruffy houses and equally some unkempt people have immaculate houses. Don't think it has anything to do with their class.

@K0OLA1D no. As long as it is in a style you chose for the space

That's very magnanimous of you !

@Kirbert2 people who have bought homes have to decorate and most are paying a lot more then council rent

I have two friends "who bought their home" they both dress very well, professional jobs, nice cars, nice handbags, their homes have no personal touch, both filthy, they couldn't care less, once they've a bed to sleep in, 8 week old bedsheets, sofa with holes in it, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. They don't prioritise keeping a nice home.

Reasons I enjoy my house... it's spacious, surrounded by a gorgeous garden and woods, in a lovely small town, warm in winter and cool in summer, the kitchen functions very well, it has plenty of bathrooms, great showers, we never run out of hot water...

But alas, I put very little effort into painting walls and adding art and decorative items. The furniture does its job but none of it matches.

I am definitely lower class.

No, comfortable mis-matched furniture makes you very much upper-class, "U" if you like.

OP on the other hand is firmly lower middle-class.

(As a member of the servant class, you can trust me on these things).

Jeschara · 31/07/2025 20:19

This is a wind up. People are individuals and can do as they please. Why does it concern you so much?
Are you jealous because some people look better than you.

gamerchick · 31/07/2025 18:54

Really want to see photos of the OPs house now Grin

No no no , this is what they are angling for so they can show off their new live love life crushed grey velvet cushion .

EmeraldRoulette · 31/07/2025 20:19

@Mochudubh wait, I'm upper class now? That can't be right 😂

Thepossibility · 31/07/2025 20:20

My house is very nice as that is my choice, but surely it is the same superficial ego that chooses nice decoration for the home as choosing nice decoration for the body? One is not deeper than the other.

That really is unpleasant. And inaccurate.

I've lived in my house 11 years, for 11 years my living room has needed to be decorated.... We have amazing holidays though 🤣

Nailed it

I don't do much on the way of decorating and I bloody hate ornaments: my house is full of unfinished efforts. I don’t wear designer either though but I do waste my money on revealing about the country regularly. It’s more fun.

Mochudubh · 31/07/2025 20:22

@EmeraldRoulette More so, if covered with a generous layer of pet hair.

I have bought an almost complete range of Farrow & Ball tester pots, and with a small spray gun for plastic models (which I bought from eBay) I have diluted these and sprayed all my clothes with colours which compliment my home.

Earlier today I was wearing a camisole top in Mauretanian Lifebelt with leggings in Corbyn's Beard (not literally!!!!) This evening I shall slip into Alaskan Glacier jim-jams with my favorite Hawaiin Lava foot warmer.

(One can see that we don't do Dulux, or that sort of thing, in this house!)

😂

Penfoldfive · 31/07/2025 20:23

I'm middle class - Russell group uni, favourite food avocado, kids have piano lessons.

But we have several undecorated rooms - completely bare plaster - we have a big house, busy jobs and haven't got round to it.

I think I have at least one designer handbag, so maybe I've got my priorities wrong. 🤔

22O725 · 31/07/2025 20:24

@OceanStormhow free?

ThatLoudBear · 31/07/2025 20:27

I've got worn decor and second hand furniture in my much loved HA flat AND I wear second hand clothes, so I'm just just a underclass skank through and through, I'm guessing?!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/07/2025 20:27

DeeLasVegas · 31/07/2025 20:09

Yes it’s definitely lower class to worry about how other people decorate their house or what clothes they wear.

And it's extremely bad manners to be so horrible about people who live in council houses.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 31/07/2025 20:29

OceanStorm · 31/07/2025 19:17

Not wealthy. And it's not about the choice of furniture whether from ikea or second hand but the fact you have chosen a specific piece that you like that suits the home. Rather than having worn out furniture dirty walls etc whilst maintaining your outside appearance

Different priorities. What makes a house a home to me is books. So I have a lot of books. I don't wear designer clothes - I largely clothes shop in charity shops.

Pretty much every room needs needs re-papering and re-carpeting, but firstly we can't afford it and secondly DS is autistic and couldn't cope with the disruption. Getting the living room radiator changed was incredibly stressful because DS was so upset about it. Do I like having a patch of bare plaster where there was an issue with damp? No. But I can't cope with having to empty the room and manage DS's distress and find the money to fix it. I'd quite like to restore the parquet flooring downstairs, but DS considers wooden floors extremely dangerous and quotes accident stats at me...

Confabulations · 31/07/2025 20:30

Nobody 'curates' their house. It's not a bloody museum or zoo collection.

SUPerSaver721 · 31/07/2025 20:30

Do you work in a job that brings you into loads of houses? I only really go into family and friends houses. Maybe I see into someone's house if I'm walking past and the lights are on but I only see a small bit say hallway or sitting room. I wouldn't know if the random joe blogs wearing a designer jumper has a nicely decorated house. And whose to say your idea of nicely presented house is actually nice? Maybe you have a house full of silver velvor and live, laugh, learn and mirror furniture. Which I think is disgusting.

TowerRavenSeven · 31/07/2025 20:30

I met someone like this once, she was very put together with nice outfits, accessories, etc. I must admit I was surprised when I visited her house and it was a new(er) build but no paint or decoration. Money was not the issue though, she was wealthy but newly divorced and was just waiting until her kids were 18 so she could pull up stakes and move to a different (more expensive) state where her family was from. She had quite a few more years to go, so although I was a bit surprised, in the long run it made sense.

Could it be that its almost impossible to pull off both?
