@Extravirginolive Maybe I haven’t explained myself very well.
Historically the English have been white, from the point that England became a defined place. Over the years we have been invaded by Germans, French, Scandinavians etc. Yet I’m sure that the descendants of those invaders are now well established as part of the English population.
How do I define English? Cultural. There are a set of societal norms that each culture develops, a sort of code of etiquette to flag up dangerous foreign infiltrators who might threaten us. (I’m being tongue in cheek, in case anyone is wondering).
Have you read Watching The English? It was written by an anthropologist and a it’s a great study into the minutiae of displays of Englishness.
Now we have had lots of non-white immigration since the 1950s, the descendants of those immigrants are probably grandparents themselves. They may well have mixed race descendants. Three generations later are they not English? If they follow the same social cues as described in Watching The English and describe themselves as English as opposed to African-English or whatever, then yes, I honestly believe they are English.
Black skin colour seems to be the dominant gene in mixed race offspring, so it seems reasonable that the skin colour of the English will change as races mix more freely. However, long term that may revert back to whiteness. And as the ancestors would have been white English, if the descendants consider themselves to be part of an unbroken line of Englishness, then I really can’t see a problem with it.
However, if we say that English culture is racist etc etc then we are likely to end up with a predominant culture far, far removed from the one we have presently. I don’t think that’s a good thing. And I think the best way to avoid that is to stop calling anyone who is worried or disconcerted by the pace of demographic change a racist.
We need to look at what their fears are. Is it just skin colour or is it cultural - a lessening or change in the freedoms and accepted cultural practices we have historically enjoyed here? We can’t accommodate unlimited different cultures and expect everything to remain harmonious. We can accept different skin colours though. And we need a common language too, otherwise we will fragment.
