I've always been 5 foot 6. Today I was measured at a medical centre and they told me I was 5 foot 4. The last time I was measured was 5 years ago and I was still 5 foot 6. I am going to double check my height

How old are you? Have you shrunk?

FullOfMomsense · 30/07/2025 20:39

Drink lots of water and get someone to measure you in the morning

You could have been stooping
They could be wrong
You could have shrunk
you could have been wrong in the first place.

it’s probably a mixture of the first three.

Normal over time. The squish discs between your vertebrae gradually degenerate and lose their youthful plumpness. Also bony degeneration like osteoporosis or osteopoenia may have kicked in. I would go to GP and ask for a bone density scan.

Francestein · 31/07/2025 03:55

*Squishy

I had a bone density scan earlier as I've got osterperosis. I actually know a woman age 74 who is 5 foot 11 who claims she gas not shrunk. I do not believe you can reach that age and not shrink. If she's 5 foot 11 at 74 she must have been 6 foot as a young woman. I actually work with a woman who is 6 foot 2

I've always been envious of females taller than me. I've always wanted to be about 5 ft 8, and the good thing is as a woman I cab wear heels. I am sure I'm not 5 ft 4 because I know a woman who says she's 5 foot 6 and we are the same height

Most women shrink slightly, but it can be as little as up to an inch. So your 5' 11" woman might not have shrunk within a noticeable amount. You have a condition which causes shrinking. It sounds as though your GP is doing what's recommended.

solando · 31/07/2025 04:52

I'm 67 and still 5'10", I wouldn't mind shrinking a bit, unfortunately it is only your back that seems to shrink, my arms would still stay very long so I would probably have even more problem buying long sleeved clothes.

Why water?

If you're dehydrated your muscles and gels in the body (discs) can shrink slightly, making you shorter

No I wouldn’t recommend advising people to get a bone density scan just for that! Resources are massively overstretched already for those in actual medical need. My GP referred me a few months ago because my metatarsal snapped out of the blue one day but I was rejected as it wasn’t a significant enough break in their eyes to warrant investigation so they’ll hardly accept someone concerned about their perceived diminishing height.

Tallerandtall · 31/07/2025 06:35

@PerkyOchrePeer

i wish I was 5ft 4. It's not easy being over 6ft!
thank goodness for long tall sally.

Francestein · 31/07/2025 06:36

Two inches of height is potentially significant and worth discussing bone density with GP.

WhereAreWeNow · 31/07/2025 06:39

Same thing happened to me recently. I've always been 5"8. Nurse measured me as 5"7. I'm 50 and a bit worried because of family history that I might have osteoporosis. I'm going to ask GP about a bone density scan at some point.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/07/2025 06:43

How old are you?
How much weight bearing exercise do you do?

I'm not shrinking... it's just the teenagers having growth spurts... Grin

lljkk · 31/07/2025 07:09

I'm late 50s & definitlely shrunk too (!!). Although more like 0.25-0.5 inches.
I would suspect measurement in doctor's office was too quick or you were slouching maybe.

Yes I was slouching because I Ve got a bad back. If they were doing their job properly they would have seen I was slouching and told british stand more upright. I reched it again at home this morning.Standing bolt uprght using a tape measure And it said I was 5 foot 5 and a 1/2 So I'm going to phone my GP surgery and have that recorded and double checked at the doctor's office. I'm not going to take what happened yesterday. As the reading

5 ft 7 is still tall.. my dad didn't have osteoporosis but he shrank from 6 foot 3 to 5 foot 11. He had back issues and his back was bent so he didn't walk upright. Not sure why he became bent. He never had it investigated he was one of these people who just accepted things without finding the cause.

Not sure why this matters to be honest?? You are the height you are.....Depending on the tape measure I can be anything from 5'0 to 5'3

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/07/2025 08:43

I've always been just over 5ft 11 and last appt I was 5ft 10,it's my age!

PerkyOchrePeer · 31/07/2025 08:51

I've always admired tall women. I would be absolutely devastated if I was short
