My friend just got back from abroad and brought us some biscuits. They were super tasty and really buttery. DP ended up eating most of them.

When I wanted to bin the packet, I noticed they had lard in them. DP doesn’t eat pork for religious reasons. He’s not super religious otherwise, but that’s the one thing he sticks to.

Now I don’t know whether to tell him. I feel bad keeping it from him, but he’s already eaten them, and I’m worried he might get upset or blame my friend. She definitely didn’t mean any harm. She’s not the type to check ingredients, and honestly, we didn’t expect biscuits to have lard either.

YABU - tell him
YANBU - don’t tell him

We don’t eat that either we’re also not that religious but it’s still because of that. Anyway don’t tell him, we’ve had a couple of accidents having it and I wouldn’t want to know, it’ll just make him feel sick.

@allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld , Did you miss the DP doesn’t eat pork for religious reasons. in the OP ? Your post is offensive.

3 years ago I gave my SIL gravy at Xmas.

Completely forgetting I had added the juices from the meat. I didn't realise until the next day.

I told DH and he just shrugged. So I never told her.

Again
thoroughly daft of her not to enquire given you served the same gravy as to all the meat eaters

BakingMuffins · 30/07/2025 20:44

He would be a twat if he was upset at other people over his own choice. If he’s that bothered he should check himself.

Bleachedlevis · 30/07/2025 23:18

NRTFT yet but what would you hope to achieve by telling him? What would be the point? And if your DP is so fussy, why didn’t HE read the label?

CarCrashLifes · 30/07/2025 23:29

If he was that bothered about not eating certain things then he’d read the label himself surely?!

Lard can be from beef as well as pork. Do the ingredients differentiate between them?

I just Googled this and lard is definitely made from pork fat. Beef doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere!

Got to be the most bizarre response on the thread!

I am almost certain this is a young white woman with a Muslim boyfriend who is making a mountain out of a molehill for attention.
Either that or she is trying to start some kind of problem between her friend and her boyfriend. This post is too over the top to be straightforward.

I would assume beef lard TBH so I think you'll be OK.

But don't tell him anyway!

I'm pretty sure lard is exclusively pork fat. Beef fat is generally called tallow.

Oh dear... thanks for educating me! Picked up a misconception from somewhere.

Sorry, but beef lard doesn't exist. Lard is from pigs, tallow (and dripping) is from cows.

caramac04 · 31/07/2025 10:52

@RampantIvy you are right re lard and tallow (I was wrong) but you can absolutely have both pork and beef dripping, also lamb.
All dripping is the the meat juices and fats left to cool in a basin where they separate. I’ve enjoyed many slices of toast with pork dripping and salt. Not for many years sadly as it’s not that healthy. I still ‘make’ it and use the fat for roasting potatoes and put the ‘jelly’ bit in the gravy.

JMSA · 31/07/2025 10:53

Don’t tell him. What would be gained from it? And it’s 100% not your friend’s fault anyway.

caringcarer · 31/07/2025 10:59

It might be beef lard so i'd say nothing either to your DH or your friend.

GloriaMonday · 31/07/2025 11:12

@caringcarer , lard is never from beef, it is pig fat.

No, it won't.

He could have read the label. He chose not to.

I am veggie, (definitely not a fanatic, and have never, ever tried to 'convert' anyone, or push my own views on to anyone else) but I do read the labels when shopping and am amazed to find that many basic foodstuffs do in fact have 'meaty' ingredients - (eg plain noodles 'may contain chicken stock' etc) - however, nothing to gain with telling him about the lard, (and I do know that when, for example, we are eating out, a 'veggie' meal isn't guaranteed to be totally 'veggie' - unless maybe in a vegan restaurant - it may just not contain actual 'meat'.). I would just let this go. (I only found out recently that simple Worcestershire sauce isn't actually vegetarian.....maybe mention something like this in general conversation to 'enable' him to make his own choices & remember to read the labels??)
