To think the RNLI are 100% in the right

I've just seen this story on the BBC news homepage where the RNLI are being accused of acting as a taxi service for migrants trying to enter the UK on small boats from Europe.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dejyg4l37o

The organisation and volunteers quite rightly have responded to say they make no apologies for saving lives at sea and that their work has no political motivation.

Damn straight - one of the volunteers further down the article explains the profound impact he feels of encountering people struggling in our waters.

It makes me wonder what critics of the service expect them to do - just sail away, leaving the people to die? Pick them up and cross the channel to dump them back 'where they came from'?

What is wrong with them? Where is their compassion? Regardless of your thoughts on immigration, this is so cold and inhuman....

Of course they’re right, sadly a small subset of deeply unpleasant people only see white people as human beings.

FurryHappyKittens · 29/07/2025 09:47

I like when stories like this hit the news. It means the RNLI get an influx of donations.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/07/2025 09:49

That’s exactly what they want them to do. It’s appalling. And even more appalling that people feel that we live in a world where it’s acceptable to say that.

Whiningatwine · 29/07/2025 09:49

The only issue I have with the RNLI doing this is that they are run without government funding and on donations from the public. I know they prefer this, but I do think when it comes to migrant crossings the government should pay the expenses of the rescue. I'm convinced that these migrants crossings are due to government failures in setting out a proper process and I don't think a charity should be funding sorting the mess out.

LavenderBlue19 · 29/07/2025 09:51

Of course they are. No decent human could think any differently.

I donated this morning, I'm sure lots of others did too.

Disturbia81 · 29/07/2025 09:52

Yes, humanity first always. The day this country leaves people to knowingly die would be a dark day.

You only have to read comments on articles to see how some people think.. news reports about someone dying, and I mean someone of any colour and nationality, not a criminal, and there’s people saying they deserved it or joking about it. Makes me sick

needtostopnamechanging · 29/07/2025 09:54

Yikes I think I voted the wrong way - sorry!

of course YANBU and i would be interested to see how people
complaining would really respond in that situation

TheNightingalesStarling · 29/07/2025 09:54

They don't have time to check nationality or passports or visas Their job is just saving lives.

(My grandfather was a lifeboatman. They frequently rescued smugglers. Indeed one of his colleagues on the boat was known smuggler... my grandfather being the Island customs officer. That was all left on shore )

Pootles34 · 29/07/2025 09:54

He begrudges them saving the life of a four year old child? What an odious little man. I hope he keeps talking so people see him for what he is.

Perhaps he thinks they should rebrand 'Saving White Lives at Sea'.

Brendahollowayreconsider · 29/07/2025 09:55

Obviously it would be inhumane to leave people to drown.
I'm sure Priti Patel suggested something very similar a few years ago to leave immigrants in trouble at sea to it.
Excuse the spelling of her name if I haven't got it right.

You can change your vote - just click on the 'correct' one and it should change.

ReservationDogs · 29/07/2025 09:56

Totally agree!

What should they do, look at them, check their skin colour, get their passports first? then leave them to drown....?

Arseholes who think they are doing wrong - they can just fuck off

Edited

You want them to abandon the law of the sea in favour of a chargeable service? What's next, a performance target for more government funded rescues because the public have decided it's now funded by them instead of a charity?

Givemestrengthanddetermination · 29/07/2025 09:58

We live in a sick warped society where a humanitarian organisation like the RNLI is demonised for saving lives and a drug addicted, obnoxious man who boasted about his cruelty to animals is being lauded as some sort of dead hero.

I don't understand how we've sunk to the level we have.

Some people are just trash. Disgusting.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/07/2025 10:02

I haven’t read the story, thank god, but what sort of world are we currently living in? Seriously, I despair. If there actually is anyone out there reading this who thinks these people should be allowed to drown, you should be ashamed.

YANBU.

I don't support the illegal immigrants and think they should be processed and returned faster, but we are a humane decent society and a seafaring nation. We do not stand by while people drown.

Internaut · 29/07/2025 10:07

Wasn't there someone who raised funds for an entire lifeboat off the back of one of Farage's previous attempts to demonise the RNLI? I believe he planned to call it The Flying Farage, which would be absolutely brilliant.

Of course they’re right, sadly a small subset of deeply unpleasant people only see white people as human beings.

Yes of course they are right, you would have to be sub human to think any other way.

But I’m not sure I agree with your second point. I imagine they only think a very narrow range of white people are human. I doubt, for example, they would include gay people, disabled people, homeless people…well, you get the picture…

MandyMotherOfBrian · 29/07/2025 10:10

…and yes to the donations, I shall do so now…

Once again: they are not illegal immigrants until their application for asylum has been processed and rejected. It is not illegal to arrive by small boat.

BIWI · 29/07/2025 10:18

So who are the 13 or so people who think YABU? And why haven’t they had the courage of their convictions to argue their point?
