To say MIL not sleeping on new sofa when it arrives?

We have 2 bed home with a young toddler (crib her room, no spare bed) so space is tight. When MIL comes to visit (5 hours away) she normally sleeps on sofa with bedding with her dog. It’s a big comfy sofa and she has always stated she prefers that over the blow up bed option we also offer. For the first time in almost a decade we have a new sofa arriving Saturday. It’s a light colour and quite expensive. I said to DH today when MIL comes to visit I think its best we look at some sort of pop up style bed I can set up in living room for her with bedding instead of sleeping on new sofa. Particularly as dog will also be sleeping with her. He got annoyed and said he wants her to sleep on new sofa and said I am over complicating things. MIL even said oh brilliant, new sofa, can’t wait to sleep on it!

I just don’t went the new sofa being ruined basically! More than happy to make an alternative bed a comfy option for her to stay. AIBU?

I’ve slept on the sofa at my daughters house (with my medium sized dog) and it’s lovely - I can also watch tv from there! We now also have a very nice blow up double bed that has an electric pump. Much better for me and my dog in fact but I was initially worried as I had bad memories of sleeping on a leaky small blowup bed (worse than a lilo!) at a friends house. But the new blow up beds are much MUCH better esp with the automatic pump, and not expensive.

Someone else has suggested one of the temp covers for your new sofa and that also sounds like a good idea. I can’t imagine that your toddler won’t put sticky fingers on the new sofa as well!

Please don’t give up your bed, you need sleep when pregnant and your mum would probably not want you to move out of your room anyway.

Hope new sofa goes well 🌷

Frankly life's to short for all these handwriting. It's a sofa why didn't you get a sofa bed if your MIL stays with you? Blow up beds are sweaty and miserable. Get some protective covers and stop being so precious. Is MIL babysitting when she comes over? Is the dog a st Bernard or what? Storm in a teacup

I think it is unreasonable to not let her sleep on the sofa but not unreasonable to draw the line at the dog, unless you could cover the sofa first to avoid hair and scratches? As others have said your sofa will not look nice and new long with a toddler. We brought our sofas pre kids when we moved in 6 years ago and I am definitely not replacing them till my kids are a bit older and not likely to spill stuff on them etc. kids will evitable spills drinks on a sofa, drop food/snacks, dribble, snot, potty training accidents, or even better sick on it, should have saved you money for a few years down the line.

YANBU
sofas get smelly if they are slept on. No way would I have someone sleep on my new sofa and 💯 not reasonable to have your dog sleep on the furniture in someone else’s house .

If you put the right covering on under the person why would they make the sofa smell any more than people sitting on them?

YABU for not buying a sofa bed!

We didn’t buy a sofa bed as we have quite specific dimensions we were working to for our room. The sofa we got is exactly the right size for our room. It was hard to find the right size. We felt it made sense to prioritise this rather than try and shoe horn a sofa bed that doesn’t fit.

In that case you really have no case for objecting to MIL using the sofa to sleep on. If you wouldn't compromise on the sofa bed, you'll need to compromise somewhere else.

In any event, it's very difficult to work out how you claim you have enough room for a sofa and a pop-up bed, but no room for a sofa bed.

Sofa beds aren’t as comfy as regular sofas as they sag quicker or the mechanism breaks. That’s why we don’t have one.

so I get your point there.

We wanted an L shaped sofa with left sided corner and had to be specific width at side and back to fit the corner.

The thought process is MIL sleeps over around 12 times a year. We will be using this sofa as a family multiple times a day all year. The priority was getting a sofa that fitted our family’s beds, not MILs. As happy as I am to accommodate a pop up bed or blow up bed. And I am now open to letting her sleep on sofa with proper covers the dog issue still to be decided!
