To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

I thought they looked smart, relaxed and happy. I liked the asymmetrical waistcoat.

mids2019 · 29/07/2025 07:32

I think this is careful PR. Some women may feel it is the f feminist thing to look purely lorry and have no obvious glamour/sexuality on show. It's all about the sport.

It always provoked debate when sports women where something glamorous (or revealing). We have had the likes of Sharipov a in tennis getting more profile for her looks and figure than the the tennis (and the money flowed because of the modelling). Are the footballers wary about this? With low woman footballer salaries there is always a temptation for the women to go to the 'dark side' and get lucrative modelling contracts etc. which maybe at the moment people want to supress.

mids2019 · 29/07/2025 07:35

There are a couple of footballers who are particularly attractive and I can see being tabloid fodder for glamour shots in the future and maybe one thought was to make this shot all about the sport (including the baggy sports) so for at least this one occasion there was no dstraction. Baggy clothes don't reveal and figure differences and so just removes any attention (especially from men) to curvy figures.

Sizzer40 · 29/07/2025 07:37

They look great. Bang on trend actually.

Let me guess... Cynical boomer, hates Megan, comments on people's weight, and thinks all this gender stuff is ridiculous.. 😂

TheDivergentEnigma · 29/07/2025 07:38

"Are they trying to make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say, "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them..."

Never mind your thoughts suggesting they are dressed like that to look ike men because women's football shouldn't be allowed - Why can't women wear what they want without being judged, why do they have to be dressed differently? Who are you to say the trousers dont suit them?

I think your post is quite sexist. I often get this attitude for being female but preferring non-feminine clothes and activities, not liking makeup, etc. Strangely and frustratingly, comments often come from other women - definitely seems like internalised sexism to me.

Leave them alone, they are fantastic athletes at the top of their game, and you're judging them on being dressed wrong.

whackamole666 · 29/07/2025 07:41

I thought they all looked great and relaxed and elegant - except for the shorts which were ok but didn't really suit the occasion.

Also the mix and match colours worked well.

I presume (hope) the team had some input into the team look and weren't just shoved into an outfit without having a say about it.

Onleemoi · 29/07/2025 07:42

Imagine thinking everyone should dress to your tastes. The confidence of some is astounding.

Holdingonfornow · 29/07/2025 07:44

They look fine yabu

dottiedodah · 29/07/2025 07:45

TBH I didnt really take in what they were wearing! They looked every inch the winner happy, confident and cool.Every little girl has a positive role model now.The boys dont have that .How many male footballers have been caught "at it" with numerous young women (one or two even charged with Rape). Our girls are brave (Lucy Bronze playing with broken leg)Sassy and wholesome. They deserve to be on a par with the lads now

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 29/07/2025 07:45

This. Since Sunday night there has been so many sugar coated sexist and
misogynistic comments on here. It's like some posters really cannot bring themselves to fully support other women without putting a sting in there too. Even the posts declaring they are "not having a go at the lionesses but..." don't make any mention of the big shiny trophy they are holding. Which they hard fought for and won.

DBD1975 · 29/07/2025 07:49

What was the point of going to Downing Street if the Prime Minister wasn't in?!!!!!

Aethelredtheunsteady · 29/07/2025 07:53

This might be a revelation to some people on this thread but not everyone picks clothes based on ‘flattering’. We all know 9 times out of 10 flattering means slim and I reject the idea that you should have to try and hide parts of yourself (broad shoulders, bigger hips etc). Besides if we’re going to tediously reduce women to what they wear and how they look all the waistcoats showed off some pretty impressive upper arms.

Also surprised at all the comments saying young women don’t shop at M&S, the last few years they’ve started to become quite popular. Plus it’s completely normal for sports teams to turn up in their sponsors kit for those suggesting they should have been wearing their own clothes. You don’t see men’s teams turning up to this kind of event in their own gear. The fact that women’s sport is getting proper sponsorship should be seen as a massive positive.

I think they look great. I love the waistcoat and baggy trousers, the colour palette draws your eye to the medal. The shorts aren’t my cup of tea but I have plenty of friends who love that more androgynous look and would definitely wear them.

Besides - if you want to see bad tailoring look at some of the suits rugby players wear to their team photos at major tournaments (off the top of my head Scotland at the last World Cup) - their sponsors have had way more notice to get them in something properly fitted for a planned photocall than a reception presumably planned last minute as there’s no guarantee that they’d win.

mids2019 · 29/07/2025 07:58

I thinks it's important to show girls glamour and body image are secondary to sport. I wish we could have teenage versions of this attire for the end of year party for our local girls team instead of girls (as girls do) go for max glamour and make up. Having women spokespeople dressing in figure hugging outfits gives to many opportunities for body shaming which may deter women (and especially girls) from sport.

(Also I suspect the FA PR are wary of the appearance of too many 'high club' shots of the players and want to bring some balance)

LemonMum21 · 29/07/2025 07:59

Yeah dude this is YOUR opinion.

YOU think the outfits "don't do much for them" what the fuck does that even mean? Do the girls even want outfits to "do much for them" realistically? They aren't going to Downing Street to try and pull a geezer are they? They're there to celebrate an achievement.

You have the male gaze, it seems like you think women have to wear flattering outfits and be pretty all the time. It's an unrealistic expectation, take a hard look at yourself.

Oh also THEY HAVE JUST PLAYED A WHOLE TOURNAMENT OF PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL, are you fucking okay? I tell you what OP you do what those women did and tell me if you feel like dressing in dresses and heels and rubbing shoulders with 10 Downing street when I'm sure they just want to sit on the sofa and eat chocolate or something omg.

The idiocy.

GrumpyExpat · 29/07/2025 08:11

I completely agree with you but I also don’t care, if that makes sense. It just looks boring and unfashionable. People saying, oh but they’re athletes, not fashion models… don’t make me laugh. So many athletes sponsored by fashion labels and apparently these are choices because they are sponsored by M&S?? Not doing much for the label imho

EvilEdna44 · 29/07/2025 08:15

They look like I look when I go to work as a secondary school teacher. I am not a skirt person. Presumably, neither are they. Not sure what the problem is.

solando · 29/07/2025 08:17

I suppose they could have looked totally ridiculous and dressed like the government women do in Me + Em. I think I prefer the M&S

TaupeLemur · 29/07/2025 08:21

What would have been better??? Matching Next suits from 2000 with a chunky heel?? Maybe some slinky dresses with 4 inch heels?
they look modern, comfortable and the ‘look’ clearer takes into account the kind of clothes that they all feel comfortable in. No trying to ‘girly’ up the more tomboyish ones, or the gay girls, or the ones who just prefer pockets in their clothes!

TaupeLemur · 29/07/2025 08:23

And how FUCKING tedious is it that someone wants to focus on their ‘fashion’ when they’re athletes who have achieved something that no major England team in any sport has EVER achieved?

DBD1975 · 29/07/2025 07:49

What was the point of going to Downing Street if the Prime Minister wasn't in?!!!!!

It's been done over the years, not just football teams, but Cricket as well. Unfortunately the timing means the summer recess.

Once again the agest comments are allowed to stand.
I don't think M&S, given the women's ages are a good fit. They supply the men's and when the women wore typical smart office wear, it worked, but this didn't, as much.
When the Luis Rubiales scandal happened, it came to light how little control the women's team had about anything, so actually, it's ok to question if they chose the look.

What was the point of going to Downing Street if the Prime Minister wasn't in?!!!!!

They went to a celebratory reception hosted by Angela Rayner. Doubt any of them were massively desperate to have Keir Starmer there!

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 29/07/2025 08:25

The internalised misogyny on display from some posters is absolutely staggering. The very fact that any of you think it’s acceptable to criticise the appearance of these women’s bodies in their clothing shows just how deeply the patriarchal expectation that women should dress for a male gaze runs.

Om83 · 29/07/2025 08:30

just googled it and I thought it was the right way to go- quite neutral (boring?) as you know if they’d have made any type of fashion statement, tight or revealing it would be all about that, objectifying them as women, and not as the amazing athletes that they are.
