To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

It's been done over the years, not just football teams, but Cricket as well. Unfortunately the timing means the summer recess.

Once again the agest comments are allowed to stand.
I don't think M&S, given the women's ages are a good fit. They supply the men's and when the women wore typical smart office wear, it worked, but this didn't, as much.
When the Luis Rubiales scandal happened, it came to light how little control the women's team had about anything, so actually, it's ok to question if they chose the look.

M&S is actually having a bit of a moment on TikTok/Instagram etc so I don’t think age is really relevant.

"Are they trying to make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say, "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them..."

Never mind your thoughts suggesting they are dressed like that to look ike men because women's football shouldn't be allowed - Why can't women wear what they want without being judged, why do they have to be dressed differently? Who are you to say the trousers dont suit them?

I think your post is quite sexist. I often get this attitude for being female but preferring non-feminine clothes and activities, not liking makeup, etc. Strangely and frustratingly, comments often come from other women - definitely seems like internalised sexism to me.

Leave them alone, they are fantastic athletes at the top of their game, and you're judging them on being dressed wrong.

Exactly this. The idea that women have to dress in 'flattering' clothes i.e. clothes and shoes that accentuate their curves and perhaps appeal to the male gaze, or that they just need to 'look nice' is so sexist. Comfort and practically seem to fly out the window when women are wearing shoes they can't walk in (let alone play football in), dresses they can't sit down in without revealing everything and skimpy tops in the depths of winter. Why is there so much focus on women's appearance?

Avantiagain · 29/07/2025 08:39

I think they look fine.

Yep you're right, let's focus on their appearance rather than their achievements. It's what women are used to after all ...

Thing is, from the lousy fit of the outfits you wouldn’t think they’re professional sportswomen. Professional biscuit tasters maybe, but athletic sportswomen, no.

Why do you think it’s acceptable to critique the appearance of the women’s bodies in their clothing? You’ve moved beyond criticism of the clothes themselves and you clearly feel justified in this.

pokewoman · 29/07/2025 08:46

A) they look nice. They look comfortable.

B) they have just achieved something incredible...why the fuck are you focusing on anything to do with their appearance?

waltzingparrot · 29/07/2025 08:46

There were quite a lot of different pieces in that collection, so I'd presume they got to pick the pieces they wanted.

1one · 29/07/2025 08:47

I thought they looked fine.

mids2019 · 29/07/2025 08:47

the average salary of a wsl player is £47, 500 pa (minimum 20K) for a career with an early regiment age and little in the way of maternity leave payment etc. A junior doctor would be striking in a split second for these salaries....(and maybe nurses looking at the bottom) How many world class athletes or simply workers at happy with 20K a year. (Now compare those with the men).

the point is that we all know some of these footballers are going to massively benefit from sponsorship and looks/sex appeal unfortunately do feature in these prospects (terrible though it is). We had a great performance in women s power living at the Olympics but the athletes there will not get the opportunities of a an Emma Raducanu with an incredible figure.

therefore I think the band baggy clothing is an important symbol of solidarity amongst the women team where they can put out of the question looks and figure variation in reference to important team bond ing.

What was the point of going to Downing Street if the Prime Minister wasn't in?!!!!!

That's why we have a Deputy PM.

Thing is, they ARE professional athletes, so what they're wearing IS what those professional athletes wear. Or do you know some secret uniform for what a champion international women's football team should wear to Downing Street?

TheRealGoose · 29/07/2025 08:50

successful women picked apart for their clothes. It’s just shameful. And possibly by another woman too.

IvanaTinkles · 29/07/2025 08:51

The internalised misogyny on this post is awful!

The comment about the low heels is particularly horrific. Lucy Bronze played that whole tournament with a fractured tibia, Lauren James went off injured in the final, others are probably carrying injuries too, but they should risk long term damage that could affect their careers by teetering along in high heels, because OP doesn’t like low heels?

Jesus fucking Christ

SuburbanSprawl · 29/07/2025 08:54

This is really the most depressing and disheartening comment I've seen concerning the Lionesses.

It's worse than Barton's. He's an arsehole and he intends to be insulting.

But there's a sense here that this post is somehow supportive.

"I mean, well done winning the tournament - twice! - and we're all so proud of your achievements! But - girls - those outfits! What were you thinking?"

....it's very close to funny, actually. I do hope it's intended as satire.

Westfacing · 29/07/2025 08:54

HonoriaBulstrode · 28/07/2025 22:20

They are representing the country. They should look smart. Tailored navy trousers or tailored shorts would look better than baggy beige.

Tailored navy trousers would look very old-fashioned - paler baggy trousers are more fashionable IMO.

I thought they looked great!

Westfacing · 29/07/2025 08:57

They 'represented' the country when they won the UEFA Women's Euro, for the second time in a row!

Cherrytree86 · 29/07/2025 08:58

@BasilParsley

youre absolutely right, OP!

They all should all be in a nice dress - just below the knee- and some heeled pumps. They need to be more lady like. None of this baggy stuff.

lljkk · 29/07/2025 08:59

I' ve seen plenty of pics of the same Lionesses at awards events very dolled up in "conventional" feminine outfits, In this situation... they have been travelling, they went for a group look that was comfortable, sensible footwear (those feet are very valuable) and probably the outfits required minimal ironing or fabric care to pull out of the bag after many hours of travelling !! It's a formal centre of government and they showed it respect by not turning up looking like they want to go clubbing.

If their legs were on show with sexy dresses that would be ok but legs on show wearing shorts is not ok. Like... wtaf is that perspective?

They look fine to me !

ps: they literally wear outfits that look a lot like what Angela Raynor has worn to work that day, too. The photos look great.

zacsGranny · 29/07/2025 09:01

Not read the whole thread, but I thought the clothes did M & S no favours as they looked badly made, with puckered seams.

EviesHat · 29/07/2025 09:02

Amazing how many of those complaining that the people who are criticising the outfits are displaying internalised misogyny, totally blind to the fact that by claiming this they are defining the female players by their clothes.

Do I believe the Lionesses chose to wear those clothes from their own free will? No I do not.

Those outfits are part of the official team uniform. Employees are not responsible for the uniform choices of their employers.

According to press releases the collection is the responsibility of either Maddy Evans, Director of M&S Woman, or Lisa Ilis, Head of Womenswear Design at M&S. There’s mention of ‘input’ by the Lionesses, but I very much doubt that women in their 20s with their own strong sense of style, would freely choose to go out in a beige polyester trouser suit with elbow length jacket sleeves.

Criticising the poor fit of the outfits worn to Downing Street is NOT a criticism of the women wearing them, the responsibility for those clothes lies firmly at the door of M&S. Compare the fit of the ones worn in the official fashion shoot to those worn on the street - not to mention the uneven hems!!

Smokiejoe · 29/07/2025 09:03

Obviously it doesn’t really matter what they look like but I think everyone looks okay except for the two in shorts. They look a little bit like old fashioned schoolboys.

Swiftie1878 · 29/07/2025 09:05

BasilParsley · 28/07/2025 22:51

I understand that point of view - but were they really comfortable and liked what they were wearing given that it has now been, apparently, confirmed they were dressed by M&S? (My point of view on their attire is totally different from their success on the pitch - they did a cracking job there!),

You are feeding the misogyny. Who gives a sh*t what they’re wearing? Would you have commented on a men’s team attire?

EviesHat · 29/07/2025 09:05

LillyPJ · 29/07/2025 08:49

If the team really were in charge of their outfits you think at least some of them might have chosen something with neat, even hems, correctly sized shoulders and properly finished seams, wouldn’t you?

Unless, of course, you think all the women on the team are totally incapable of dressing themselves.

TitaniasAss · 29/07/2025 09:06

Really? Have you been out much recently? Beige, baggy clothes are the look of the day. Apparently. 😊 Do I like it? Not really, but I'm not a young woman in my 20s anymore.

That’s a lot of words to say that you feel completely justified in saying that they look fat in their clothes.
