To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

I poke my head back above the parapet briefly to mention that I think this screen shot of them on their well deserved victory parade is far more engaging - fashion is not involved (apart, perhaps from the commentators) I will reiterate - I think they did a bloody brilliant job!
Struggling with adding pix... Fingers crossed...

FFS! Are we, as women STILL not past judging women on their clothing? Never mind their achievement in reaching the highest level of their chosen sport (and their winning a championship that continues to elude the men's team), no, it's their fucking outfits that you have a problem with. The outfits provided by one of their sponsors. Shame on you.

They’re not interesting. They’re foul mouthed louts.

I thought they were really much more coherent than your average male footballer being interviewed.

BasilParsley · 29/07/2025 18:40

Trying again...

Clearly I can't attach a screen shot. But maybe I can add this vid? They are far more colourful and natural than they were yesterday..

OP, I think the only putting your head above the parapet should be to apologise for choosing to publish criticism of the Lionesses’ clothing on the internet, on what is an incredible day for them to enjoy and remember. WHY contribute to negativity about women in sport or in the public eye based on clothing? Why not focus on what it is they have achieved, who they are and what they are proud of? They are not fashion objects and never put themselves forward as such. Let them have their joyful day without the miserable nitpicking fashion commentary.

LlynTegid · 29/07/2025 18:42

I think this is a distraction from the most important thing about their visit- who did Larry the Downing Street cat like?

They always want them to look like a sporting team, they do. It was probably a good compromise, I cannot imagine a men's team having this critique - which is a bid sad and kind of plays to the "anti women's football" crowd (or should that just be anti women🙄

Not really true. M&S have kitted out the men before and they looked brilliant.

Is this car park puddle deep? Well, yes. But you also have to remember M&S are trousering a potential bundle so it wouldn’t have hurt them to up the ante. Could have helped their post cyber fuckup massively as well.

AFrolicOfMyOwn · 29/07/2025 18:48

I haven’t read much beyond headlines on their return so this may all be wrong, but my impression (informed by the hour I accidentally spent watching BBC news wait for the team yesterday) was that the clothes might have been taken to the airport, swiftly chosen and tried on - and any necessary alterations carried out on the spot. That would explain any haphazard fitting and wonky hems. (They certainly didn’t wear them on the flight, and it would have been pointless to take them all the way to the competition and back.)

But I still think they looked fine and appropriate for the occasion.

I wasn't criticising the team - I was criticising the people who dressed them... I agree, they are not fashion objects and their achievement is brilliant. But, it's media and PR who force such bland fashion on them... Was any one of them able to say "actually, I think I might like a yellow belt there?". No, I think not...

You are being unreasonable for thinking anyone gives a shit what you think about their outfits.

I am no fashion icon, but I think for both the lionesses and for M+S the Downing Street outfits are a miss. The leisure wear for the parade looks great but I think the Downing Street clothing looks so ill fitting on so many of the women. Most look at least one size too big, some legs are too short, others too long.

They deserved a lot better than that, and M+S should have provided them with properly tailored clothing.

StarlightRobot · 29/07/2025 19:05

OP- your subject title describes their outfits as ridiculous. If you wish to row back and accept it is mean and unnecessarily rude, now would be a good time. They are young women in their twenties with their photos splashed all over the media. They rightly are being recognised for their fantastic achievement. There is no need to nitpick over what they are wearing and no need to create a narrative that they look ridiculous. They look happy and proud- good for them.

Yes, we would:

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/england-world-cup-suits-southgate-28500852

Ok, they didn't win, but it would be discussed. Marks and Spencer pay to sponsor the team so it will be in a contract that the outfits need to be discussed. It's business - what's so hard to understand?

Edited

I highly doubt there was a post on Mumsnet discussing what the male footballers wore. A piece in a newspaper (advertisement) is not what I meant. What is so difficult to understand about that?

Member968405 · 29/07/2025 19:14

All M n S clothes are horrific. Everything they make is either the wrong cut, the wrong colour, the wrong fabric - usually all 3. They’ve had the misfortune of being sponsored by them.

Trishyb10 · 29/07/2025 19:21

Its not a fashion shoot, they,ve got to the event, been told to put those clothes on and there we have it, heck, theres alot more going on in the world then baggy trousers

Thanks for your comment @StarlightRobot and the suggestion I "row back". But could you please explain how I have been "mean" and "unnecessarily rude?". My personal view is that the outfits they wore in that original picture are ridiculous. I am also concerned they may have been 'forced' (for want of a better word - although maybe 'coerced' might also be a better one) to wear them simply to appease a sponsor...

OP posts:
carchi · 29/07/2025 19:31

They don't need to be fashion icons just to suit you. They are top athletes who are proud of their sporting achievements. Why can't you just accept their success and how inspirational they are to young girls instead of just looking at what they are wearing?

placemats · 29/07/2025 19:36

The outfits were not "ridiculous" to quote you @BasilParsley

Sarina said it was an absolute honour to stand in the rose garden at No Ten Downing Street.

Hunstanton · 29/07/2025 19:38

I thought this too. Woeful choice of clothes. Makes no sense at all.

BasilParsley · 29/07/2025 19:41

I am absolutely sure Sarina and every other woman of the England team who stood there in the Rose Garden at 10 DS felt honoured - and they should feel so - they did a brilliant job. Doesn't mean to say I can't criticise their sponsor's choice of outfit for the post match shots...

StarlightRobot · 29/07/2025 19:42

@BasilParsley

Describing their outfits as ‘ridiculous’ was mean and unnecessarily rude.

The design may not be to your taste, or you may not like the colour or tailoring or the general styling, but there is nothing ridiculous about what they are wearing. It’s an awful put down and a great way to make any young woman in the limelight feel unnecessarily self conscious. I am not the only poster who has said this, and so I think you are being deliberately obtuse with your question.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 29/07/2025 19:42

It’s really disappointing that the OP has returned only to argue the semantic point of whether she was criticising the Lionesses,
or their PR, or M&S. The point that dozens of us have tried to make is that passing negative comments on the clothing worn by women in the public eye is a symptom of a deep-rooted patriarchy which ultimately thinks that women should dress for the male gaze and that their appearance is public property and fair game for comment.

The faux concern that they have been coerced into the clothing is actually laughable. Do you feel the same anxiety when Charles Leclerc puts on his sponsors’ watch and baseball cap for the podium?
