To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

It’s not, though. You said that the women looked like professional biscuit tasters rather than professional sportswomen. That was a direct judgment on the appearance of their bodies in the clothing, which you feel justified in making because we all live in a society where women’s bodies are public property.

You aren’t the first MNer to make an ill-advised post after midnight and you won’t be the last. I can tell, however, that you’ve decided to double-down on this and would sooner combust than acknowledge your poorly-chosen words which crossed the line from critiquing the clothes to criticising the bodies inside them. I’ll therefore bid you a good morning.

Gwyneth Paltrow wore a much criticised outfit to the Oscars in 1999.

Part of the criticism was due to the frothy pink colour and 1950’s era cut, not the fashionable thing back then.

But a lot of the criticism was because the dress didn’t fit - it was too big. Gwyneth looked like a kid raiding her mother’s wardrobe for dressing up.

Princess Charlotte wore a bridesmaid’s dress to the wedding of Meghan & Harry that didn’t fit and had an obviously uneven hem. She looked lumpy and tied in the middle.

Neither are those criticisms of the humans beneath the fabric.

The poor fit and finish of the garments made the wearer look a funny shape, far removed from the shape they actually are.

I stand by my comment on the outfits imposed on the Lionesses. These are professional athletes who will have well-defined muscles, they are unlikely to be carrying much fat.

For their outfits to give the impression they are short and stout (even the tall members!) indicates just HOW BAD THOSE OUTFITS ARE!

Look at photos of the women when they’re in their own clothes. They each have very different styles, they each wear them well. And they choose things that fit and flatter their style, things which look a world away from the unholy mess that M&S have pushed them into wearing.

TaborlinTheGreat · 29/07/2025 09:43

FGS. Why do we always have to focus on what women are wearing (and what size they look)? It's totally unnecessary.

needtostopnamechanging · 29/07/2025 09:48

They look short ? Really? You are a poor judge of height then if you rely on tighter clothes to work it out

MollyMaidsRightArm · 29/07/2025 09:48

They are horrible clothes.

For the posters jumping on OP do you genuinely believe what you're saying?

The outfit is ghastly. It looks like cheap polyester, it doesn't fit properly anywhere, the colour is dire.

It' s quite possible to be sporty, role models and champs and look decent too.

Most of those women are very 'into' their appearances as you can tell by their coloured hair, nails, tatts, make up etc.

The look like something provided by the CCP- just dreadful.

No one mentioned tighter. Tailored, yes, tighter, no.

If you don’t know the difference I can see why you don’t understand the criticism.

It’s fairly standard for a sports team to have a ‘uniform’ for both playing in and for media appearances. It can’t be easy to choose a range of clothing that suits everyone’s taste and body shape. It’s exactly the same for the Team GB Olympic athletes - they’re provided with a range of clothing, they can choose what items they use. I think what they were wearing was fine, I’m sure not to everyone’s specific taste, but as a uniform for a media appearance absolutely fine.

You don’t get this sort of commentary on the men’s football team do you - nobody says their suits looked a bit shit. In the grand scheme of things, it’s completely unimportant and detracts from what they’ve achieved.

There is always loads of commentary around the outfits designed as the uniforms for the Olympic teams, men and women.

Which doesn’t detract from any celebrations over medals.

This thread was started as a comment on the Team Uniform, as chosen for them , not a slight on the women themselves, or comment on their looks.

Maybe because they are representing England?
The fact they are being put into a uniform shows it's relevant.

Again - you can be brilliant in anything but that doesn't mean you don't give a shit about how you look. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

We are invited by M&S to admire the appearance of those women. That is what the contract for money with the team is all about.
M&S pay the team or the FA or whoever for the women to publicise the clothes.
The ladies wear the clothes they are photographed. We admire 'the look'. We buy those clothes so we look like the team.
Don't we. . . ?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/07/2025 09:54

I think the trousers and waistcoat combo looks good, less keen on the shorts but ultimately not something I would ever have thought to comment on before this thread. They are sports women not fashion models, they just won the Euros - again. Lets just be proud of them.

JHound · 29/07/2025 09:56

Isittimeformynapyet · 29/07/2025 00:27

Well no, not their looks at all. Rather the really frumpy, unflattering outfits they have been forced to wear!

British design at its best? I bloody hope not!

So you are worried about their looks.

LittleBitofBread · 29/07/2025 09:56

Where's the pic?

viques · 29/07/2025 09:57

FOJN · 28/07/2025 22:16

I thought they were footballers not fashion models.

Precisely this. All national ( and club) football teams have a “uniform”, in the UK the men all look like Gareth!

I thought those wide leg trousers were a good choice for a team of female athletes who have generous thighs and calves, anything more fitted would have a) made them look as thought they were copying the mens teams and b) looked a bit odd on women of very diverse heights and builds.

And who cares, they are the best role models for young women to have emerged since the Spice Girls ( and we all know what sort of role models they turned out to be) . It was great to see the fans at Southend Airport, so may young girls thrilled to see their icons, and looks as though the parade today will be the same.

Mistyglade · 29/07/2025 09:57

EviesHat · 29/07/2025 00:26

It isn’t putting the team down. The players will have had no say in what they were given to wear. They might have had a limited choice between black and sickly beige, but clearly blue, green, grey, yellow and red were completely off the cards.

It's no different from teams wearing clothing with corporate sponsorship logos emblazoned on them. Obviously no something they’d willingly choose to wear themselves, but part of a uniform when representing the team.

Criticising the clothes worn to Downing Street isn’t being critical of the players, it’s pointing out that they were failed by whoever agreed to the collaboration with M&S.

You don’t get it do you. I wonder what they’d say if you made these comments to them personally.

The comments are not about their faces, their hair, their nails, or their figures.
They are about the quality, colour and style of a suit provided by M&S as promotion for M&S.
That's what sponsorship IS.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 29/07/2025 09:58

The victory parade is at 12.10 today. I’m sure we’ll all eagerly return to this thread to hear OP and friends’ Perfectly Valid Fashion Critique of what the team are wearing then.

Nope. No time.
I'm focusing on the suits.

TaupeLemur · 29/07/2025 10:01

Personally I’m disappointed that they play in such masculine kits, a lot could be done for women and girls in sport if they just looked a little more feminine. Perhaps short dresses like the tennis players wear so we can see their underwear when they jump or stretch.
much more pleasing to the eye.

MollyMaidsRightArm · 29/07/2025 09:59

How rude and mean. Do you really think these wonderful young women care what someone like you thinks?

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 29/07/2025 10:05

I thought they looked great! I liked how there was clearly a theme but it allowed for some individuality.
It's disappointing to see a thread like this though.

EviesHat · 29/07/2025 09:28

Do you not see that saying that the Lionesses were too busy to choose their outfits for looks, so it doesn’t matter what they look like, is utterly bizarre?

Well fitting clothes make the WEARER stand out, they should make the person inside them the focus of the picture.

The design team at M&S have let the team down. Look at the Downing St photo and you see a sea of misshapen polyester, the women inside are playing second fiddle to bad design and fitting.

Wide legged trousers can look great, especially paired with flat shoes. But you have to choose components that work well together. Look at the photo and you’ll see the awkward length the trousers finish, some are catching on the tops of the shoes, some are puddling on the floor, some are waving in the breeze part-way up the legs like a Dexy’s Midnight Runners homage.

Compare the fit of the clothes on the team members in the official fashion shoots and then look at the fit on the members of the team as a whole. It’s a world apart.

At a guess the team provided M&S with their high street sizes - a 12 here, a 14 here etc. M&S then picked things off the peg and sent them off to the team. Basically mail order. But if you’ve ever shopped online you’ll know it isn’t as easy as trying on in store to get a good fit. And if you receive something with a wonky hem you’ll likely send it back for a refund. From the looks of it, that wasn’t an option for the women on the team.

I lay the blame firmly at the door of M&S. They are a major retailer and manufacturer, the link to the Lionesses is a huge marketing opportunity and the6 know that will result in sales. It is astonishing that they couldn’t therefore spare a few hundred quid out of the corporate budget to do a little quality control and fitting for the talented women who were wearing their creations on the world stage.

But I never said the lionesses were too busy to choose their outfits - I was referring to your comment with ‘input’ in inverted commas and saying that you couldn’t see the women on the team choosing their designs. I was suggesting that their focus was probably on their actual jobs rather than a victory celebration that was never a certainty.

Their looks are certainly more fashion forward than the standard menswear options for sports teams in similar situations (although that probably speaks more to the boringness of men’s fashion and ideas of masculinity etc which take us right back to tedious gender norms).

Although interested to see your justification for the biscuit eaters comment. What was it about if it wasn’t about the old chestnut of ‘flattering/tailored’ blah blah ultimately meaning thin.

Yes. That’s their looks.

Their attire is part of their looks.

Who cares what a bunch of athletes look like?

EviesHat · 29/07/2025 10:06

All of these ‘they’re athletes, not fashion models’ comments are just a way of saying ‘no one expects them to dress well, it’s beyond their capability’.

Pretty insulting way to view the team, tbh.
