To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

That’s a lot of words to say that you feel completely justified in saying that they look fat in their clothes.

Biscuit

They don’t look fat and I’ve never claimed they did. That one’s on you.

They DO look like they’ve been given a rag-tag bag of off-cuts from the bargain bin though.

Fetchthevet · 29/07/2025 09:09

Will we ever move on from talking about what women look like? I couldn't care less what they wore.

TitaniasAss · 29/07/2025 09:06

but I very much doubt that women in their 20s with their own strong sense of style, would freely choose to go out in a beige polyester trouser suit with elbow length jacket sleeves.

Really? Have you been out much recently? Beige, baggy clothes are the look of the day. Apparently. 😊 Do I like it? Not really, but I'm not a young woman in my 20s anymore.

Maybe, but most people buy clothes that fit and are finished well! 😂

Amazing how many of those complaining that the people who are criticising the outfits are displaying internalised misogyny, totally blind to the fact that by claiming this they are defining the female players by their clothes.

Do I believe the Lionesses chose to wear those clothes from their own free will? No I do not.

Those outfits are part of the official team uniform. Employees are not responsible for the uniform choices of their employers.

According to press releases the collection is the responsibility of either Maddy Evans, Director of M&S Woman, or Lisa Ilis, Head of Womenswear Design at M&S. There’s mention of ‘input’ by the Lionesses, but I very much doubt that women in their 20s with their own strong sense of style, would freely choose to go out in a beige polyester trouser suit with elbow length jacket sleeves.

Criticising the poor fit of the outfits worn to Downing Street is NOT a criticism of the women wearing them, the responsibility for those clothes lies firmly at the door of M&S. Compare the fit of the ones worn in the official fashion shoot to those worn on the street - not to mention the uneven hems!!

Thing is - a lot of the criticism of the tailoring or fit on this thread has been calling it unflattering as opposed to pointing out practical issues with the fit (eg it’s too long so they’ll trip etc). It underlies an underlying perception that women dress to look slim/‘attractive’ etc.

Plus I imagine the lionesses were probably too busy focusing they’re input on winning the tournament as without that they wouldn’t be having a reception to wear their suits to anyway so it would all be irrelevant.

EviesHat · 29/07/2025 09:12

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 29/07/2025 09:10

This you?

It is. It’s a comment about the OUTFITS which look sized for people some ten stones heavier than the wearers.

Amazing how you seem to think that criticism of an employer’s choice of staff uniform is criticism of the employees wearing it.

MiddleAgedDread · 29/07/2025 09:12

SouthernNights59 · 28/07/2025 22:33

Good grief! I was wondering what on earth they were wearing so had a look. They look great, happy and comfortable.

Same! They look like a smarter version of how most of the young women in my office dress!

Neverthesame · 29/07/2025 09:13

I think they look absolutely fine as well. Not so keen on the ankle socks with the shorts but I am too old for that look.

Daisyvodka · 29/07/2025 09:16

Oh this is a VERY funny thread now I've seen the picture - its literally whats fashionable at the moment! And for you to find it so horrendous you've made a thread about it means that your own style is probably extremely dated, you know, if we're commenting on what other people choose to wear...

Onleemoi · 29/07/2025 09:16

I’m sure this group have better things on their minds than uneven hems and appeasing other women’s fashion sense, thank fuck.

TitaniasAss · 29/07/2025 09:17

EviesHat · 29/07/2025 09:10

Well not really. Many, many young women but clothes in Primark, Shein etc because it's what they can afford. Neither could be described as 'well finished' and the fashionable 'fit' at the moment is pretty shapeless.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 29/07/2025 09:17

It’s not, though. You said that the women looked like professional biscuit tasters rather than professional sportswomen. That was a direct judgment on the appearance of their bodies in the clothing, which you feel justified in making because we all live in a society where women’s bodies are public property.

You aren’t the first MNer to make an ill-advised post after midnight and you won’t be the last. I can tell, however, that you’ve decided to double-down on this and would sooner combust than acknowledge your poorly-chosen words which crossed the line from critiquing the clothes to criticising the bodies inside them. I’ll therefore bid you a good morning.

TitaniasAss · 29/07/2025 09:20

The fact that you would refer to anyone at all, regardless of who they are, as 'professional biscuit tasters' @EviesHat is pretty appalling and speaks volumes. Come on.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/07/2025 09:24

They look fine, although the shorts and white ankle socks look odd. None of the clothes are what I would wear as I hate wide legged trousers and they don't suit me but the Lionesses look great.

DiggingHoles · 29/07/2025 09:27

BasilParsley · 28/07/2025 22:24

Sorry, but I'm not goading, I'm just not understanding That Look ...

What look? They are footballers not models or fashionistas.

I am willing to bet you never critique the outfits of male footballers. You should check your internalized misogyny.

Do you not see that saying that the Lionesses were too busy to choose their outfits for looks, so it doesn’t matter what they look like, is utterly bizarre?

Well fitting clothes make the WEARER stand out, they should make the person inside them the focus of the picture.

The design team at M&S have let the team down. Look at the Downing St photo and you see a sea of misshapen polyester, the women inside are playing second fiddle to bad design and fitting.

Wide legged trousers can look great, especially paired with flat shoes. But you have to choose components that work well together. Look at the photo and you’ll see the awkward length the trousers finish, some are catching on the tops of the shoes, some are puddling on the floor, some are waving in the breeze part-way up the legs like a Dexy’s Midnight Runners homage.

Compare the fit of the clothes on the team members in the official fashion shoots and then look at the fit on the members of the team as a whole. It’s a world apart.

At a guess the team provided M&S with their high street sizes - a 12 here, a 14 here etc. M&S then picked things off the peg and sent them off to the team. Basically mail order. But if you’ve ever shopped online you’ll know it isn’t as easy as trying on in store to get a good fit. And if you receive something with a wonky hem you’ll likely send it back for a refund. From the looks of it, that wasn’t an option for the women on the team.

I lay the blame firmly at the door of M&S. They are a major retailer and manufacturer, the link to the Lionesses is a huge marketing opportunity and the6 know that will result in sales. It is astonishing that they couldn’t therefore spare a few hundred quid out of the corporate budget to do a little quality control and fitting for the talented women who were wearing their creations on the world stage.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 29/07/2025 09:28

The outfits stood out for the wrong reasons. People have different tastes and whoever ok'd them has similar tastes to some posters.

Same as the fashion boards where some love dryrobes, scrunchie shorts, birkenstocks etc and other despise them.

No wrong or right. I personally found the outfits sloppy and people are allowed to say that.

needtostopnamechanging · 29/07/2025 09:31

Good another bash the lionesses thread

criticising what they wear? Can you hear yourself?

these are sports heros not fashion models and some of us think they look just fine

edit to add DH thinks they look just fine too

MidnightGloria · 29/07/2025 09:33

YABU. I'm glad they're not in tight clothes and high heels. They look happy and comfortable, and I actually really like the trousers.

carmak · 29/07/2025 09:35

These young women have great athletic bodies, they would look good in almost anything. I wonder if M&S stores are extra busy today.

loulouljh · 29/07/2025 09:35

I agree. I thought they looked hideous. Angela Rayneresque...

gamerchick · 29/07/2025 09:36

Ah it's women so of course their outfits have to be commented on 🙄

edwinbear · 29/07/2025 09:37

It’s fairly standard for a sports team to have a ‘uniform’ for both playing in and for media appearances. It can’t be easy to choose a range of clothing that suits everyone’s taste and body shape. It’s exactly the same for the Team GB Olympic athletes - they’re provided with a range of clothing, they can choose what items they use. I think what they were wearing was fine, I’m sure not to everyone’s specific taste, but as a uniform for a media appearance absolutely fine.

You don’t get this sort of commentary on the men’s football team do you - nobody says their suits looked a bit shit. In the grand scheme of things, it’s completely unimportant and detracts from what they’ve achieved.
