To think The West is morally bankrupt

America democratically elects an adjudicate rapist who sympathises with racists, hates women and will do anything to hang onto power. The UK and it's lickspitrlw leader fawn over Trump and says that Israel has rhe right to cut off food and water to Gaza. Then wairs a year watching children die before saying it is intolerable. Except he is tolerating it.We all are.
The West is pumping out carbon at a vast rate and will no doubt reject the flood of refugees that this will cause.
The West takes more than it's fair share of the world's wealth. Much of the West is based on colonial exploration and murder of the global south.
I used to think we were the good guys.
We are not. We are one of the worst things ever to happen to the planet and it's inhabitants.

I voted YABU because we don't all tolerate it. It makes me ill but I don't have my hands on the levers of so-called power and there are children here who need me. I have to make a realistic choice.

Yes, Western countries have done and continue to do terrible things. The US has been a war mongering bully for decades now, since they became the most powerful country in the world. That is not to say that there are not massive atrocities happening in many other parts of the world. The defect here is surely man him/herself, rather than West vs East. I think the UK is in a terrible position economically and in other ways. Many people would be far better off leaving so good luck to @SummerEve.

People do seem evasive on where is better that is not the west on threads like this.

Great if they do find a better place for them but it’s seems to be sticking point on saying where that is.

Or it could just be that it’s none of your business and adds nothing to the discussion.

I think you and op can’t say for another reason. If you say which non western country is better it becomes less abstract and the reality of their actions becomes noticeable.

The we hate the west only really works when the alternative isn’t talked about or identified with an actual place name.

The OP had gone a bit OTT, but I do believe the levels of morality, decency and tolerance have plummeted in the U.S A and U.K. over the last 10 years.

The U.S A. at the moment is undergoing a civil war, with a racist , insane, paedophile dictator as President supported by 10's of millions of the population , having gangs snatching people off the streets and chucking them in concentration camps. He's also sending troops into California and hates any state that didn't vote Republican.

Both countries are funding and supporting the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza. There is absolutely no justification for this. It is heartbreaking.

As for the U.K., well as a whole we have become a mean spirited, ignorant nation..Well England has at any rate. Supporting a racist, fraudulent chancer with millions of votes just because he shouts 'Stop The Boats' and appeals to fellow ignorant racists. He will be our next Prime Minister when Reform & Conservatives form a coalition..our own mini Trump.

What you would call ‘whataboutery’ or ‘distraction’, I would call context.

Globalisation, either deliberately or accidentally (I don’t think it was deliberate), caused vast wealth disparity and the welcoming of too many immigrants too fast, many with values very different from the west, caused resentment amongst those disenfranchised from society.

The ‘haves’ got cheap goods and servants, the ‘have nots’ lost their jobs or their bargaining capacity for a fair wage.

So, as ever in history, you got a reaction: Brexit in the U.K. and Trump in the U.S. They were always selling hot air but the promise sounded good.

As for global warming, it is a classic games theory problem where the equilibrium isn’t the most positive outcome for society.

What have you done personally to help with the issue? Everyone blames everyone else as we all maximise our own short term utility.

Each ‘side’ sees itself as moral.

I too am very intrigued to hear these places so much better than the West in terms of quakity of life.

Don’t worry, when I saw this thread I knew the same old ‘mistakes of the past’ (because engineered starvation, slavery and corporate greed are just mistakes) ‘we gave you the railway and vaccines’ and my favourite one is ‘if it’s so bad why do you want to live here, go home’ was going to be hashed out.

Mumsnet has a certain demographic of a certain age group that are on their way out anyway. Thankfully the demographics of the West are gradually changing so views like this will be a thing of the past and people will own their history because that’s the only way to have a better future.

Take the Gaza issue for example, one of the single most decisive event of our current times and it has caused an entire generation to wake up and educate themselves. As I said in my previous post, everything leads back to the OG coloniser in the Gaza case start at Balfour and you will end up at today’s genocide.

And my goodness, it’s all very evident on this thread.

Don't worry, OP. Western progressive liberal democracies are on the decline and, if the trajectory isn't reversed, in a few decades we too could be just like Russia or Syria or Venezuela. Happy days are just around the corner.

You’re taking this thread into an irrelevant direction because you’re offended by the truth. No one is saying the west is a bad place to live. The point of this thread is the lasting damage being done by western nations across the globe that is rendering the homes of others unsafe. By the way that’s the reason why people want to live here. If you don’t want refugees then tell your government to stop having a hand in creating them.
