What you would call ‘whataboutery’ or ‘distraction’, I would call context.
Globalisation, either deliberately or accidentally (I don’t think it was deliberate), caused vast wealth disparity and the welcoming of too many immigrants too fast, many with values very different from the west, caused resentment amongst those disenfranchised from society.
The ‘haves’ got cheap goods and servants, the ‘have nots’ lost their jobs or their bargaining capacity for a fair wage.
So, as ever in history, you got a reaction: Brexit in the U.K. and Trump in the U.S. They were always selling hot air but the promise sounded good.
As for global warming, it is a classic games theory problem where the equilibrium isn’t the most positive outcome for society.
What have you done personally to help with the issue? Everyone blames everyone else as we all maximise our own short term utility.
Each ‘side’ sees itself as moral.
