If you are NT

Do you instantly recognise a ND person?

Sort of related to a thread on here currently, I find it quite fascinating.
I suspect I’m probably ND and wonder if NT people recognise an ND person pretty much immediately? If so, how, what do you see?

I can spot a ND child within a couple times of meeting them but I’m not so quick to identify ND adults, especially if they are high functioning.

Im the opposite i can spot it in adults easier then children.

PollyBell · 26/07/2025 10:43

I dont have a label I think being labelled as NT is not a label I think is needed except by people who need to label things, same as I dont see why the label 'my autistic son/daughter is needed nor 'my xbox niece' or 'golf playing husband' or 'my left handed cousin' a person may or not have autism, ADHD, or anything but why does everything need a label slappen on it?

I have met people who appear to have something different about them to the majority of people i know or have ever knowingly met but I dont feel the need to label them

FullOfMomsense · 26/07/2025 10:53

I don't think I spot all ND people, but when I do, I'm always right. Particularly in social settings, meeting someone with no grasp of social cues, comes across as rude but not malicious (talking over me, no eye contact, avoiding noisy areas etc), talking about themselves a lot is usually an indicator, or about a subject they don't seem to care if I'm interested in. I've also been right about some friends who weren't diagnosed and convinced they were NT, who eventually got diagnosed with quite profound neurodivergency.

I don't want to sound like I'm generalising here, I know ND is a spectrum and each condition and symptom is a spectrum too, I don't stereotype. Just a brief gist of what I notice.

It was a joke to begin with but some of you are so touchy I thought I’d drag it out… ‘boring’ is subjective, I don’t understand why people are so offended by it.

Of course it’s subjective but it’s the sweeping generalisation that’s ridiculous.

As if only neurodiverse people can be interesting and have interests. lol, as you say.

do you really think that though? I am curious about why you think we’re boring. And I’m not trying to being smart.

im only joking in my last post before anyone jumps on me.

Well it's because we've struggled so much and we've thought ourselves defective. And we've been seen as defective. We've been disabled by having to live in a society created for neurotypicals with all your awful noise and busyness.

Now many of us are realising that in many ways we are the more rational, interesting and intelligent group. So we're making sure neurotypicals are aware that we're happy as we are and we don't want to be NT. I don't see why that would be hurtful.

What an awful perspective. "We were discriminated against so now we're discriminating back" Do you see other groups of marginalised people getting away with this? You're using your health condition as an excuse to be a dick, therefore giving more reason for people to hate you for that health condition. Good luck with that hun

You’re not a homogenous group you know. Some of you might be more intelligent, rational and interesting than others just like some NT people are It’s odd you want to lump everyone together as if you all have the same characteristics and speak for everyone. Not everyone who is ND thinks they’re defective. Not everyone who is ND dislikes noise. Don’t speak for the whole group.

I don’t have ADHD or autism. I do have diagnosed OCD. Not sure if that makes me NT or ND.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 26/07/2025 11:27

At time's it is noticeable that a person has special needs.
It depends on what parts of the spectrum they're on. A lot of people are diagnosed with autism previously known as aspergers, which isn't always obvious.
These days, many adults are seeking a diagnosis of ADD/ ADHD after years, they usually discuss it openly making it harder to tell as they've hidden in for years.

My original post was tongue in cheek tbh.
To rephrase - and it is sort of flipping the question, I can usually detect ND as I find their conversation/ interests (GENERALLY) to be more intriguing. I can agree not every NT is boring but I find MOST NT discussions to be mundane.

That's not what a "pick me" means though.

A "pick me" is someone who's making sure everyone knows how special and quirky they are. Nothing to do with appealing to the majority.

Burntt · 26/07/2025 11:36

I’m not NT so the question wasn’t meant for me but I’d like to add my two pennies worth.

I think subconsciously they do. Think about how much struggle there is for ND making friends with NT. often this difficulty isn’t there with other ND people.

there are lots of research studies out there showing how ND people are treated differently. Even when undiagnosed so the discrimination isn’t based on diagnosis it’s based on the differences in behaviour and communication. Off the top of my head two big ones I’ve read are; ND people are more likely to be considered suspicious or “difficult” due to their different social interactions. Less eye contact one obvious example. ND people are more likely to be held on remand before trial than NT for the same crimes. And ND are more likely to experience medical dismissal or disbelief than NTs for the same health issues this manifests in their reported symptoms being misdiagnosed, minimised or disbelief again this pattern is present pre diagnosis for a significant number.

so yeah NTs pick up on the difference wether they acknowledge that or not there are plenty of statistically significant findings to back this up

Who do you assume I am trying to impress here?

I thought this thread was for NT people to reply, but that must be because I am stupid, irrational and dull, like all NT people.

I don't assume anything. I just disagreed with your original definition of a "pick me".

fair enough, I think that’s probably a better way of putting it and you’re absolutely entitled to that opinion.

I would say I’m probably a very standard NT person so I’d likely put you to sleep within 5 seconds 😂😆
