Vaping is EVERYWHERE

So the kids are off on summer holidays and I am trying to find nice activities to do. Went to the cinema yesterday, and a father with her young daughter, just gets out his vape and has a puff right in front of me while we were waiting to go in.

Then today at a play centre, Im sat in the cafe and a mother gets out her vape and surreptitiously has some of the vape and the oncoming plume of smoke...in my bloody direction.

I've been in Tesco, and someone just used it casually as you like. When I mentioned it to staff, they just shrugged their shoulders....I didn't see it.

Its bad enough people inflicting others with their noisy phones, but why oh why do people do this?!! In areas where kids are playing???? I dont care that you are addicted...that is not my problem!! People who smoke are addicted and would never dream of lighting up a cig!!!

Rant over.....

Honestly not seen anyone vape. I'm in the Midlands. Have I missed it

You are ignorant the BMJ and all the studies show that the effects of bystanders and people vaping WILL NOT be fully knows until 2050. It’s a new thing. Any side effects won’t be now it will be 5-10 years plus down the line. It’s a health crisis for those kids that will loom over our heads in a few decades.

It’s been over 20 years now. There were vaping threads on here in 2013, vapes have been about for more than 2 decades

Anyonecanachieve · 24/07/2025 17:54

You own link says In 2022, UK experts reviewed the international evidence and found that "in the short and medium-term, vaping poses a small fraction of the risks of smoking".

what about the long term effects?

a current science paper conclusion on the benefits of using vapes to try to stop smoking….

In conclusion, while vaping may be less harmful initially than smoking. Long-term use can lead to nicotine addiction, respiratory problems, cardiovascular issues, and potentially other health complications. More research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects of vaping, but the current evidence suggests that it is not a safe alternative to quitting smoking…….

Anyonecanachieve · 24/07/2025 17:58

Well you carry on vaping then ……

meanwhile the long term effects on addiction in your people, the stress of the issues on the NHS and by then the other things that come to light will bugger all the vapers.

the only thing safe for your lungs is normal unpolluted air! Shoving anything else round it isn’t.

It's not just water vapour, it contains lots of harmful substances, just like passive smoking from cigarettes. It's antisocial and shouldn't be done anywhere and everywhere. If you wouldn't about a cigarette in the situation then you shouldn't vape there either.

Screenshots of google AI slop? Really?

I suppose we'll have to get used to this kind of shite now. It makes the people who provide wiki as a reference look intelligent.

ExercicenformedeZ · 24/07/2025 18:08

It's utterly gross. I actually would prefer cigarette smoke to vape fumes.

AngelinaFibres · 24/07/2025 18:08

Mehmeh22 · 23/07/2025 14:38

Its the fact they have it in their hand all the time. One time, I went for a meal in a pub and a woman was told to put it away because she kept using it.....then had the audacity to look pissed off! Lol.

I genuinely don't think this issue is as bad in other countries!

It's the adult version of a baby's dummy. Same level of intelligence required too.

Are you allergic to specific VOCs or just all of them? There are thousands used in vapes and a huge number are nature identical. You must have to avoid pretty much all fruit and veg! They'll be in the air whenever you can smell food.

Peanut allergy, like most allergies, is caused by a sensitivity to specific proteins, rather than VOCs. You can rest assured that there are no proteins in vapes.

I’m most highly allergic to cinnamates. These are very difficult to avoid in food, drugs, personal products, and just trying to leave the house. It’s a constant battle and trying new food can be terrifying because labeling laws are wholly inadequate for esoteric allergies.

while most people might relish the idea of walking past a bakery pulling out fresh cinnamon rolls, I dread such an experience because it can make my lips swell up and my throat get tight. Continuing to stand there would not be an option.

That’s a bit harsh. But at least you’re not making up bollocks about health risks.

Other valid objections to absurd, showy or brainless behaviour are to persistent water sippers, people who play music in public (including loudly from cars), take-away coffee graspers and gulpers, and performative parents.

But I reserve a special dislike for bossy and self-important people who impose on others. Particularly when they tell porkies to try to get their way.

Anyonecanachieve · 24/07/2025 17:37

@SilenceOfTheTimTams you are just ignorant www.bmj.com/content/366/bmj.l5275

This contains serious amounts of bobbins about diacetyl ('popcorn lung'), lipoid pneumonia (a made up 'potential risk' by someone who thought vapes were oil based), that formaldehyde study where they fired a CE4 at 10 watts (creating a badly burnt coil that no vaper could tolerate) and worst of all, EVALI (nothing to do with nicotine vaping)

It's practically the whole bingo card in one article.

PencilsInSpace · 24/07/2025 18:36

Anyonecanachieve · 24/07/2025 17:47

@SilenceOfTheTimTams maybe 5 out of a 100 of the local 16-18 year old smoked 10 years ago on a consistent daily basis, now about 95% vape and they aren’t just vaping once a day it’s constant. They are hooked. A survey in our primary showed 25 % of year 6 had vaped (no smokers) by year 9 this figure was 95%. They think it is healthy, cool and relaxing.

When smoking gets banned or smoking numbers decline - & don’t forget everyone that dies is no longer paying for cigarettes etc they need more muppets and a new thing to sell. Like ‘lite’ or menthol. Companies need new idiots to buy stuff.

Wow, where you live must be an extreme outlier!

Right, so you agree that these VOCs are already in the air from foodstuffs and you are already used to navigating around them.

Do you tell the bakery they're as bad as running up to people and smearing them with peanut butter?

JustSawJohnny · 24/07/2025 19:02

SilenceOfTheTimTams · 24/07/2025 16:13

lol, lol, lol.

🙄

You have no evidence to justify your wish to boss people around. Just admit it.

Evidence or not, it still looks chavvy and people shouldn't be doing it indoors at public places.

Now that’s an authentic and unvarnished social objection. I don’t agree, but I give full marks for honesty.

Men wearing football shirts in restaurants and women in pyjamas in the supermarket will be next. 👍

NicolaCasanova · 24/07/2025 19:47

Football shirts and pyjamas don’t end anger public health or indeed the health of the wearer.

gattocattivo · 24/07/2025 19:48

Couldn’t give a shit about any health risks, just don’t vape near me because it smells rank

littlebilliie · 24/07/2025 20:02

There will be a lot of people dying young from this

Mehmeh22 · 24/07/2025 20:20

SilenceOfTheTimTams · 24/07/2025 17:23

Which is fine. So we can object to all people’s personal habits, smells, sounds, conduct, and so on.

I don’t want to ban persistent nail biters from going out in public, or people talking incessantly on phones, or gulping water all the time, or wearing Chanel no 5. They may all piss me off, but I’m not going to pretend there’s some urgent health reason for restricting them.

How is nail biting the same as someone blowing chemicals in my face where I have no choice but to inhale?

Wearing Chanel....you are telling me you think its ok to spray the perfume in your face? Because just wearing it is a very different comparison.

I don't want myself or my children in a situation where they are forced to inhale it. Especially my kids.

Ah, right, “chemicals”.

gattocattivo · 24/07/2025 20:23

Hahahaha

ButterCrackers · 24/07/2025 20:23

Vapes are disgusting. What a waste of money and resources and bad for the lungs as well.

Mehmeh22 · 24/07/2025 20:31

Well its not exactly just water is it.

And once again, for those in the back.....

THIS IS ABOUT VAPERS WHO DO NOT GIVE A FLYING FFFF ABOUT VAPING INDOORS IN PUBLIC SPACES!!!!!!

Maybe Im now starting to get "hysterical" or potentially losing my mind smelling bubblegum vape....who knows....

Although I'd swap football shirts for men wearing no shirts in public 😬

Ohhh they were blowing it in your face were they? Why didn't you say so?

It's amazing how many anti-vaper posters have that exact experience when behaviour at that level of rudeness is IME quite rare from anyone. It's like all the posters (not on this thread so far) who have had to evacuate their hotel because a vaper has set off the smoke alarm at 3 in the morning - always 3am, never any other time.

Maybe the vapers run round blowing vape in people's faces because they're grouchy from having to wake up for a vape at 3am.

Or maybe Mumsnet is truly full of very unfortunate outliers.

Or something.
