Vaping is EVERYWHERE

So the kids are off on summer holidays and I am trying to find nice activities to do. Went to the cinema yesterday, and a father with her young daughter, just gets out his vape and has a puff right in front of me while we were waiting to go in.

Then today at a play centre, Im sat in the cafe and a mother gets out her vape and surreptitiously has some of the vape and the oncoming plume of smoke...in my bloody direction.

I've been in Tesco, and someone just used it casually as you like. When I mentioned it to staff, they just shrugged their shoulders....I didn't see it.

Its bad enough people inflicting others with their noisy phones, but why oh why do people do this?!! In areas where kids are playing???? I dont care that you are addicted...that is not my problem!! People who smoke are addicted and would never dream of lighting up a cig!!!

Rant over.....

You’re likely constantly inhaling air that has just been through somebody else’s entire respiratory system and is carrying some sort of moisture from their body. The smell is possibly valid but it’s a fact of life if you go where other people are.

Yeah, I guess it’s just more obvious when you can see and smell it 🙈

Hellomeee · 23/07/2025 17:51

StresHed · 23/07/2025 17:44

And no they aren’t flavoured water I think it’s basically inhaling different types of plastics?

It's vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol, both commonly found in food and drink. Hate it as much as you like but lying about it being plastics just makes you look silly.

I am not a vaper, Google is free ✌️

I dont want to breathe in what I know for a fact has been in your lungs. You may as well be farting in my face. I guess you consider that acceptable too? (Rhetorical question)

Er... live in a plastic bubble? Don't go out.

Anywhere you go with other people around, you are breathing in what will have been in someone elses lungs, several someone elses...

And you really don't want to think about how many people your drinking water has passed through before you get to drink it.

NewbieYou · 23/07/2025 17:55

Cigarette addiction and vape addiction are quite different in my experience of both. People sit at home vaping 24/7. It’s seen as less intrusive than cigs and importantly… the vape doesn’t have a stopping point like a cigarette going out. So people are having 50x the nicotine in a day from a vape than they did from cigs.

Theyre doing it because they’re a) incredibly addicted and jittery without it. They get what drug users call ‘itching’ for the nicotine. And b) they think they can get away with it inside… which as you’ve seen they can.

Its unfortunate but hopefully one day businesses will be as strict on vapes as they are cigarettes. I personally am happy to have kicked both…. But it wasn’t easy.

Cornettoninja · 23/07/2025 18:02

lol, I thought I was imparting a really cool fact to primary school dd pointing out that the water we drank and bathed in had probably been through a dinosaur or two as well.

Nope. She was disgusted Grin

BBQBertha · 23/07/2025 18:06

It’s vile. The worst place is the football sidelines. Grass roots. Meant to be smoke and vape free and all the idiots carry on vaping as they think it isn’t as bad as smoking. What a shitty example to set to children. Can’t even challenge them as they don’t see it as even being a thing. Twats.

DiscoBob · 23/07/2025 18:06

I guess it's inevitable because if you suck it all in there's not much that comes out or people exhale into clothing.

You can only point it out to staff I guess.
I guess as it's not combustion people are more blase. Not that it's great.

People can use nicotine pouches, patches, gum, inhalator all at once for a couple hours so it's not like they desperately need to actually vape.

Cornettoninja · 23/07/2025 17:08

Whilst I am a vaper and do adhere to the same rules as smoking I do find the rhetoric around passively inhaling vape steam somewhat hysterical.

do the same people get their knickers in twist over bbq smoke? Proven to be carcinogenic as is chargrilled/burnt food. I’m surrounded by neighbours who seem to cook every meal outside in the summer - can I go tell them off for polluting my precious outdoor air?

The world is full of potentially dangerous pollutants, putting aside those who insist on vaping indoors, getting all sniffy about vaping outside is just nonsense.

Daft comparison....you wouldn't have a bbq inside your house... aka enclosed space. Im not talking about walking around (although I don't like it). Im on about when your in enclosed spaces where it is banned.

And Im not being hysterical about it either! How ridiculous.

When you go outside you probably get more toxic fumes from the average car passing you. Isn't it just water vapour?

I personally find people irritating generally and I have to put up with them all talking loudly, blocking supermarket aisles, coughing without covering their mouths, pissing on toilet seats, taking up 1.5 parking spaces.

I can't imagine a bit of water vapour bothering me compared to the average irritating behaviour of people in public.

quicklywick · 23/07/2025 18:11

If they went back to allowing smoking again inside their wouldn't be people in queues and out and about smoking everywhere. I will vape in a queue as I know i wont be allowed to vape inside. If they had smoking areas inside I would wait until I was around other smokers

Tell that to my neighbours - their smoky attempts are evident inside my house far too often.

there are also plenty of people moaning about people vaping outside on this thread or I wouldn’t have commented. Not every comment is directed at you personally.

You are being slightly hysterical about some sweetened vapour.

So 🤷‍♀️

tobee · 23/07/2025 18:23

So defensive @RedSeven.

The pervasive smell of Britain in the U.K. in 2025 is fruity vapes and weed.

northernballer · 23/07/2025 18:25

A couple.of men in my office vape at their desks subtly. We've had a generic email to stop but they just carry on, it's rank.

Ponderingwindow · 23/07/2025 18:26

parakeet · 23/07/2025 16:52

Vapes create a cloud of water vapour, which may or may not be strongly scented. You may find the sweet smell unpleasant but it's really not harmful when breathed in second hand.
I'm not a vaper myself and would prefer if people didn't do it in public spaces indoors, but this scaremongering is ridiculous.
As for the fact that it has been in someone else's lungs...so has all the rest of the air around us!

If you have an artificial fragrance allergy the plume of scent is absolutely dangerous. It can trigger everything from asthma attacks to anaphylaxis.

Vaping is not harmless. Vaping around other people is similar to walking up to strangers and smearing peanut butter on them.

If you fart from your lungs you have bigger issues than a puff of steam in a queue to worry about.

LouH1981 · 23/07/2025 17:09

Jordan North did a documentary on them (might still be on iPlayer) which essentially confirmed that they are very much not just flavoured water. If I remember correctly he quit vaping as a result of what he found out and the danger they pose.
It’s the inconsideration for me. Why I should be forced to breathe it in just because someone else has chosen to be reckless with their health.

Oh yes I saw him on somewhere talking about the documentary and how he stopped vaping,

Yes because children and teenagers choose to spend time on mumsnet 🙄

a lot of vapers are inconsiderate arseholes.

Could be worse.. also where do you live where the smell is always of weed?

WonderingWanda · 23/07/2025 18:45

It's so revolting, such a putrid sickly smell. I think I prefer the smell of smoking to be honest.

OSTMusTisNT · 23/07/2025 18:45

I'm pretty sure more people vape now compared to the number of smokers in 80's and 90's. Government should get taxing them, packet of fags must be £20 ish (not my area of expertise) so slap tax onto vapes to have some minimum price of e.g £15 and kids will soon move onto something else. Or, maybe just go back to Diamond White and MD 20/20 like the good old days.
