To quite like being fat?

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 17:33

There was one time that i was 9 stone. This year i am the heaviest i have ever been.

Every week for that last year i have been thinking that i must lose weight, and i have been trying every diet , and thinking about food all the time.

I was so stressed from it all that i decided to give myself and not think about dieting for one month.

I was just thinking this month, I quite emjoy being fat. Im not morbidly obese, i am fat.

I feel nice and warm and cozy

When i was thin, i rememember feeling cold and having low energy a lot.

Has anyone else felt the same?

Has she a medical issue that is making her fat then as it is not through diet?

No. She just eats big portions I think. And she has a big build, tall, wide hips and shoulders. She's not obese, but fat, yes.

@Flumpflimpo this is the best post I've seen on mumsnet for ages. I was in stitches at the beginning when the skinny minnies simply could not wrap their heads around you being happy about being fat. Love your body, love yourself, be happy. 😊💯

This sort of thread has been done to death over the years.

Mostly by people who are confusing feeling relieved that they don't have to diet anymore, with feeling genuinely happy that they're obese.

I'm pretty sure if any of them could click their fingers and be slim, they'd do it in a heartbeat though.

I am making perfect sense.

I am saying that i feel mentally and physically great being fat.

However i also feel the severe western society pressure to be thin. Which is why i will start a diet again in september.

Pressure to be thin is only in our culture. Ive been to India. In India, people are admired for bing fat.

I told them that people are always trying to be thin in my culture. They said "what, people do that out of choice?"
Because to them: thinness is a sign of lack of food and sickness.

They really aren’t, Indian people are mean when they think you’ve gained weight. Someone ,made a beeline for me at my grandmothers funeral just to tell me I had got fat. They especially hate fat women, fat men are fine.

She must be eating enormous portions of fruit, veg and meat. Fair play to her on the no sugar, I don't think I could ever do that.

Morgenrot25 · 22/07/2025 19:21

It depends how 'fat' you are and also how much exercise you get, how balanced your diet is, and how stressed (or not you are), plus some genetic predispositions that you've no control over. I am not as slim as I once was, but I'm still not fat either, and am trying to focus on nutrition and activity, as well as generally taking care of myself.

I used to eat really healthily when i was thin

I just remember being really cold when I was thin, and i tired more easily.

Obiously it is nice to be thin and congrats to anyone who is.

Im just enjoying being fat for a while too.

OK but important to remember the health implications of being significantly overweight

I hate it and am thoroughly miserable about it

And it's going to be a hard slog losing it

I thoroughly agree OP,I am pleasantly plump and feel fine .I despair of the culture we have in the west that thin is good.Must be achieved by starving our good selves on diets which very often dont work anyway .Worse the Injections meant for diabetics, which many of us are shelling out for with no guarantees the weight will stay off when completed . Worse still, Fat is a feminist issue .as Susie Orbach says in her excellent book. How many men are slim and trim in older years especially?

She doesn't have to, no, but I'm pointing out her "It's so wonderful to be fat" posts don't mean a lot without knowing whether she is fat, and if so, how fat. All she has said is that she isn't morbidly obese - there's a very large window between 'healthy' and 'morbidly obese'.

She isn’t asking for your judgement as to whether she is technically fat or obese. She is saying she’s happy. Let it be.

Morgenrot25 · 22/07/2025 19:24

DiscoBob · 22/07/2025 19:11

As long as you're not physically uncomfortable then of course there's nothing wrong with being fat. Some people naturally do carry more weight or can't eat as much and be slim, some people enjoy eating a lot.

My friend is really super active and healthy but also fat. She doesn't eat sugar or drink booze, cycles all the time, goes hiking, does loads of exercise. I've other friends who are very slim who are much less active and healthy.

So it's about how you feel in yourself. Thin doesn't always mean healthier or happier.

It's impossible to not eat sugar, sugar is essential to life. Perhaps she means that she doesn't eat excess sugar or foods high in sugar.

CrispieCake · 22/07/2025 19:24

You need to find a compromise between enjoying feeling substantial and future-proofing your body by staying within sensible weight limits.

OP, I think there is a lot in this.

But I also think that your present attitude could be (inadvertently) helping you to reach a better and more sustainable approach. You mention feeling healthy and strong - I would focus on being mindful about what you can do, and what you can incorporate into your routine, that makes you feel this way and also increases your happiness. It is very hard to lose weight when stressed and unhappy, so perhaps there is something in losing the stress and freeing yourself from the unhappiness and just letting yourself be for a bit.

I am of Indian origin. They don't have a big obesity problem. They have a big diabetes problem because Indians tend to accumulate weight in their tummies. Like me. My entire family are slim or mildly pudgy diabetics.

I knew I hadnt imagined it. And medics and the authorities are concerned.

A major pro of being fat is having "lovely big boobs" and a con of being thin as having "smaller boobs"...? What is the benefit for a woman of having "big boobs"? How does breast size actually affect a woman's quality of life? Are you able to answer in such a way that doesn't contradict the rest of your message? Somehow I doubt it.

Zanatdy · 22/07/2025 19:28

If you’re happy in an obese weight category, then stay in it. I imagine it’s only yourself who is putting this pressure on. Interesting you don’t view a size 14 and 16 as obese. What size would you start to view obese? When you’re short like you (I am too), you can’t eat that many calories every day without gaining. It is frustrating, and I am also on a constant diet. I can lose and gain half a stone easily, and I always feel a lot better when I lose it. As we get older, weight gain isn’t purely a look things either, but a health issue. It’s your choice though whether you go on a diet or not. It makes me feel quite depressed when my trousers are hard to tighten or fat spills out of my bra. I lost 2 stone during lockdown 1 and genuinely felt so happy about it. Seeing the scales go down makes me happy.

Sorry, I meant she doesn't eat added or processed sugar or foods that contain it. She does eat fruit.

The reality is you won’t stay chubby you’re more than likely to be become obese and it’s associated health problems! You don’t have to be hugely overweight to develop high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes!

I used to think I was happy being overweight all gained post babies, I got to 58 and decided I didn’t want to be 60 and obese, so far I have lost 3 stone and dropped 4 dress sizes and believe me it’s so nice to shop in the same shops as my friends and not have to go for plus sized clothing!

Don’t kid yourself your happy as if you truly were you wouldn’t be posting on her for validation of being overweight!

Have you heard them say ‘I wish I was morbidly obese?’

Why? So you can then be judge, jury and executioner on whether or not she is "allowed" to feel good about herself???

I don’t think this is true. The first time I lost weight I found myself the centre of attention all the time. Men would stop me in the street and invite me out. I had no idea that would happen to me. It was scary because I wasn’t used to it. Even worse was that my tribe of fat women friends shunned me as I was no longer “one of them” and thin women welcomed me into the fold which was a bit of a shock as I remember at the gym one thin woman looking me up and down with disgust when I asked her a question about the class as she was too good to be spoken to by the likes of fat old me.

it was such a weird experience that I put that weight back on again double quick. The next time I lost weight I told myself that I would see it through no matter how uncomfortable I felt.

I think a lot of women would be comfortable in their own skin no matter their size if society didn’t put so much pressure on women to be thin.

There's processed sugar and there's natural sugars that occur in fruit etc though, so it depends what is meant by sugar. It's much healthier to not eat any food containing the processed type of sugar.

Totally agree. Fat and happy needs no endorsement. Fat and unsure whether its happy or not, well then validation is required.

I know quite a few thin people with high blood pressure and diabetes. My own blood pressure remains steady whether I have been thin, fat or indeed obese. No diabetes either.

There is no such thing as pleasantly plump, you’re overweight and it has potential to negatively impact on your health! And to be blunt you will probably get larger! I can say this because I have been overweight for most of my adult life, but not anymore, and my health is so much better! Obesity is a huge drain on the NHS! The fact you mention the very outdated book by Susie Orbach does little to validate your reason to believe obesity is acceptable!
