To quite like being fat?

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 17:33

There was one time that i was 9 stone. This year i am the heaviest i have ever been.

Every week for that last year i have been thinking that i must lose weight, and i have been trying every diet , and thinking about food all the time.

I was so stressed from it all that i decided to give myself and not think about dieting for one month.

I was just thinking this month, I quite emjoy being fat. Im not morbidly obese, i am fat.

I feel nice and warm and cozy

When i was thin, i rememember feeling cold and having low energy a lot.

Has anyone else felt the same?

Feeling miserable in your body is awful. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

If you're in a place where you're feeling peace and contentment about it all, that's great.

Everyone has differing boundaries around what weight range they feel best. Someone else's might be a lot smaller than yours. That doesn't mean they get to to tell you that you should want the same thing or feel the way they feel.

When you say 'fat' - what is your BMI?

It's bloody uncomfortable being genuinely fat. In summer you're too hot and have to contend with thigh chafing. In winter you're still too hot because everyone else has the heating up.

I am overweight, I've never suffered from thigh chafing and I'm the one turning the heating up in winter.

I read that over weight old people live longer. Not sure if that's true. But if you feel good OP then good for you

Only thing is you never see obese elderly obese people out and about, which makes you wonder if there are many of them around. So your post is welcome information

That's a drug with side effects.

Hardly the same as clicking your fingers and being slim.

It's worked for everyone I know. They are all as slim as when they were in their 20s. No major side effects.

I know people who had very bad side effects from taking mounjaro.

If you look at the mounjaro forum on mumsnet, a lot of posters talk about getting bad side effects from mounjaro

Don’t you have to take it all the time though?

Can you visit the GP and they will just prescribe it for you? I know someone who said that her 23 year old daughter just got it prescribed for her and the practitioner lied and said her BMI was higher than it was so that she could get it?

None of my friends mind taking it regularly. I think the rules have been tightened recently, but the girls I know are all on rolling prescriptions that just needed a photo of them looking overweight to be written (which one of my friends openly admits she edited to make herself look larger)

LucasBuck · 22/07/2025 22:22

YANBU as long as it’s not affecting your health or what you can do. Aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder and it would be boring if we all looked the same imo. You do you.

Personally I did feel terrible mentally and physically when I was obese (actually what was called morbidly obese in the old days) but I’ve been just “overweight” for years now and well … I don’t actually feel much better physically so really I doubt my weight had much to do with it (hereditary health issues that thinner family members have too), my toddler DS “loves (my) squidgy tummy and boobies” especially sleeping on them 🤣, and I can still enjoy a big bar of Cadburys if I need to at that time of the month, as I’ve got no kind of ideal figure to worry about or diet to wreck.

I do sometimes wish I was a stone lighter - especially in the summer months when I’m sweating like anything as I’ve never been good with heat (skin type 1 - can’t tan). But to lose enough weight to get into the “healthy” BMI range ie. from 27/28 to 24, I have to cut out all sugars and virtually all carbs from my diet because it’s just not my natural body type (and I have to go into keto to get there) . It’s miserable to do and just not sustainable in the long term imo. Just cutting back on treats/junk food most of the time (the sustainable method) means I only lose a few pounds and then that’s it - but at least it’s liveable.

MocktailMe · 22/07/2025 22:22

I used to be anorexic and clinically underweight and now I'm overweight.

I used to be freezing cold, felt tired ALL THE TIME. I didn't get my period back until a BMI of 22.5. I've been seven stone lighter than I am today when I was at my sickest. Wasn't sure i'd see 30.

By BMI I should be around 2 stone lighter and I think I probably look 'better' at that weight (by some standards). But I definitely look a lot better now than I did seven stone ago! I've been there. I've been ALL the weights. This one feels good. I eat well, I'm active, I'm a size 14/16 (I'm also 5'9). I'm also post surgery/pregnancy which caused some weight gain - I'm around a stone higher than usual.

I'll lose this stone without trying now that I'm more active and healed and then I'll be just fine.

Honestly, if you eat well and stay active you'll settle into a size that is where you'll stay happily. Life is TOO SHORT to worry about being thin. You can be happy and overweight - I'm living proof.

There are very strict criteria to be prescribed Mounjaro (tirzepatide) on the NHS for weight management. To be eligible, individuals generally need a BMI of 40 or more, or 37.5 or more for individuals from certain ethnic minority groups, and must also have at least four out of five specified weight-related health conditions. These conditions include Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease (cardiovascular disease), abnormal blood fats (dyslipidemia), and obstructive sleep apnea. The longest period you can currently be prescribed it on the NHS is two years.

DollydaydreamTheThird · 22/07/2025 22:24

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 21:30

Mounjaro/ wegovy isnt a magic cure.

I know people that took it. They just had terrible side effects and didnt lose any weight.

More than half my friends are on it and they are all absolutely ecstatic with the weight loss they've had with no major side effects other than the obvious lack of appetite. I totally get it's not for everyone though. I used to be fat and I wouldn't have taken it personally. I think there will be a lot of people needing gall bladder surgery in the next few years as well as rapid weight loss causes gall bladder issues for some people. I do worry about my friends but at the end of the day everyone has to do what they feel is right for them. Just like you are doing flump

WestSussexWitch · 22/07/2025 22:24

YANBU op, I’m 5,3 and a year ago I weighed 10,4. I had lovely full boobs and a big round bum, I’m under 9 stone now and feel like I’ve been deflated. I was much happier and confident with my old body.

Mydogiscuter · 22/07/2025 22:26

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 18:05

I feel great!

I have a fat friend and he said that he feels fat and happy

I know that society frowns on being "overweight" but we are all shapes and sizes.

64% of adults in the UK are overweight or obese. Society should frown on it - it costs us a fortune in public services. Not only the direct costs of treatment for weight related health conditions but also the indirect costs associated with time off work etc due to this.

I am not overweight but my weight varies and I sometimes hover just around the upper level of a healthy BMI. It has a huge impact on my mental and physical wellbeing. I feel generally shit about myself but actually it seems to have a significant interplay withy hormones. The heavier I am, the worse my symptoms of PMS. My joints ache more, my sleep is impacted and my immune response to allergies is greater.

stinkycatbum · 22/07/2025 22:26

sometimes I think shape matters more. I’ve seem slightly chubby people who have a lovely shape and clothes look fabulous on them compared to some thinner people who are thin but dont necessarily have a great shape. I think a person’s shape makes a lot of difference, regardless of weight.

Most of my friends pay for it privately. Yes you have to stay on it or inevitably you'll put weight on if you haven't changed your lifestyle. You can get it on the NHS but there are criteria. Have a Google. I think at the moment the criteria is very strict in terms of BMI and medical comorbidities like diabetes/hypertension etc otherwise they would have to fund half the country taking it.

Princessfluffy · 22/07/2025 22:29

Size 16 is very normal for the UK.
It is also enough to raise your risk for a fair few health conditions unfortunately.

LessOfThis · 22/07/2025 22:30

everythingsnotmadeofgold · 22/07/2025 19:07

Because it makes a huge difference. If someone is 5 foot 9 and a size 16 and someone is 5 foot 2 and a size 16.

Well sure but it’s still none of your business how tall I am! I’m fit and healthy and you’ll just have to take my word for it instead of judging 🤷🏻‍♀️

TipsyFairyHicHicHic · 22/07/2025 22:30

Life is TOO SHORT to worry about being thin. You can be happy and overweight - I'm living proof.

Being overweight to the point of being obese shortens your life.

Please stop these comments that people can be obese and happy.
Being obese is a time bomb.

Sooner or later obesity leads to diabetes, amputations, cancer, heart disease and hip replacements.

The NHS is staggering under the pressure from the epidemic of obesity.

People are not advocating being 'thin' (we're now into Thin Shaming) but being a sensible weight and not heading into life threatening disease that's bankrupting the NHS.

PersephonePomegranate · 22/07/2025 22:32

FFS, OP has already explained why she feels like she should diet, but she clearly doesn't enjoy it and feels liberated by accepting herself as she is. What's so terrible about that?

Nobody should be made to feel miserable or less than becasue of a number on a scale and nobody should base their self esteem on it either - you never know what's around the corner and what medications might fuck your metabolism up.

Be happy and enjoy your summer, OP. I'd think about maintaining your current weight, or only losing to the top end of your healthy BMI if you still wish to in September, don't make yourself miserable!

So, if you don't mind me asking, why did you lose weight? 10st 4lbs at 5' 3" gives you a BMI of 25.5 - only just into the overweight range. I'm half an inch taller than you and 10.4 is my ideal weight (in that I look and feel great) and at 9.5 stone I looked gaunt so I can understand why you'd be unhappy at 9st.

ASimpleLampoon · 22/07/2025 22:34

I spent 20 years on various diets always miserable. Menopause h as hit, I've gone from pear shape to Apple shape. I found it so hard to shift even a few pounds.

Decided to just enjoy life now. That was two years ago no regrets.

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 18:43

I would hate to be as angry as you! Imagine getting that angry!

Do you have anger issues. You can get therapy for that.

@everythingsnotmadeofgold are you always so vile?

Pistachiocake · 22/07/2025 22:41

Lots of people look younger when they are not slim (not everyone, but most of the people over 30 I know/see around would fit into this category). The old saying about you have to choose between your face and your figure (some choose botox etc, which is their choice, but even allowing for that, most people do seem to look younger. Not that this should influence what they do, and it's totally their choice, but OP, I think a lot of people actually agree with you! Feeling able to eat what you like/not following a diet might make you happier too, maybe.
A health secretary also said it's better for your health to carry a bit of extra weight as you get older, would have to google her name. Anyway, your body, your choice.

blubberball · 22/07/2025 22:42

I'm fat and I decided to be happy about it. It was fine for a while, but now I have type 2 diabetes and it's not fun. I've lost 30lbs so far, but still need to lose another 41lbs. Health is so important, and I really struggle to lose weight

Spaglasagneaise · 22/07/2025 22:43

IShouldNotCoco · 22/07/2025 21:54

Not really. Why is it shallow to not enjoy being overweight? It doesn’t suit me. As has been said, some people carry weight much better than others.

Your choice of wording, especially the part about how you are good looking and would be invisible if you gain weight.
