Do you think Jack would of survived if Rose got on the life boat (the second time)

Watched Titanic last night and it got me wondering if Rose got on the life boat, do you think Jack odds of survival was better without Rose?
do you think she held him back a little as he is a resourceful guy, I think he would of found a way to get on a boat.
this was after she rescued him from being handcuffed to the pipe of course.

Also If they both did survive, do you think they would of stayed together?

I still think there was room for 2 but yeah if she’d have got on the boat he’d have had the door to himself

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 20/07/2025 13:28

There would have been room on the floating debris so maybe. Selfish Rose hogged it.

ButtSurgery · 20/07/2025 13:30

We had the same conversation last night. That was two spaces on boats she wasted. Jack was resourceful enough to get himself onto another boat.

If she'd just gone with her mum on the first boat, I think both would have survived.

Lorddenning1 · 20/07/2025 13:31

@ButtSurgeryshe had to get off the boat the first time though, as right after this she rescued Jack from the pipe he was handcuffed too, but then the next boat she jumped off.

I watched a documentary about whether they would have survived on the door together and James Cameron was there testing it all out and they proved jack and rose wouldn't have survived on the door together
However I reckon they would have both survived had she got on the boat but she may have ended up back in the clutches on whats his face

But there was a lot of floating debris around so I’m sure he could have found something else. The reason Jack couldn’t fit on was because they were both trying to get onto the same thing from the same side

I know that story-wise, Jack had to die. But I’ve always felt it was a mistake by the props department that literally the ENTIRE world all said the same thing - that they could both fit on. The fact that 25 years later, there’s still debate lends to that as well.

james Cameron is so salty about it whenever it comes up. It’s hilarious.

Dragonflea28 · 20/07/2025 14:01

I think with the air and water temperatures, Jacks death was inevitable. Long before that scene with the door, he had spent time in freezing water handcuffed in the hold of the boat. I doubt he would have survived even the initial plunge into the ice cold water even without that lead up. Most people died from the shock of hitting the cold water rather than drowning.

OtherS · 20/07/2025 14:01

I just feel so sorry for her husband and the father of her children, who was probably assuming she'd be meeting up with him in heaven rather than the one-night-stand she had when she was a teenager. Poor guy. What an awkward way to spend eternity.

MintTwirl · 20/07/2025 14:08

I agree OP, if she had stayed on the second boat he would have found a way onto another boat or something,

Also kind of how I felt about Miguel in This Is Us! Rough deal for the not-loves-of-their-life.

Heatherjayne1972 · 20/07/2025 14:36

they could both have survived but Jack would never have made her happy - she loved the comfortable life too much to go roughing it with a homeless boy.
Rose lived her whole life without ever telling her mother she survived - selfish
Her poor mother. Not only that but she kept that diamond necklace all those years only to throw it into the sea a- jack didn’t give her the necklace so it wasn’t sentimental. She could have sold it and given the money to her mother
also her poor husband who presumably she was married to for a long time was second best to a two day fling

Rose is the villain here.

( I may have overthought this a bit)

Rose wasn't married was she? Been a long time since I watched it but I thought her mother wanted them to get married as he was rich and could save them from poverty.
But yeah Rose should have just got on one of the boats

agree - how hard would it have been to have just got a smaller door?

The film would have gone through a lot of test audiences first - I read somewhere that they cut a scene showing the death of the little girl Jack danced with because audiences found it too upsetting - so I refuse to believe they didn't get the 'they could both fit on the door' feedback. OTOH that would be an expensive scene to reshoot.

Realistically though, they both probably would have died. There would have been a lot of floating debris around in real life too, but only about 6 people were rescued once the ship had sunk - whether you were actually in the water or not, once you'd got wet it was just too cold to survive for more than a few minutes. The survivor testimonies talking about how they could hear the screams for help slowly fading out are chilling.

Never mind the lifeboat situation. To me the final straw was when she dropped that valuable diamond into the ocean! Silly woman 😡

She married some years after the Titanic and then had children.
Wasn't she the grandmother of one of the (modern day) boat crew?

Pedallleur · 20/07/2025 14:54

No. Most of the men died. Once in the water he most likely would have frozen to death. If she hadn't have gone back for him he would have died in handcuffs

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 20/07/2025 14:55

Yes but his character was an abusive bastard 😬

Well yes, but Billy Zane.

I could have changed him. (Not really but he was on my laminated list so maybe.)

I always have this moral dilemma with certain films, that the villain is way more attractive than the hero 😄I mean, Leo looks like Rose’s son or little brother.

ginasevern · 20/07/2025 15:53

I've often wondered why Rose didn't visit Chippewa Falls and inform Jack's family of his death. He wouldn't have been registered as a passenger on the Titanic so they would never have known what happened to him. But she did seem pretty selfish tbh.

I always thought she dropped it there so Lovett would have easily found it with his crew.
@Needmorelego her granddaughter is her carer played by Suzy Amis.

MeringueOutang · 20/07/2025 16:01

The thing that always pushed believability for me was that her mum was clearly also rescued and they were on the same boat (Carpathia?), how did Rose not just accidentally bump into her at any point before they reached New York?
