Do you think Jack would of survived if Rose got on the life boat (the second time)

Watched Titanic last night and it got me wondering if Rose got on the life boat, do you think Jack odds of survival was better without Rose?
do you think she held him back a little as he is a resourceful guy, I think he would of found a way to get on a boat.
this was after she rescued him from being handcuffed to the pipe of course.

Also If they both did survive, do you think they would of stayed together?

@BrickBiscuiti know I could kick myself now, oh well too late now I suppose

I watched last night too and I was quite surprised by how the sinking looked a
bit rubbish compared to how I recall it when I first saw the film. I get it’s 20+ years old now but it just looked like it what it was, a studio, and a special effect. That aside, still enjoyed the film.

No I totally agree with you. She would’ve been bored and fed up within two days. What would they have done together? She’d have been an outcast in society too really wouldn’t she…not like her mum and dad would’ve had ol’ Jack round for dinner or a trip to the theatre is it?

Although from what I remember she had a pretty unimpressively average house as an old lady didn’t she? So was she supposed to have married an average non wealthy man - you know to show she learned from Jack and didn’t go back to the fancy life?

and yes, I always felt sorry for her husband. and the daughter was such a twit with no loyalty to her late father, encouraging her mother’s reminiscing crap.

Hadn’t thought about her mother! And the poor researcher who listened to her waffling on for hours only for her to get rid of that tacky necklace in the sea! She could’ve done a bunch of good with that or at least let him have it - must’ve cost him a lot of sacrifice to get that research trip together, even if he was a bit slimes.

omg I’ve overthought this too

I don’t think the class issue would have been such a problem. Although Rose was higher class, she wasn’t in the same league as Cal and she was bored and unhappy in that circle of people. That’s why she fell for Jack, he showed her another way of life.

I know everyone moans about the ending - her meeting him in heaven and what about her dh and father of her kids - but I always took that to mean that Jack was the one she would have been with if he hadn’t died. She went on and lived her life for him as she said she would and when they reunite in the afterlife it’s with happiness because she fulfilled her promise to him.

I still don’t fully understand why she threw the necklace in the ocean at the end. Maybe she thought it would cause more trouble and greed? Never did grasp that one.

RiverGod · 20/07/2025 23:24

I’ve said it before and I’ll say again, why didn’t he break some of the doors off, lash them together to make a raft and put life jackets under for buoyancy? Then float out to the life boats.

I reckon they’d have lasted though, Rose had an adventurer’s spirit!

YankSplaining · 20/07/2025 23:35

Jack’s priority was Rose’s survival and well-being, so I don’t think he would have focused on saving himself unless he knew she was entirely out of danger. As for whether they would have stayed together - no idea, but if they’d broken up, I think they would have stayed friends.

Lorddenning1 · 20/07/2025 23:35

@bridgetsbum she threw it in the ocean so the guy from the Britney Spears video could go down and get it for her.

I've often wondered why Rose didn't visit Chippewa Falls and inform Jack's family of his death. He wouldn't have been registered as a passenger on the Titanic so they would never have known what happened to him. But she did seem pretty selfish tbh.

He was orphaned when he was fifteen, and we never hear about any siblings or other relatives.

Ha I forgot about that song. Memory unlocked.

Just been down a rabbit hole of theories about the necklace. Lots of people saying it was for closure and to let go of the past and embrace a new life which doesn’t seem right given that she dies that very night.

Imuptoolate · 20/07/2025 23:47

I always thought she dropped the necklace into the water because she didn’t want anyone to find it, as it was her secret between her and Jack that she didn’t want revealed.

Presumably they weren’t going back down to the Titanic to look for it again and if she had died with it still in her possession then someone would have found it when sorting through her belongings.

powershowerforanhour · 20/07/2025 23:52

Rose had a full length wool coat and a life jacket on for insulation and was still barely able to whistle for help. Jack was in shirt sleeves, no life jacket. Granted women have a greater SA:volume ratio than men (and Kate Winslet is shorter than Leo) and lose heat faster despite their body fat content....but the clothing would have outweighed that. He would have passed out and died of hypothermia, even on the door.

Agree. I still think A Night to Remember is a better film, despite being black and white and having cost a fraction of what was spent on Titanic.

Ah, OK. I obviously wasn't paying attention when he said that bit!

There was a thread here a whole back about how young Rose's mother was. It didn't occur to her to remarry into a wealthy family although she was only in her 40s. It was a funny thread about random titanic trivia from what I recall.

But brutally, she wasn’t much of a ‘catch’ on the contemporary marital scene. No money, as presumably her husband/Rose’s father left little or no money to settle on his widow and daughter, and, as divorce was both still very difficult and considered socially impossible, she’d probably have been looking for an older widower who, if he were rich, could have married a younger woman, especially if he wanted more children. Marrying Rose off was a more sensible financial option, until Rose screws it all up.

Look at Edith Wharton’s The Hoise of Mirth, set only a few years earlier. Lily Bart, who has grown up in riches but is orphaned and impoverished at 20, is on the shelf and increasingly desperate to marry at 29.

I quite like the film but I’ve never been able to get over the dreadful casting of Kate Winslet as a 17 year old. Utterly ridiculous. No chemistry between her and Leo (who I love in everything). A total mismatch which spoils it all

Kate Winslet was 21 when it was filmed - not really very different to being 17.

FanMeNowPatrick · 21/07/2025 16:50

Have you seen a deleted scene where she is seen holding the necklace over the water and they try to talk her out of dropping it? Feast your eyes

James Cameron also said the script said Jack dies, so Jack always dies no matter what size the door was etc.

I don’t think she was miscast at all but just not such a great love match with Leo. They pull it off though because the whole film is great. I would say that it’s more like Leo who was miscast? ..but I know that millions of fans would stone me to death for saying this.

there's no definitive number of those survivors who has been in the sea. There's certainly some dispute about a few of the stories from people who claimed to have been in the water

AntiquePenguin · 21/07/2025 19:05

they could both have survived but Jack would never have made her happy - she loved the comfortable life too much to go roughing it with a homeless boy.
Rose lived her whole life without ever telling her mother she survived - selfish
Her poor mother. Not only that but she kept that diamond necklace all those years only to throw it into the sea a- jack didn’t give her the necklace so it wasn’t sentimental. She could have sold it and given the money to her mother
also her poor husband who presumably she was married to for a long time was second best to a two day fling

Rose is the villain here.

( I may have overthought this a bit)

Rose couldn't have sold the diamond necklace legitimately because it was a rare, one-off piece. She revealed that Cal had received an insurance payout for its loss - if it had gone to auction, the insurers would have been all over it and Rose's cover as 'Rose Dawson' would've been blown.

She could possibly have sold it (for a fraction of its value) to someone unscrupulous to be broken up and sold on

Would HAVE survived
(or would’ve)

Edited

I came here to say this too.

waaaaaah · 21/07/2025 20:17

@AntiquePenguinI’d never considered that and always wondered why she didn’t sell it for her adventures!

Also being pedantic, apparently It’s not a door she’s on, it’s a panel from a doorframe and Jack could not have survived according to Mythbusters.

Vitrolinsanity · 21/07/2025 20:20

If I’d been Jack I would have turfed her whinging winginess off the fecking door.
