Friend should have told me her toilet seat was broken?

A bit of an unusual one - I visited my friends house yesterday for a coffee and a catch up which we arranged a week or so ago. After an half an hour or so I said I would pop to use the loo and she casually told me ‘oh - the toilet seat broke the other day so there isn’t one on there’.

As a slightly larger lady, ‘hovering’ as she suggested isn’t exactly straight forward.

Do you think she should have told me about this ahead of time?

Don't be ridiculous, why didn't you put the seat up and sit on the toilet why do you have to hover? What's your size got to do with it?

There was no seat! That’s my point. They are in the process of replacing it this weekend.

So sit on the bowl?

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 19/07/2025 09:22

You can still sit on the rim!

Too late now of course but this is a complete non-event IMO.

AllPlayedOut · 19/07/2025 09:23

There are a disproportionate number of bizarre threads on Mumsnet that involve discussing toilets and various aspects of going to the toilet in detail. This is one of them.

Berlinlover · 19/07/2025 09:23

Hover? Why didn’t you just sit on the bowl?

popcornpower2025 · 19/07/2025 09:24

Ridiculous

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 19/07/2025 09:24

I think you are being a bit precious unless you are about to drip feed you have a disability you failed to mention.

LaMarschallin · 19/07/2025 09:24

I've never posted "The first post nails it" before but it does.
She did tell you when it was appropriate and I don't understand the hovering thing.

I agree. It's a race to the bottom.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 19/07/2025 09:25

Ridiculous

R0ckandHardPlace · 19/07/2025 09:25

My toilet seat is broken. I must alert everyone I know just in case they may pop round and be ever so slightly mildly inconvenienced.

Ridiculous.

Thepeopleversuswork · 19/07/2025 09:26

Good grief how ridiculous. No wonder people are worried about resilience... unless you are disabled this is a non event.

Nopenott0day · 19/07/2025 09:26

I don't understand why you can't hover?

babasaclover · 19/07/2025 09:27

if you’re too heavy and unfit to hover for 10 seconds I think you should be seriously worried about your health.

most normal people can do this so why on earth would your friend pre warn you? Caveat of course for disability but you mention being too large as the reason. She probably didn’t even see it as an issue as she herself and her family are fit enough to hover 🤷‍♀️

333FionaG · 19/07/2025 09:29

Is this a thinly disguised urolagnic posting?

saraclara · 19/07/2025 09:29

It wouldn't occur to me to tell visitors in advance that my toilet seat was broken. Presumably it was fine the week before when you planned the visit. It wouldn't occur to me than anyone planning to visit me would want the option of cancelling over this.

ChangeOfNameAujourdhui · 19/07/2025 09:29

Absolutely she should have told you, verbally and then following up in writing. I would be ending the friendship over this - there’s no way back. possibly taking out a full page advert in the press so others are alerted to her lack of consideration.

good luck in the future- I hope you can find new friends with fully intact toilet seats and you never have to face this again. You deserve better.

I would say so. Those posts appear, with alarming regularity, on MN.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/07/2025 09:31

What in the Mumsnet Saturday Morning Purgatory is going on here? You've got a three card trick of age, obesity and toilets already,

whynotmereally · 19/07/2025 09:31

Then you sit on the bowl. Obviously it’s less comfortable but no different in termed of cleanliness.

MasterBeth · 19/07/2025 09:32

Message for the OP in case she ever comes round:

  1. En suite shower pressure can drop if someone runs a tap in the kitchen
  2. Door to the spare room sticks so you need to lean on it to close it properly.
  3. HD channels on the TV go a bit blocky if a plane flies over.

With a full health and safety risk assessment posted on the toilet wall too. :)

cheesycheesy · 19/07/2025 09:34

Do you think she should have warned you before you went round? How weird

StMarie4me · 19/07/2025 09:35

No.
If you can’t hover you need to learn. Ew. What do you do in public toilets?!
Im 62, 200lbs with fibromyalgia and can hover with ease!

AnimalLover24 · 19/07/2025 09:36

I’m clearly in the minority but I wouldn’t expect a friend to sit on the ‘bowl’ of my broken toilet and if I only had one bathroom then I’d absolutely mention it if they had planned to come round.
