AIBU to agree with Diane Abbott

I cannot stand Diane Abbott, she has a lazy, patronising manner which riles me, but she has said that people visiblybof a different race (e.g. black people) experience a different sort of racism than those who’s race is not visually obvious (travellers, Jewish people etc). She has a point, doesn’t she? Am I missing something here?

Obviously all types of racism are utterly abhorrent.

Because it says that in many different news articles and gov reports?

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65174096

It literally doesn't if you read that report. It says quite clearly: British Pakistani men. Because several of the victims were Asian but not Pakistani. They weren't only white girls.

I'm not Jewish, I have a Jewish grandparent and many of his family died in the Holocaust. My son converted when he was 20.

He experienced 4 hate crimes in 18 months, including being spaton by school kids, and he's had to stop wearing his kippah for his personal safety.

He can't mention that he's Jewish a lot of the time, as its likely he'll face hate in public settings.

For example we were eating in a Tunisian restaurant and he'd had some chicken, the waitress was trying to give him baclava which he couldn't eat because he keeps kosher. She kept pushing and pushinso and he was too scared to say he was kosher in a busy restaurant, so the poor boy had to put it in his mouth and then spit it out when she wasn't looking.

He's had Jewish friends physically attacked at uni. When he complained to the student union about antisemitic enails they were sending out, he was invited to leave the student union. There's many courses that are a complete no-go for him.

The ignorance here is unbelievable.

He can't mention that he's Jewish

But isn’t that the point she is making? That she cannot just not mention she is black?

There will, of course, be Jewish people who cannot hide that they are Jewish and that was Abbott’s mistake. And she must know this from her own work against antisemitism.

It’s absolutely horrific what your son has gone through. He should not be treated this way for his religion and he should not have to hide it. I just don’t understand why people do this to each other. It is unthinkable to me.

Orders76 · 18/07/2025 00:38

I've been with a family member who was assumed a certain white culture/ race by a white foreigner because of hair colour and being a young person wearing a shirt ( formal) for a meal out, all this in the person's home country - racism exists on multiple planes.

Maybe because they were South Asian? Just a thought.

Would you like to try thinking again?

Thinking about what - changing their ethnicity?

“The Telford abusers were men of "southern Asian heritage", according to anindependent inquiry, external carried out into the case. ”

Rotheram is more tricky as the line is ‘mostly Pakistani heritage’ with no idea on the other perps.

Also, you’re being highly pedantic when it’s obvious who the perps are but I’ll play along with your ‘gotcha racist’ moment. Why not?

The point she's making is inherently racist. People shouldn't need to hide their identify out of fear. She wouldn't suggest Muslims took off their hijabs. Do you have any idea how upset my young son is about this???

I'd ask Diane to send her own kids and grandkids out at the weekend in her constituency and tell me how they don't experience racism the same way. My mother is brown and she's never once felt afraid to be outside because of her colour.

The point of this thread is really just to downplay antisemitism, which is exactly what Diane was trying to do.

More concerned about description of the rapists. Sick thread, all round.i see the OP never returned.

i absolutely agree with you - your son (anyone) shouldn’t have to hide their identity and his experiences that you have described are just horrific.

Oshio · 18/07/2025 00:57

Oh yes and, my son is emigrating as soon as he finishes university because Britain is not a safe place to be Jewish, nor is it a place Jewish people can trust in the authorities or anyone else to sort the problem. Partly because of idiots like Diane who think their experience is the only one that counts.

It’s not about being more concerned about the identity of rapists. I am concerned that innocent people will be vilified because of the colour of their skin - being lumped into a group of “South Asian grooming gangs”.
We saw the effects of this after 9/11 with my Muslim and non-Muslim Asian friends.
Words are important.

Words certainly are important. All minorities can be subjected to bigotry - no bigotry is more important than others - that's the point. Repeat, rinse, repeat.

Willyoujustbequiet · 18/07/2025 01:37

soddingspiderseason · 17/07/2025 14:25

I don’t think there should be a hierarchy of racism. In terms of history, the Jewish community has experienced racism for thousands of years - the colour of their skin is irrelevant. I really don’t like this type of comparison, and it feels intrinsically wrong.

This. In fact implying there is some sort of hierarchy could be construed as racist in and of itself.

Yabu OP.

The woman is an idiot to not have learnt from the last time.

Frummie · 18/07/2025 02:18

Haven't read the whole thread, but isn't it concerning that she seems totally oblivious to the biggest European community of orthodox Jews - ie visibly Jewish people - which is in her constituency.

He ate the chicken but not the baklava because he keeps kosher? How does that work?

If it contains dairy it cannot be eaten after a meat course. But really, why would you express incredulity at this? If someone, for any reason at all, expresses that they cannot eat something, why wouldn't you just take their word for it?

Walkden · 18/07/2025 03:47

"So yes, let’s condemn all prejudice. But pretending all forms of racism are equal flattens context and erases impact."

In UK law, all forms of racism are illegal not minimised as prejudice.

For instance is overt racism by an English international player on the playing field acceptable as long as it's not aimed at a black person? Or is it merely lower impact and not to be treated as seriously as a result?

My incredulity was that someone who keeps kosher ate chicken at a Tunisian restaurant. How was that chicken kosher?

Beanee · 18/07/2025 05:48

Livelovebehappy · 17/07/2025 23:34

I stand by what I said. Abbot was almost annoyed that Jewish people were claiming racism, as if only Black people were allowed to feel that way. Ironically by trying to stand up to racism against one group of people, she was then minimising another group of people’s experiences. The antisemitism she has displayed previously was there, just beneath the surface….

You stand by what you said?

You may think there is no hierarchy of racism, but your deleted comment is the most racist comment on this thread. And says something telling about you and the poster who agreed with you. Disgusting.

DdraigGoch · 18/07/2025 06:48

DiscoBob · 17/07/2025 20:59

Well yes, they exist. I'm not sure what your point is though.

I'd also argue an orthodox Jew by default would wear at least some clothing relating to their faith. Else how could one identify them as orthodox?

My point was that differences may be more apparent than Abbot gives credit for

You can find it as disgusting as you want; I've found plenty to be disgusted about. Reducing racism, especially when it comes to rape, is right up there. White saviours, signalling their virtue, really do not get to guilt trip me.
