I’m 39, turning 40 at the end of the year.

My husband thinks I’m being ridiculous with what I spend, but we can afford it comfortably and it makes me feel good.

I spend £42 every 3-5 weeks on nails, and every 3 months or so an extra £15 to get my eyebrows waxed and tinted.

i spend £140 every two months on getting my hair extensions moved up, and then every 4 months an extra £77 to get my roots done.

he thinks this is silly money and an extra £110 a month we could be saving, but I work, it’s my only real splurge each month and it makes me feel great. Am I spending too much? How much do you spend?

If you can afford it then it’s fine.
i don’t have nails, brows, waxing anything like that (i used to have regular Hollywood waxes but haven’t done since my regular lady closed down during the lockdowns).
Hair is 70 ish every 8 weeks or so and every third trip is £120 for some highlights (my hairdresser does then in a way that my roots don’t show).
My big spends are clothes - I think nothing of spending £150 on a dress or £400 on boots. A far cry from our early days when i didn’t buy clothes from one year to the next and when I did it was charity shops and jumble sales!

ZZGirl · 17/07/2025 19:43

Nails - £35 every month
Eyebrows- £5 every month to 6 weeks
Hair - £40 every 2/3 months. More if I get it coloured

Sh291 · 17/07/2025 19:44

I only get my hair cut and blow dried every 4-6 months which costs £40.

why does he want you to stop taking care of yourself is the bigger question.

Where would this savings be going ?

I’ve been an associate in a law firm for about two and a half years now. No job progression and the work environment has got worse and worse to the point that I’m leaving to work in the public sector, completely unrelated to law and hoping to work my way up there. I’ll post in relationships now.

I didn’t intend for you to answer, sorry if I confused you. I was trying to highlight the ridiculousness of his stance. You have a real job….

ALJT · 17/07/2025 20:12

Lashes £25 every 2 weeks and nails £30 every 3-5 weeks. Hair £40 every 2 months or so (my friend does it who’s a hairdresser)

Tubequeen · 17/07/2025 20:15

Curly hair girl here 👋 £215 every 12 weeks for hair cut and colour (Midlands). YES. Surprisingly, I don't have any of the other stuff but I would if I could afford it 😂

bettydavieseyes · 17/07/2025 20:17

None. I don't like nails and don't use nail varnish except maybe toes in summer, I cut my own hair and pluck my eyebrows occasionally and that's it. I don't do any other of the stuff either like eating out loads or anything leisure wise that costs money regularly. I like to live frugally. I think £100 a month on beauty is a lot but I would say that in comparison! The only things which cost that sort of money or more in my budget reguarly are bills and food. I tend to spoil people on birthdays and take my kids on holidays but I guess everyone does that!

KP93 · 17/07/2025 20:18

He sounds like a ‘see you next Tuesday’ in truth.

Serious question, do you think he’d ‘fancy’ you if you stopped with the beauty stuff?

Part of me things he wants you to stop so you’re not as appealing to other people. The control over finances and not paying for after school clubs etc is really poor behaviour

Tryingtobedifferent · 17/07/2025 20:18

About £35 on a hair cut every 18 months or so lol I paint my own nails and shape my own brows. I'm very low maintenance when it comes to beauty

LittlleMy · 17/07/2025 20:20

Make way ladies…52 and £17 every 4m for a dry trim. I believe I can self declare myself as the lowest maintenance?! 😁

Luckily my brows have a defined high arch shaped already so easy to pluck around, for face I use one of those little pens you swipe around, my hair is very fine and thin so colour and highlights are a waste, I touch up my own roots every few weeks. I have very white nail tips so I just put a clear varnish on them and it looks like a natural sort of French manicure.

Just as well, my beauty costs are minimal because I have a mortgaged/car and usual bills etc that I need to pay for as a single person and must admit I find even paying the £17 plus tip to hairdresser annoying 😅

NewMrsF · 17/07/2025 20:20

Nails £25 every 2 weeks
lash lift £40 every 6 weeks
Micro needling £100 every 6 months
polynucleotide injections £50 every 3 months

northernballer · 17/07/2025 20:21

I get my haircut every 8 weeks for £50.

Don't get my nails done, used to have LVL and a facial every 6 weeks but can't afford it now.

I do spend £150 per month in a PT which is more important to me than beauty treatments but you should be able to spend your money on what you like, assuming you both have the same freedom.

RoseAlone · 17/07/2025 20:21

I can't believe how much people spend. I spend £52 every 6 weeks for my hair, nothing else.

AlpacaMittens · 17/07/2025 20:22

Hair cut once a year, about £50 I think?
That's it 😬

RoseAlone · 17/07/2025 20:23

ChattyChai · 17/07/2025 13:53

Would you say the last lift is worth it? I’m really interested in getting one!

Don't be so ridiculous! Leave your lashes alone, listen to your husband. £110 per month on such nonsense is crazy!!

Wibblywobs · 17/07/2025 20:24

I don’t get my nails done. I paint them if im going to a wedding etc.
I wax my own brows and my haircut is £37 once every 6 months. I don’t dye it, i’m going grey disgracefully!
However, if that is something you enjoy, its your money to spend as you wish! Does your husband have any hobbies? What does he spend his money on? I don’t think just over £100 a month on self care is bad when it can be comfortably afforded.

I may match littllemy for low maintenance. I am 51. 2 haircuts per year at local salon. £16 quid each.
It's your money do what you want. I spend mine on expensive waterproofs and hiking.boots to climb up mountains.
Whatever is important to you

Teaandscone · 17/07/2025 20:24

My mum trims my hair ever six weeds or so, free of charge. I colour it every three weeks and use one and a half packs of colour so about £11.00. I do my nails myself.

Its1971Again · 17/07/2025 20:24

If you can afford it and it brings you pleasure, then that's fine.

When I was working, I used to spend about £140 every 3 or 4 months getting my hair cut and having highlights put in. However, since I retired about 5 years ago I've been cutting my own hair (started in lockdown and never stopped) and I've always looked after my own nails and eyebrows. So my current expenditure on these things is a big fat zero!

sunflower85 · 17/07/2025 20:27

Nothing wrong with that, I spend 40 on my nails and 90 for a T-bar of foils - everything has got so expensive nowadays, but the alternative is to not have my nails done which, if I had to I’d do without, but I’d never go back to my natural hair colour, it’s mouse brown/ dirty fair and no thanks.

LostVagueness25 · 17/07/2025 20:28

I get my hair highlighted around every 8 months, just to blend the grey, so with that and a cut it’s £100. And then a cut in between highlights usually, which is £40.

And a lash lift every 6 weeks, which is £40 a time.

That’s it.

NancyJoan · 17/07/2025 20:29

£30 nails, every 3 weeks
£80 hair every 5
£50 wax every 8
£180 Botox every 6 months
£250 filler once a year
In summer, occasional spray tan for £25
£280 microblading brows every 2 years ish

Cel77 · 17/07/2025 20:32

Haircut maybe once a year. About £60. I need one now but can't really justify the expense. Instead, I spend a bit longer straightening at home (3 minutes).
I'd like to treat myself to nice highlights to hide my increasingly prominent and noticeable grays.

That's it. Never really saw the point of having nails done as I'm happy with just a bit of nail varnish I put on myself to make myself feel brighter.

I'm glad I've not fallen in this endless trap that beauty treatments seem to be, when I could be spending money on stuff I really enjoy.

MomsGotInk · 17/07/2025 20:34

Hair-£40 roots/toner a month (my hairdresser is mobile & she’s been doing my hair about 6 years,I provide the bleach)
nails-£23 every 3 weeks
eyebrows-just waxed-£5 every 3 weeks
tattoos-£60-£100 a year (had to limit this cuz it’s my most expensive treat-my tattooist has been my friend for 20+ years so I get mates rates)
