I’m 39, turning 40 at the end of the year.

My husband thinks I’m being ridiculous with what I spend, but we can afford it comfortably and it makes me feel good.

I spend £42 every 3-5 weeks on nails, and every 3 months or so an extra £15 to get my eyebrows waxed and tinted.

i spend £140 every two months on getting my hair extensions moved up, and then every 4 months an extra £77 to get my roots done.

he thinks this is silly money and an extra £110 a month we could be saving, but I work, it’s my only real splurge each month and it makes me feel great. Am I spending too much? How much do you spend?

OP posts:
camshaft · 17/07/2025 20:37

Eyelashes every 3 weeks £30
hair probably 5 times a year at £100 a pop
massage once a month £30-£50 depending on what I have
Botox 3 times a year at £180 each go
Mounjaro maintenance £140 a month

i do my own nails and eyebrows (have a fringe to hide them haha)

I don’t think I’m high maintenance but now I’ve written it down maybe I am!!!

I don’t care. Like you; I can afford it and it makes me feel good about myself.

Floundering66 · 17/07/2025 20:38

Eyebrows threaded once or twice a month (£5 per time)
Pedicure every 6 weeks from May-Sept (£33 per time)
Highlights and a cut 3/4 times are year (£100 for half head, £140 for full - I alternate each time)
Between work and looking after a 1 year old I don’t really get the time to fit in anymore than this!

21ZIGGY · 17/07/2025 20:39

Yeh what you spend on beauty treatments is not your issue...

flirtybird · 17/07/2025 20:39

Every 4 weeks I pay

£45 haircut
£75 leg and bikini wax
£17 eyebrows tint and wax

I work and choose to look after myself.

My husband is a hobby pilot and owns a microlight aircraft, he chooses to spend his money flying as often as he can.

DipsyDee · 17/07/2025 20:41

If you can afford it and it makes you feel good go for it, My treat is highlights /root touch up every 6 weeks and I do not feel guilty about it at all!

edit for typos

I’ll just cut from other areas, I might draw out of my premium bonds that I inherited from my grandmother. He says I owe him for the years that I didn’t work - a period of 5 years when we had a lot going on. I went back to work “proper” in 2015, when our youngest was 2. He thinks I owe him for that time

I clicked on this thread out of curiosity about nail prices - but this post makese think "what in the actual fuck?".

You are his married partner and mother to his children in a family that joins you all together as a unit. Families require money, but they also require time, effort & support. Maybe he has made a greater financial contribution this far, but you have made the greater time/effort/support contribution that, as PP have rightly pointed out, facilitated him earning more & advancing in his career.

Where would he be if he'd been doing 50% of drop offs, pick ups and sick days?

I am HORRIFIED that childcare comes out of your spends when they are JOINT CHILDREN.

IMHO when both partners are working, all household/family expenses should come out of a joint pot that is fed, ideally, in proportion to each partner's income. I.e. if he earns 90k to your 30k, he pays 75% to your 25%.

Be careful of the pensions too, because you have practically none & he is already talking like you "owe" him money for the audacity you showed in RAISING HIS CHILDREN. I doubt he'll share fairly and you may be living in financial penury while he laughs it up with his mates in the club bar.

I really think you need to read up on financial abuse. Good luck. Xx

Every 3 weeks - Nails £25

Every 4 weeks - hair can vary between £50-80 depending on if it’s roots and a trim or some highlights too. I get a very minimum of the roots done 4 weekly.

once a month/bi monthly - threading £14-£25 depending on what I get done. If I can stretch to every other month I just pluck myself.

I also tan (myself) every other day and wear a full face of makeup daily so do buy a lot of tan and makeup. I also take good care of my skin and have a lot of skin care but try to make use of the boots £10 Tuesday to stock up on products to keep costs down there.

so what is he going to contibute extra to the savings?

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 17/07/2025 20:43

I am 36 and spend £55 every 3-4 weeks on lashes and brows and £80 every 8 weeks on getting my hair cut and highlighted.

I can’t have nails done in my profession but get a pedicure every 3-4 months which is £40.

Clearinguptheclutter · 17/07/2025 20:45

Nails almost never. Facial and/or pedicure maybe once a year.
brows £12 every two months or so
hair £40 every two months or so
box dye hair myself every two months or so

I’m pretty low maintenance I think. BUT I spend a similar amount to what you spend on beauty, on a hobby. I don’t think what you are spending is unreasonable at all but it depends on what other outgoings there are

Pretty much identical to you

TimSamandLulu · 17/07/2025 20:46

Haircut £20 once a year
£0 on the rest

Millennialpause · 17/07/2025 20:47

I can’t remember how much my home kits were, but anything I do I DIY these days. If I had the money and time I would definitely go to the professionals though.

Pogpog21 · 17/07/2025 20:47

£120 for hair extensions moved up and colour every 6 weeks
£20 for nails every 3 weeks
£260 on Botox twice a year

NoSoupForU · 17/07/2025 20:48

Nails are £30 every 2 weeks
Lash lift £35 every 6-8 weeks
Hair is every 6 weeks £80
Eyebrow wax £15 every 2 weeks
Pedicure £35 every couple of months
Facial £60 every couple of months

Leapintothelightning · 17/07/2025 20:48

I don’t get my nails done, but if I ever stop biting them I might start! Maybe should start anyway and that would stop the biting…

I pay £75 total every 5-6 weeks on hair (cut and colour), brows (wax and tint) and facial waxing (chin and tache!)

£50 a month on skincare and makeup.
£50 every month on a massage

CherryAlmondLattice · 17/07/2025 20:48

I have long and incredibly thick natural Afro hair and a disability that means I can’t really do anything with it myself.

My DH has no clue what I spend on it 😂

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 17/07/2025 20:49

What you’re describing isn’t excessive, so if you can afford it and it makes you happy, why not? Plus you are probably supporting small female run businesses, so there’s that.

180 on cut, colour and a conditioning treatment 4 times a year (not bad for london)

60 quid on a conditioning treatment in between times - x3 a year (I suffer badly from frizz)

say 3 pedicures a year - 3O quid each

Brows threaded - 8 quid every 4 to 6 weeks

I am currently spending about 500 quid a year on some permanent hair removal and have been for a couple of years - but it’s hormone related so I’d put it under medical.

FortheloveofCheesus · 17/07/2025 20:52

About £60-70 for a hair cut probably 3 times a year. Thats it.

I am happy with how i look naturally, i don't really like the heavily made up/nails/brows/lip filler look.

Bowies · 17/07/2025 20:53

Hair cut £60 every 8-12 weeks

Waxing £30 every 8-12 weeks (less in winter)

i don’t the other things you mentioned regularly, nails might be once a year as a treat, but more likely to choose a massage.

Fuzzymuddle33 · 17/07/2025 20:54

I used to have hourly massages every 6 weeks but out financial situation changed.

never spent on nails

hair approx £70 every 3 months

nothing else but I do miss those messages. As soon as I can afford it again I’m back to those!

AInightingale · 17/07/2025 20:55

ACupFullOfCrazy · 17/07/2025 13:54

hair £12 every 6 weeks or so

thats it, I am very low maintenance😂

Where/how do you get your hair cut for twelve quid?! Thought that was a male privilege.

Anjo2011 · 17/07/2025 20:55

Hair every six weeks - £85
Podiatrist every six weeks -£35
Eyebrow and lip threading every four weeks -£25

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 17/07/2025 20:55

Nails £45 every 2 weeks (because I am terribly heavy handed) but I do go a salon that specialises in caring for your natural nails.
H D Brows every 6 to 8 weeks £40
Hair £0 mother is a hairdresser

I have had my eyeliner tattooed on… so there was a cost to that, but it lasts a huge amount of time and my face needled, which I would do again if I felt it was needed (boosts collagen).

I really want to start getting lash lift and tints regularly (only do them for holidays right now) and laser hair removal now.

and there was me thinking I was low maintenance 😂

Gwenhwyfar · 17/07/2025 20:57

Hair is very important for how you look, but I don't see the reason for getting eyebrows and nails done professionally. That money would probably be better spent on tweakments.
