I’m 39, turning 40 at the end of the year.

My husband thinks I’m being ridiculous with what I spend, but we can afford it comfortably and it makes me feel good.

I spend £42 every 3-5 weeks on nails, and every 3 months or so an extra £15 to get my eyebrows waxed and tinted.

i spend £140 every two months on getting my hair extensions moved up, and then every 4 months an extra £77 to get my roots done.

he thinks this is silly money and an extra £110 a month we could be saving, but I work, it’s my only real splurge each month and it makes me feel great. Am I spending too much? How much do you spend?

Also, who made your husband God of all?

As one of my grandparents used to say, it’s no good being the richest person in the graveyard!

LipstickLessons · 17/07/2025 14:08

I'm not into that kind of thing but don't ask me what I spend on art supplies and running paraphernalia. We all have our things don't we and so long as you can afford it your husband should keep shtum.

MayBeee · 17/07/2025 14:08

The only ' beauty treatment ' I get is my hair cut , I alternative between a cut & a cut /colour the following appointment . The timescale is probably 16 weeks or approx at no more than £90 so I'm a less than £25 a month gal .

Groundhedgehogday · 17/07/2025 14:09

£50 haircut 4 times a year
£40 massage once a month
And that's it...

I do spend a lot of month on exercise classes though.

perenniallymessy · 17/07/2025 14:10

£42 twice a year on a wash and cut (don't bother getting it blow dried as I tend to air dry it myself). I really dislike getting my nails done, so I sometimes get some gel nail wraps at about a tenner a set to do at home. Don't get my brows or lashes done and I've let myself go grey. Most of my hair and beauty products are supermarket type brands.

But I do get a sports massage every six weeks or so at £50 a go and my gym membership is about £125 a month and I make sure I have a nice long sauna there at least once a week.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/07/2025 14:11

I spend about £45 every six weeks on hair. I was spending £30 every six weeks on electrolysis on lip and chin hair but it’s worked and I’m done now. I had it for a full two years.

I’m also done with Botox because I have some sort of resistance to it

All that’s left is nails and I’m between nail salons at the moment but that’s about £30 round here so I don’t think any of it has been extortionate

ReignOfError · 17/07/2025 14:12

It’s all so subjective that what others spend is meaningless, but fwiw

£35 hair every eight weeks
£40 pedicure (not gels) monthly between June & October
£10 when I can be bothered on getting my lashes tinted
And I’m just about to start getting my eyebrows done, as my eyesight is so bad that even with a magnifying mirror I can’t see well enough to do my own any longer.

strawlight · 17/07/2025 14:13

No wonder I look ropey, clearly need to up my game (and my spending!)

popcornpower2025 · 17/07/2025 14:14

£60 for roots and £60 for haircut about every 4-6 months depending on how on it I am
£35 for leg and bikini wax usually before holidays
None of nails, none on eyebrows.

I do spend £60 every 6 weeks on a sports massage and have an expensive gym membership.

Mikart · 17/07/2025 14:16

Hair about £70 every 5 weeks
Gel nails £35 every 3 weeks
Facials £85 a month
Gym/trainer/pilates £130 a month
Occasional massages usually in the winter.
I have no body hair to remove...all lasered 20 years ago.
Eyebrows are hidden under fringe
I'm retired and its all my money!

Notsuchafattynow · 17/07/2025 14:16

Does he have no comparable personal spends?

I spend similar to you, and used to feel guilty but then totted up my DHs gym, contacts and private dental that I don't have and figured we're evens.

BrunchBarBandit · 17/07/2025 14:17

Nails £40 per month

1x every 2 months full roots, cut & blow £80
In between full roots I have my part topped up and fringe trim for £10
Half head highlights once per year £95

1x month eyebrow and upper lip wax £16

It’s worth every penny in my opinion

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/07/2025 14:17

Hair - £120 every 8 weeks. That's it, I won't invest in anything else!

stopringingme · 17/07/2025 14:18

Only get my hair done every 8 - 12 weeks, highlights, wash, cut and blow dry, it has just gone up to £49.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 17/07/2025 14:19

I probably spend about a tenner a month all in on beauty and maybe 15 quid on clothes from charity shops.

But it doesn't really matter what I spend because my husband would never query on what I spent affordable free money on.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 17/07/2025 14:20

I get my hair cut every 6 weeks, €34.00 + tip. I stopped having highlights during the pandemic and haven't started again because I cba sitting in a salon for hours.
Do my own nails so all they cost is a new bottle of polish every once in a while.

Catsandcannedbeans · 17/07/2025 14:20

DH pays for it as I’ve carried the children, the least he can do is pay for my nails and eyelashes. My nails are about £35 most of the time but for my birthday/Christmas they’re more as I get cute little designs on them. Lashes are £100 but I don’t get them done all the time, I take breaks because it’s better for your natural lashes. It’s more of a holiday treat or if I am going somewhere special. Nails and lashes are the only regular things though, I do my own eyebrows and my sister in law cuts/does my hair free in exchange for childcare.

This baby is my last baby, so once she is born I am going to look into a personal trainer and maybe loose skin removal (which I imagine will be expensive). I’m going to see how I feel on the lose skin removal though because I don’t love the idea of surgery, its a bit scary.

ilikeeggs · 17/07/2025 14:21

Hair £100 every 10ish weeks
Botox £150 every 9 months

That’s it as never had nails or anything else done.

AstronomyDomine · 17/07/2025 14:21

£96 every 4 weeks - BIAB nails infill and gel, full leg wax, bikini, lip and eyebrow wax
£83 every 8 weeks - cut and colour

My husband goes out EVERY Friday with his mates, spends way more than I do on his enjoyments. Let him try to tell me how spend my money!!

ChattyChai · 17/07/2025 14:25

Shoxfordian · 17/07/2025 14:03

My hair is about 120 every 6-8 weeks, nails about 60 a month.

Do you work op? Why does your husband think he can dictate what you do with your money?

I work and cover all of this with my “fun” money that I’d left after we’ve both paid into the joint account for rent, bills, savings etc

His golf club membership is about £200 a month but he says it’s different as it’s exercise and he “networks” for his job

Floofle · 17/07/2025 14:28

Well this is rather eye-opening!
I only get my hair cut about twice a year haha... at £15 a pop

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 17/07/2025 14:29

Hair, about £120 every 3 months. Nothing else really, I don't like nail varnish and my eyebrows just look after themselves.

Thepeopleversuswork · 17/07/2025 14:30

Hair is important to me: I spend about £120 roughly once every six weeks (highlights and a cut). Would spend more if I felt I needed it.

Nails: left to my own devices I probably wouldn't bother other than as a treat but my work more or less mandates me to have my nails done so I spend about £30 roughly once every three weeks on a manicure, pedicure roughly 3-4 times a year.

Eyebrows: when I can be bothered (roughly three times a year)

Never had anything done to my eyelashes.

Never had any kind of plastic surgery/botox/fillers.

I do like grooming and like to look as nice as I possibly can but I also don't want to become a slave to it and feel I have to do it at certain periods. Apart from everything else I don't want to spend a large portion of my free time in the beauty salon: there are more interesting ways to spend life.
