I’m 39, turning 40 at the end of the year.

My husband thinks I’m being ridiculous with what I spend, but we can afford it comfortably and it makes me feel good.

I spend £42 every 3-5 weeks on nails, and every 3 months or so an extra £15 to get my eyebrows waxed and tinted.

i spend £140 every two months on getting my hair extensions moved up, and then every 4 months an extra £77 to get my roots done.

he thinks this is silly money and an extra £110 a month we could be saving, but I work, it’s my only real splurge each month and it makes me feel great. Am I spending too much? How much do you spend?

OP posts:
klallen · 20/07/2025 21:00

£40 on nails every 3 weeks
£160 cut and colour every 6 weeks
£40 brow tint and lamination every 6 weeks
£250 botox every 3 months

I'll also give myself £50-£100 a month for refills of makeup, skincare, hair products etc.

I think what you pay is actually quite reasonable for the services you have.

Additionally, I don't think a man has any right to be judging whether such costs are justified when male 'beauty standards' are virtually non-existent relative to what we, as women, are force-fed by the media from pretty much the second we are conscious and breathing.

HOWEVER, I withdraw all of the above if you are struggling financially. Beauty services are a luxury, not essential. When I was on mat leave I gave everything up with the exception of my hair - but downgraded to a lower maintenance colour and switched my apts to every 3-4 months.

If, though, it's affordable to you, he can swivel lol!

Londonrach1 · 20/07/2025 21:01

£O on anything. Which reminds me I must get a haircut. Trouble is the price has gone up from £15...I get a wet cut. I have my hair cut twice a year but it's been a year since I had it cut. No idea why anyone have brows or nails done. I'm Abit older than you. You are spreading an awful lot. However if you covering bills etc that's your choice.

GymBergerac · 20/07/2025 21:09

Zero. DH cuts my hair with the clippers (started during Covid and absolutely nailed it, I loved it so he's done it ever since) I don't spend anything on nails, makeup or clothing (I mean I buy clothes obviously, but just the essentials!) Can't afford it these days, but even when we could have I wasn't interested.
It's not a humble brag or any form of judgement, it's just how I am, I think whatever makes YOU happy it's absolutely fine, as long as it's an expense you can comfortably afford, and you aren't doing without anything more important to have those things.
It would be a different matter if you didn't put aside any savings and had those things, but if you're happy you're putting "enough" into your savings that the £110 a month isn't an issue, then go for it, and enjoy looking after yourself!

WigglywagglyWanda · 20/07/2025 21:09

30 on nails every 3 weeks and matching toes at 10 when we go on holiday

0 on hair removal, I shave everything

10 every month on box hair colour. I cut my own hair as I've never been happy when getting it done

45 on skin care, cleanser moisturiser hair shampoo and products maybe every 6 weeks

200 twice a year for botox and once for fillers

Waitingfordoggo · 20/07/2025 21:13

I don’t get involved with much grooming. I get my hair done twice a year- one visit will be around £150 and the other about £70. I buy deodorant, moisturiser, shampoo and conditioner (I don’t need much of the latter as I wash my hair once a week). I don’t do nails, waxing, eyebrows or lashes and I don’t wear make up. No treatments such as facials.

I am currently having my teeth whitened at a cost of £550 which feels frivolous and vain and I’m embarrassed about it, but I think it is one small thing that will make me feel better about my appearance and help me to smile more!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 20/07/2025 21:14

Hair is approx £50 every 5- 6 weeks (colour, trim, blow dry by mobile hairdresser)
Nails - around £5 for a jar of nail varnish to paint my toe nails in the summer
Hair removal - mixture of shaving and veet
Eyebrows - in desparate need of waxing.

Marosanne · 20/07/2025 22:48

I think if it's your money and it makes you feel good he should mind his own business!

HevMc007 · 20/07/2025 22:55

Box dye every few months, haircut couple of times a year, no nails or lashes, shave my own bits, have a very minimal skincare routine and husband gives me massages ;)
I do like nice make up though, although I try and get the pricier prices at Christmas/birthday.
So I guess all in I prob spend like about £400 a year maybe?

ThatWarmTurtle · 20/07/2025 22:58

Nails £40 max every 4 weeks, BIAB with nail art (French, flowers & mixed colours or plain)
Hair £95 every 6 months. Highlights but not overly fussed on getting it done when it grows out

BeNiceorBeQuiet · 20/07/2025 23:16

I think I spend about £100 per month, it will go up when I need to start dyeing my hair but I might do that myself 🤔 I'm 54 its haircut every 5-6 weeks at £30, brow threading same about a tenner, and botox every 3 months for now.

EmptyWaterBottleReusable · 20/07/2025 23:27

Zero

Spend money on hobbies & holidays instead

RM2013 · 20/07/2025 23:27

Work in healthcare so no nails or lashes. Will
occasionally get pedicure/gel nails as a treat when I have time off work
hair trimmed and roots done every 2 (ish months) £70
do my own eyebrows
i would definitely have more treatments if I had the spare money. Would love to get a massage/facial every now and then. If you can afford it I think it’s nice to treat yourself

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 21/07/2025 02:22

£20 for my hair cutting 3 to 4 times a year. She’s not great but I spent £40 on a cut for my wedding which didn’t look much better and I had to listen to her whinging about how badly my hair had been cut previously.

used to have my nails done a couple of times a year (gel polish) which cost about £25 a time but no longer bother. Also used to get my lip threaded for £6.50 monthly but I moved house and no one does threading round here so I home wax instead.

PeloMom · 21/07/2025 03:16
  • eyebrow threading every 2 weeks, 3 max (they grow very fast)
  • nails- every 3 weeks
  • pedicure-every 6-8 weeks
  • hair - balayage - every 8-10 weeks with every other visit a cut as well (as I said my hair grows super fast)
  • facial lasers and treatments - 3 times a year. Throughout the year full on morning and evening skincare routine.
no point of providing prices as in a different country
Brightyellowspyrograph · 21/07/2025 06:55

Hair cut every 6weeks appx £30 box dye £7 every couple of weeks as my hair grows quickly. No one is getting near my horrible feet. Erm that's it.
Obviously letting the side down.

Bjorkdidit · 21/07/2025 07:04

RTFT people!

Why are people still wittering on about nails and haircuts when it's not about that.

The OP is being financially abused by her DH, who spends far more on his own hobby and has dismissed the value of her raising their four DC while he's been free to pursue his career unhindered by his domestic responsibilities.

EmotionallyWeird · 21/07/2025 07:10

I cut my own hair for a long time but have recently started going to a hairdresser again - I think it was about £38. That's for a cut, I've never had extensions. To be honest I don't think she's done a much better job than I do, and if I'm not happy with the next cut I'll be trying someone else. I don't think I've ever spent money on nails other than about £1-£10 for nail varnish - nowadays I usually get it in TKMaxx for about £4.

Firstshoes · 21/07/2025 07:18

Hair £80 every 8 weeks for root highlights, cut and blow dry. Nails £30 every 3 weeks. Myself and DH allocate ourselves the same amount of 'pocket money' each week and my hair and nails come from this so it's not affecting family finances in any way and I don't feel guilty.

LoopyLoo1991 · 20/07/2025 20:36

To quote Shakespeare 'Vanity thy name is woman'. I probably spend £80 a year on haircuts and £50-£70 on makeup total. Been given vouchers for Boots as presents which I've put to good use from my company.
None my family are very into beauty stuff, barring my eldest half-sister who slaps it on for occasional night out.
And it all gets washed off or out in the end. No wonder men get frustrated sometimes. So long as we smell nice, I doubt a majority of guys would care if we're fully tarted up or completely fresh faced! lol

@LoopyLoo1991

i don’t care what men think. I wear make up , get my hair done etc for me, not for men.

Cherrytree86 · 21/07/2025 12:25

Widower2014 · 20/07/2025 20:55

And if your husband spent the same amount on stuff??

Or worse, he lost his job but the savings have gone on your nails and hair???

@Widower2014

by that way of thinking, no one would ever spend money on anything not essential ‘just in case…’

…which is a bit of a miserable way to live.

Didimum · 21/07/2025 12:49

I get my haircut every 6 months – about £50. I have really dark brows and eyelashes so nothing there. Hate waxing so don't do that, I just shave and trim. So that's it.

I spent plenty elsewhere though!

Yeh me too.

I like doing it, I like the way I look when I've done it and I actually couldn't give a fiddlers fuck whether "men get frustrated" or not.😄

Poor men eh

Well we'd best hope you don't get stuck in financial dire straits and be forced to give up your makeup and beauty treatments then. Like that stupid, stupid woman on Jeremey Kyle who was spending 30% of family income on make-up etc but wasn't paying the rent. Her kids weren't happy about having to eat basic meals either and her own mother telling her no amount of make-up would make her less self obsessed.

You couldn't sound more condescending if you tried.

There you are virtue signalling that you spent your Boots vouchers on 'sensible' things, that "men get frustrated" bloody Nora these days we don't live our lives for men.

Folk spend their hard earned cash on all sorts of things, cars, paintings, designer clothes, jewellery...... if they want to spend some of it on titivating themselves up because they like it then that's their choice.

Jesus .... you can rest easy my four children got their lunch money every day in spite of my liking for a bit of good grooming, and were properly fed watered and cared for, as i earned enough to do everything comfortably....y'know now relying on "men" for self worth.

Good. I hope I made my point .
