I’m 39, turning 40 at the end of the year.

My husband thinks I’m being ridiculous with what I spend, but we can afford it comfortably and it makes me feel good.

I spend £42 every 3-5 weeks on nails, and every 3 months or so an extra £15 to get my eyebrows waxed and tinted.

i spend £140 every two months on getting my hair extensions moved up, and then every 4 months an extra £77 to get my roots done.

he thinks this is silly money and an extra £110 a month we could be saving, but I work, it’s my only real splurge each month and it makes me feel great. Am I spending too much? How much do you spend?

I do my own nails and shave my legs in the shower but I do like to use nice products so probably spend £50 a month on nice makeup, nail polish, shower stuff, etc.

Hair £120 every 3 months. It used to be half that but I get a gloss colour now.

No botox or anything like that.

What a c*nt. LTB.

Clearly doesn't value your contribution to the family in the early years facilitating his career. I won't even mention the boiler, childcare costs and his childish huffy trot to the pub, tell him to fuck off and take him to the cleaners 🤗.

whynotwhatknot · 17/07/2025 21:14

this is the least of your problem

golf comes out of joint account because of so called networking-and you have to pay for childcare

hes financial.ly abusing you

Totally agree. Tosser.

Farmwifefarmlife · 17/07/2025 21:32

ChattyChai · 17/07/2025 15:29

My career only really started when our youngest son turned 2. I also have expenses I pay each month (after school clubs etc) that he doesn’t want coming out of the joint account. He says they’re my responsibility as they essentially provide wrap around childcare so I can work full time.

And I presume so he can work too!!?? This is definitely a joint expense! I’d be annoyed at that. Sounds like he’s looking after himself.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 17/07/2025 21:32

Zero other than a haircut once a year at the most. However I spend £110 on other things each month, such as books. Everyone has their interests and hobbies.

He’s taking the piss. Golf membership out of the joint account but not childcare and after school? I don’t understand that, why doesn’t childcare come out of the joint account?

Flatulence · 17/07/2025 21:32

Nails: £35 to £40ish every 3 weeks
Pedi: £60 every 6 weeks
Leg, bikini and underarm wax: £75 every 5 weeks.
Colour: Averages at £50 every 4 weeks (I'm grey and my hair grows very quickly).
Cut: £85ish every 12 weeks or so
Botox: £190 every 12 weeks

I then have ad hoc treatments like massage, facials, hair up for events, as and when the spirit moves me. And then things like teeth whitening every few years.

It's a lot, but I can afford it and I enjoy it. I earn well, I have no debt other than my mortgage, no car finance, I don't go on expensive holidays, I rarely drink etc. I just like to look and feel my best - the same reason why I go to the gym, use a personal trainer and try to eat healthily. I'm hugely grateful that I can do all of the above; it hasn't always been the case.

Tl;dr: Your money, your choice. If you can financially meet all your needs and commitments then use your own money however you like. It's no one else's business.

Haribosweets · 17/07/2025 21:34

£0 I have natural nails, natural brows, natural eye lashes etc. My hair is cut about properly every 2 years and about £20 at local hair dresser (dry cut) and occasionally my MIL will trim the ends once every 9 months or so. This is me though. I don't even wear makeup unless its a proper event and then its a bit of concealer and bit of mascara.

Timetocheersme · 17/07/2025 21:34

I dye my own eyebrows, and use a brow mascara to thicken them - so £20 a year?

Hair - it's natural silver now and I trim it myself.

Skincare - £70 a year on a couple of beauty advent calendars that last all year + aloe vera gel and sun lotion

My nails are fine natural, occasionally put some polish on them that I've had for years

I'm very low maintenance. My money goes on gym/swim annual membership of £300

I've got good skin and use products, but I'm 50 and it won't last forever. Not judging others for spending, if I had more I would.

TheOGCCL · 17/07/2025 21:35

I don't think that sounds unreasonable at all. You could be spending way more. It would be different if you didn't have the spare cash. And tbh its better than spending on fast fashion.

Rosalind1971 · 17/07/2025 21:37

Is it your money ? Do you work ? If so wtf has it got to do with anyone . I have nails done , pedicure , eyebrows, vampire facial - I live for £10 Tuesday every week on the boots app ❤️, I work fucking hard I pay my bills so I will do what I want with my money. I work as a cook in a care home , I love the residents but I will tell you all this you all live your lives because you never know what’s around the corner

LJ125 · 17/07/2025 21:37

I don’t think your costs sound unreasonable at all. By comparison, I spend around:

£40 every 3 weeks on nails
£20 every 4-6 weeks on brow tint and wax
£125 a month on glass skin facials
£60 twice a year on pedicures
£80 twice a year on hair cuts
£250 once a year on Botox
and ungodly amount on home beauty, skincare, makeup etc

But context is key and the reasonableness of expenditure entirely depends on your income and other outgoings.

TheGrimSmile · 17/07/2025 21:38

I don't really spend anything other than a haircut about twice a year. But I have other vices: weekends away, stuff for the house and garden; we all have our weak spots for spending.

LovingLimePeer · 17/07/2025 21:41

£19 once or twice a year for my hair unless I can get my husband to cut it, in which case hair/nails/beauty treatment cost is £0.

Praying4Peace · 17/07/2025 21:42

YourWinter · 17/07/2025 14:03

I’m 69 and had my nails done for the first time ever in June for DD’s wedding, I love them. They were re-done after four weeks (BIAB), probably three would be better if anyone but me was going to see them. It’s £34 and despite my extremely low pension income I’ll carry on until the novelty wears off as they delight me every time I look at them! Long term I won’t be able to justify it.

I have longish hair twisted up in a claw clip or ponytail and just lop bits of fringe off myself if it annoys me. Never had brows or lashes done and I don’t really like being touched, so facials and massages are a no-go.

Edited

Enjoy your nails, you deserve to!

autumn1610 · 17/07/2025 21:42

£45 as it’s just gone up again for nails which I’m gutted about as I like having nail art but i think it would be about £50 + to get what I was having so I’m going back to plain - I go every 4-5 weeks

hair colour twice a year about £150 a go and probably cut 3 times a year £60

wax every 6 weeks - £30-40

eyebrows tint and shape myself now but tend to get a reshape once or twice a year £15 for me to then follow the regrowth

botox one area twice a year £120

nextholidaypending · 17/07/2025 21:45

Im a bit tight but like to have these things done. I have a uv nail lamp and do my own nails, and I do my own lash lift and tint with a luxe kit. Cost a fraction of having someone else do it but with a bit of practice is just as good 😊

Thepossibility · 17/07/2025 21:48

I cut and dye my own hair. I do my own nails and lash lift. All so I can spend the $ on Dysport (like Botox) approx twice a year.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 17/07/2025 21:48

£30-40 on nails each month, £75 on a cut and colour every 8 weeks or so. I love my nails which make me smile every time I look at them, and for the first time in my life I have great hair. It’s worth every penny to me, even though I’m not a high earner.

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/07/2025 21:50

Quick heads up to anyone new to the thread

This is NOT about nails.....its about at best a very selfish husband and at worse, financial abuse.

MerryPeachPoet · 17/07/2025 21:52

Nails £35 every 3 weeks, £35 lashes every 3 weeks & extension refit £50 every 8-12 weeks! Luckily I do my brow tinting/waxing myself so I save there lol!

MayaPinion · 17/07/2025 21:57

Blimey, I didn’t realise nails were such a big deal. I don’t think I’ve ever spontaneously noticed anyone else’s. I just keep mine clean and neatly trimmed. Do you notice other people’s nails?

EveryDayisFriday · 17/07/2025 21:59

OK this isn't about the cost of beauty treatments, it's about you being financially controlled.

Childcare and all child related expenses are joint expenses. You should both have the same spending money to enjoy every month on yourselves, the rest of the money should be joint income, outgoings and savings.

PollyBell · 17/07/2025 21:59

A hair cut once a year or so I dont need to look 'good' i am happy just being whatever I am

But if you earn the money you can spend it

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/07/2025 22:02

What does he spend his fun money on?
Booze? Golf? Fishing equipment? Snazzy car?
