I’m 39, turning 40 at the end of the year.

My husband thinks I’m being ridiculous with what I spend, but we can afford it comfortably and it makes me feel good.

I spend £42 every 3-5 weeks on nails, and every 3 months or so an extra £15 to get my eyebrows waxed and tinted.

i spend £140 every two months on getting my hair extensions moved up, and then every 4 months an extra £77 to get my roots done.

he thinks this is silly money and an extra £110 a month we could be saving, but I work, it’s my only real splurge each month and it makes me feel great. Am I spending too much? How much do you spend?

OP posts:
GreenShimmers · 17/07/2025 20:58

Zero, I cut my own hair and only paint my toenails, so I'm not much help!

RosesAndHellebores · 17/07/2025 20:58

Hair about £180 every 6/7 weeks
Make up and skincare, about £75pcm
Perfume - don't ask

I work full time. DH has no idea and couldn't give a flying although in covid when I couldn't get my roots done, he suggested letting it grow out wasn't a good idea.

I'm 65. I'm worth it. If DH didn't think I was worth it, he could find a better place to lay his head. X

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/07/2025 20:58

Currently getting my toenails lasered at £100 a session because I’ve got fungus. Hair £50 three times a year. I do my own fingernails. The couple of times I had a professional manicure it was £15. Nothing else.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 17/07/2025 20:58

@ChattyChai having read all your updates your husband sounds like an appalling sexist selfish pig.

You have equally supported the family - him by earning more, you by raising the kids and earning what you could alongside.

Start taking the childcare out of the joint pot immediately, and work on equal access to what is family money - it’s not his it’s both of yours.

No you won’t both be able to live of one pension. You should not be drawing on savings to live when your joint income is perfectly adequate. As well as taking your fair share of the family money right now, start building your career and your own money asap, because he really sounds like the sort of man who will start shagging the barmaid at the golf club at some point and ditch you with not a lot.

657904I · 17/07/2025 20:58

My nails are £40 (BIAB & colour on top) - I try to stretch it out to every 5/6 weeks to save a bit of money

Toenails - £35 every 2 months

Hair colour/extensions/blowdry - £200-300 every 2 months depending on what I get done

That’s pretty much everything. I used to get lash lifts & brow lamination every 8 weeks for £75. I haven’t had that in a while cause I need to find a new salon.

Don’t know if I have missed something, but personally I find hair/nail costs to be a reasonable expense. I don’t go to the cheapest salons or get the cheapest services, I’m paying for the best of the best in my area and am happy with the results.

TheChosenTwo · 17/07/2025 21:03

Hardly ever go to the hairdressers, not because of cost but because it’s 3 hours and my lovely hairdresser is often hard to pin down so I just sort of give up 😂
I do have a monthly massage and have just started going for a pedicure just before it - total cost of £110 a month. Also spend around £200 a month in space NK on various beauty/skincare/shampoo sorts of things.
get my eyebrows waxed before a holiday, about £15 as and when.

My money, not dhs business. Could cut back on all of it if I needed to but I don’t want to!

also spend a similar amount to the above on gym membership, reformer Pilates classes and swimming. Would be more reliant to cut down on any of this though as I do see it as an investment in my physical and mental health. So good for my wellbeing.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/07/2025 20:57

Hair is very important for how you look, but I don't see the reason for getting eyebrows and nails done professionally. That money would probably be better spent on tweakments.

if I don’t get my eyebrows ‘done’, I end up with one, which stretches all the way across my browline. I don’t need ‘tweakments’; I need two eyebrows which preferably have a discernible shape.

To answer the original question, I spend:
£100 every 8 weeks or so on a hair cut and colour
£35 on bikini and underarm wax every 6 weeks
£5 on eyebrow threading every 4-6 weeks.

I am also considering adding my chin and neck to my waxing routine as I spend an inordinate amount of time managing the very dark, coarse hairs which pop up. Given how the rest of my body hair is (very dark, abundant) I suspect it’s just going to get worse as I age.

I do bleach my own tache, dye my own eyebrows and paint my own nails, as they’re all quite easy to manage at home (and my nails grow really well naturally so I don’t need acrylics or similar). When I’m feeling particularly organised I sometimes go for a lash lift and tint which I think is money very well spent, but for some reason I’m rubbish at making sure I get it booked in regularly.

Veryvulture · 17/07/2025 21:08

I’m 41, not much.
I do my own hair, nails, eyebrows and shave.
so apart from buying makeup, nail varnish, and razors etc , I spend nothing.

Bowies · 17/07/2025 21:10

No no no, this isn’t good regarding his attitude or outburst tho OP.

Golf shouldn’t be coming out of the joint account as it’s not a joint expense, his justifications for that are a nonsense and ‘gaslighting’.

As a PP said, the joint account should be proportionate to earnings.

You do both paid work and have brought up 4 DC. How much money did he ‘save’ when he flounced off to the pub?!

ArtfulTaupeGoose · 17/07/2025 21:11

Haircut and highlights £95 every 6 weeks
Brow tint and wax every 3 weeks £18
Massage every 4 weeks £ 40

Unicornsandprincesses · 17/07/2025 21:12

I turn 40 next week. I don’t spend anything, no hair, no nails, no brows. Nothing. I don’t know that’s a good thing. I got my first hair cut in about 2 years yesterday, 2 years before that I just asked somebody to hack it all off quickly so I could keep tying it up.

i think maybe I’d like to start treating myself a bit more but I feel it’s not “me” and I don’t do that sort of thing.

Eeehbaheck · 17/07/2025 21:12

theunbreakablecleopatrajones

would you mind telling me what conditioning treatment you use a few times a year please. I have unruly frizzy hair .thanks !

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 17/07/2025 21:13

Hair is £55 every 8 weeks for roots and foils
Eyebrow threading £10 every 4 weeks
So pretty low maintenance beauty wise

However my PT is £140 every 4 weeks - I will never give this up!

CanOfMangoTango · 17/07/2025 21:14

There's an embarrassing divide between people who have straight away dived into the thread with their expenditures on beauty and those who have read the OP's subsequent posts....

whynotwhatknot · 17/07/2025 21:14

this is the least of your problem

golf comes out of joint account because of so called networking-and you have to pay for childcare

hes financial.ly abusing you

ShiftySquirrel · 17/07/2025 21:14

I don't earn much so most beauty treatments are a luxury I don't prioritise. I'm pretty good at DIY though.

I bought a gel nail kit, plus some nice gel polishes for about £40 total. I've two teen girls so that's an immediate saving!

I also do DIY hair removal and use an IPL machine which has been really good. It was expensive to buy but works well for me. (Dark hair-pale skin so I've the ideal combo here).
Haircut twice a year £80 total, no colour.
Make up/skincare probably averages about a £10 a month.

Ooh what IPL machine do you use? I’d like one but I’m really struggling to decide which one/how much to spend!

Gowlett · 17/07/2025 21:17

£50 every six months on my hair.

Don’t get anything else done.

Need to get my teeth cleaned.

I spend on cosmetics & shampoo.

I also like a nice treat in the Sales.

DH wouldn’t know what I spend.

Coffeislife · 17/07/2025 21:18

£0 😭 but if we are going away I get my nails done professionally. Most people I know are £100 - £200 so I think you're on the lower end ;)

It's a Phillips Lumea, a good few years old now. So long as your hair is dark and your skin is pale it should work.

Booklover78 · 17/07/2025 21:21

London prices mean £120 a every other month for cut and colour. £65 for nails but I only get nails April to September.

JuniperJuly · 17/07/2025 21:22

Nothing much to add. 🤣

Previously:
Nails - about £35 every 3 weeks
Eyebrows - £15 every month
Eyelash - £15 every month
Hair cut - £45 sporadically
Hair colour - £100ish even more sporadically

I can't really afford it (and didnt particularly like the process) so now:
Nails - do my own. They last about 2 weeks. About £100 for the kit.
Eyebrows - do my own. About £12 for a box of dye that lasts about 10 times plus the cist of tweezers
Eyelashes - I dont do anything now
Hair cut - I need to make more of an effort with this.
Hair dye - £10 box dye. Looks exactly the same as an all over colour at the hairdressers and when I inevitably hate it, I can't blame them.

ClearFruit · 17/07/2025 21:23

My closest friend is a beautician so some is 'mates rates'.

Nails £30 every 3 weeks.
Eyebrows waxed and tinted once a month £15
Hollywood bikini wax every 3 weeks or so £20.
Highlights and a trim and blow dry every 3 months £50

MargolyesofBeelzebub · 17/07/2025 21:23

About £40 every three years on a haircut 😂 but I'm not into fashion or beauty so it doesn't bring me joy - and I actually dread getting my haircut and only go when the ends are extra straggly (like now 😬)

If I had time and less expenses, then I would spend money on massages fairly regularly though!

Verbena17 · 17/07/2025 21:24

£0 on anything other than 2x hair cuts a year which is £36 each time for a quick trim & rough dry.
£6 on a tub of Nivea soft twice a year for face and hands.
Splurge slightly more on shower gel & shampoo (l’occitane £16 per bottle).

That’s literally it.
