Raynor Winn/Sally Walker's statement Raynor Winn

New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting.

To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Please do not engage with possible visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail.

We have done amazingly well together - in the main that is, not mentioning any names but you know who you are! - for seven threads so far. I can't be on the threads as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion ticking along in a healthy and civil fashion is very welcome.

No saltiness. Keep to the path. Thank you.

No victim here. Merely a list to show how opposing views are dealt with on this thread.

Your bad. And as I said before, not a good look for mumsnet.

Well, it read like you feel hard done by and you've previously insinuated bullying behaviour so it was quite an easy mistake to make.

AlertCat · 20/07/2025 08:37

Just looked at the observer and there’s nothing new on this issue that I could see.

If there is anything today it'll likely appear on the website later to try to boost print sales...unless you've got a hard copy and know there's nothing?

FurryHappyKittens · 20/07/2025 08:49

Maybe whatever it is wasn't ready and the didn't want to put out half a piece.

Chloe H did say that there was digging going on, but it must be difficult to investigate to order.

The Bill Cole piece was different because it was a conversation with him that just needed writing up with a bit of narrative.

Stravaig · 20/07/2025 08:51

I'd forgotten that walking to the newsagent for the print version is a possibility! Apparently I've become a digital person - see also tapping on a paper book to bring up the clock, or using the pinch zoom gesture on my arm to magnify a freckle.

😂. If you've ever done a day of video editing you'll know of the disappointment when "undo" doesn't work in real life.

Catwith69lives · 19/07/2025 17:58

I've watched a large number of her video interviews about TSP since the Observer article broke. They all follow a near identical pattern. Zero deviation from the 'official narrative'. A bit like the R4 comedy slot 'Just a minute'.

On the other hand some interviewers have described SW as funny and down to earth, outside of the interview.

I get the sense that as the author of TSP, she is trying to control the narrative. If the narrative is 100% based on facts, then I don't see why that is necessary....

PS - yet to hear back from my friend who works as a body language expert for the French police in criminal cases.

Edited

Her body language is bizarre , she's shaking her head while she's recalling the walk ( which indicates she's lying) and she really lights up and acts normally when asked about the book she's reading which presumably is the truth.

FlyAgaricc · 20/07/2025 09:08

In The Salt Path Controversy: Behind the Scenes YouTube video, from Friday, Chloe is asked what is next and says:

30.29 "I am digging in various avenues, I'm not ready to share yet what I'm looking at but I can tell you, I think there will be more to this story."

She also says this near the beginning, when asked how she found out about the story:

9.29 "I can't really say at this moment because I had a tip off from somebody who's not decided to come forward yet. When and if this person does then that's up to them but this often works this way as a journalist you get somebody contacting you saying maybe you should look into this and I have to say I wondered if this person had an axe to grind. These are very successful people Raynor and Moth Winn. There are lots of reasons why people might want to take them down so you always sort of treat something like this with a lot of suspicion but what they did give me which was really helpful right at the beginning was the real names of Raynor and Moth because those names aren't in the public. Sally and Tim Walker."

Wonder who that was??

Simon Armitage was on Loose Ends tonight.
Unbelievably, when Stuart Maconie asked him if he was thinking of writing a cosy crime thriller, he said he was '…thinking of writing a book about walking the South West Coast Path.' !!!! Everyone laughed. I screamed!

I should have said, if you want to hear this on catch-up at BBC Sounds, he says it during the final few minutes of the show.

DisappointedReader · 20/07/2025 10:10

Famous last words and all that, but this has turned out to be a much quieter Sunday morning log in than feared anticipated!

One of the good things to come out of this whole sorry saga is that, after six years already as Poet Laureate, more people will now know who Simon Armitage is...and what he looks like!

I wonder if the Afghan leak story has bumped the Salt Path update Chloe told us to expect? There are pages devoted to that so other stories must have been given less or no coverage to make space.

Yeah that's a big story, so as it's week three, and probably another minor update, it got chopped.

I wonder if it'll appear. Or if Chloe H will continue digging and a slightly different story ends up being printed down the line.

Yes, I think that is possible and entirely understandable.

I very much doubt TSP story is going away, but I would expect the Afghanistan and also the Trump/Epstein stories to take precedence.

If there is going to be another story, I would always want it to be robustly fact checked. So I would have felt disappointed only if something had been rushed out or felt like a filler story

I wonder if the Afghan leak story has bumped the Salt Path update Chloe told us to expect? There are pages devoted to that so other stories must have been given less or no coverage to make space.

Let’s consider the many potential reasons why there’s no story today:

  1. There’s nothing to report
  2. The editor pulled the story because it was flimsy / badly written / libellous
  3. The editor pulled the story to make space for other news
  4. The Observer has been advised by RW’s legal rep that real mental harm has been done and that continuing with the story could result in a mental health breakdown or suicide
  5. Getting hold of a story is taking time and hence publication is delayed.

Point 4 is unlikely based on the journalist’s encouragement for interested parties to read the paper on Sunday.

Re: point 3 (making way for other news) this is unlikely. The paper is on a roll and breaking the news cycle in this way doesn’t make sense.

Bauds1 · 20/07/2025 10:43

Sorry to interrupt, but looking at the Observer online (I’m in NZ so might be an international version?) under ‘the Salt Path Controversy’ podcast, it mentions a live news meeting on the 29th July. Does that suggest anything to anyone?
I am loving these threads, reminds me of Mumsnet of old (clever, articulate, funny, and actually reading and responding to the other posts)

Yes I am a little bit. 😁

Like almost everyone else I am very interested in reading what else The Observer, Chloe H and the team have discovered about TSP industry and the Walker-Winn-Wyns.

On the other hand, I've had a somewhat unexpected fourteen days thanks to you lot and it will be nice to have a bit of time back today! It's not as if life wasn't already busy enough!

A fortnight on, I thought it would be interesting to end Thread 8 by looking back on why I started the first thread. This is what I had to say:

I read Raynor Winn's book The Salt Path and her other two books. I was looking forward to seeing the film at some point and to reading her next book. I felt sorry to read about the challenges the couple had faced, especially with regard to losing their family home and with Moth's health. Now, having read the article in today's Observer, I feel a bit stunned and am not sure what to think.

Despite having been on MN a long time, how wrong I was to only expect a handful of replies. You lot have certainly given me a lot to feel stunned about and to think about since, thank you not thank you! 😁

Thanks especially to all those who have given help in keeping the threads ticking along in a mostly unsalty fashion, and for all the laughs along the way.

3 or 5 seem plausible.

The Afghanistan story has taken up a lot of pages.

Chloe H originally said she thought there was more to come but it wouldn't be immediate. So that it's taking more time feels reasonable.

2 is someone's wishful thinking.
