I got an email from myself with my full name written on and my email address. It said “hello pervert….” And said it’s downloaded a spyware called Pegasus and will send a video of me to all my contacts! I kind of know it’s fake as I’m very boring and do nothing dodgy but I’m a little worried as I carry my phone everywhere with me such as in the bathroom, in bed etc. is this real? I’m doubting as it went into my VIP list and had my full name on it! Shall I start deleting my contacts?

Been around for years at this point. Never worried about the stupid "got you on cam" crap obviously-more a worry for men I'd think! But the last one I got did freak me out a bit that it supposedly came from my email so I worried I'd been hacked or something. Anyway I found out how they do it on reddit. As a PP said, some sort of email spoofing. They don't really have access to your account. Still bollocks and still just to be ignored. I'm actually amazed it's still going!

Dita73 · 16/07/2025 22:16

I had this too! They wanted $1500 to delete a video of me supposedly masturbating! I replied saying they can stick it up their arse for nothing and fuck off while they’re doing it!

Mastercom · 16/07/2025 22:24

There has been one where I live recently where they spoof your email address and send it to your actual name including a picture of your house (basically from Google maps). It’s fucking creepy and I think they’re obtaining it (name plus address) from data leaks. It just makes me more angry about the number of people out there who think this is a way to earn a living. Honestly, fuck off!

I’ve been on the other side of this - received a Facebook messenger message request from an unknown that contained rather compromising images of someone on my contacts list. I’m assuming taken from their device camera.

Are you sure it wasn’t from the contact themselves, anonymously?

NotLeavingWithoutTheSpringRolls · 16/07/2025 21:51

It’ll most likely have your real name because your mail app has (mistakenly) linked the email to you.

Edited

Or website (retailers etc) data leaks. There’s been thousands of them.

Bloody hell! That would freak me right out. Seems like they're properly ramping up the harassment, sick fuckers.

Yep, it was horrible, even after googling it and realising other people got it, it still freaked me out, it had a stalkerish vibe.

I dunno. Perhaps MN doesn't like the word 'police'? It's back now. Rather disconcerting.

Because it mentioned the most popular digital currency, I should think. MN gets a LOT of spam from chancers offering to recover your lost [digital currency].

orwellwasright2025 · 17/07/2025 04:21

It's deffo a scam.

But you should have a camera cover on both your mobile and any other cameras on devices. Despite what people would prefer to believe, hackers can definitely access cameras. You can buy stick on camera covers, that slide open and closed on Amazon and loads of other websites

HoppingPavlova · 17/07/2025 04:53

I’ve had lots of mails telling me unless I pay crypto etc they will release all of my dirty videos to my contact list etc so everyone will know what a pervert I am. Presume they are all scans but if not, meh, if they want to release videos of my face looking dull whilst on Mumsnet etc to everyone they can crack on, there would no nothing other than utter boredom for people if they secretly film me and release whatever that is to my contact list so I just shrug and delete.

Dancingintherain09 · 17/07/2025 17:58

Mark as spam and move on

Flozle · 17/07/2025 18:04

Had it loads. Forward it to

[email protected]

Then delete it and forget about it.

Anonymousforthisone2025 · 17/07/2025 18:07

My husband was most disappointed to not receive the porn photos of me after I deleted my one of these 🤣🤣

Chinsupmeloves · 17/07/2025 18:14

I had one similar and it even quoted my password, well part of it! Reported and deleted. X

Kittycatkin · 17/07/2025 18:14

I had one too from Pegasus it’s a scam, I deleted it, blocked it and changed my password. Would advise you to do the same.

Renoonabudget · 17/07/2025 18:21

OP they probably have your details from one of the hundreds of data leaks from big companies. They are just phishing, they will eventually come across someone who's been watching questionable "porn" who shits themselves and gets blackmailed. I've had one of these emails myself that's had my name and a historic password attached to it. I just reported the email as a phishing scam as I knew it was bullshit as I'm boring as fuck on the Internet, all my contacts would see would be me doomscrolling rightmove and mumsnet anyway. 😅

Isabellivi · 17/07/2025 18:31

It’s phishing. Don’t respond

YowieeF · 17/07/2025 18:41

Ignore it, I’ve had loads over the years and nothing ever happens.

Mumoftwoandcats · 17/07/2025 18:49

I’ve had similar. Delete and ignore, x

Lyraloo · 17/07/2025 19:20

Aeaffshb · 16/07/2025 17:57

But how comes it has my real name in the from bit?

People’s data gets sold all the time, it’s easy for these lowlifes to get your personal data. Just ignore it, probably 90% of people have had one of these!

BluntLion · 17/07/2025 19:37

Had this recently and I just deleted it. Definitely a scammer.

lostfather666 · 17/07/2025 20:02

restingbitchface30 · 17/07/2025 20:16

Mine said the same! Never been called a pervert in my life, I was rather amused! They wanted bitcoin in 2 days or they were sending videos of me to my contacts. Only vids of me would be ones with crumbs on me scrolling reels looking fugly! I just ignored it.
