I got an email from myself with my full name written on and my email address. It said “hello pervert….” And said it’s downloaded a spyware called Pegasus and will send a video of me to all my contacts! I kind of know it’s fake as I’m very boring and do nothing dodgy but I’m a little worried as I carry my phone everywhere with me such as in the bathroom, in bed etc. is this real? I’m doubting as it went into my VIP list and had my full name on it! Shall I start deleting my contacts?

I had this too it's a scam ignore delete

OtherS · 16/07/2025 19:00

I get loads of these, I don't have a webcam and I don't watch porn so I think I'm pretty safe. One included an old password, which was more worrying. But nothing happened when I ignored it. I now rather enjoy them - I like the "Hello pervert", but my favourite is when it informs me it's filmed me watching porn and enjoying "unforgettable pleasures". Does anyone really consider a masturbation session an "unforgettable pleasure"? Maybe I'm doing it wrong...

martinisforeveryone · 16/07/2025 19:01

@Aeaffshb check your email address here Have I Been Pwned: Check if your email address has been exposed in a data breach

It may be a data breach issue or it may, as PPs have said, be from a business selling on your details. Change your passwords.

Have I Been Pwned: Check if your email address has been exposed in a data breach

Have I Been Pwned allows you to check whether your email address has been exposed in a data breach.

I haven't had it. How scary! Shock I'd worry that someone had made a deepfake porno of me or something. Reassuring to know it's spam, and they have nothing.

Sorry you were scared @Aeaffshb

cyvguhb · 16/07/2025 19:07

I think pretty much everyone has had this email or a variant of it

Maybe you have use the Co-op or M & S or Harrods to name a few recent data breachs but tbh it isn't worth the time to even think about it. Its a minor inconvenience of life being so much online nowadays

Report, delete and forget about it

lalalalalady · 16/07/2025 19:11

I’ve had it it’s a scam. Delete it and don’t worry.

Bikergran · 16/07/2025 19:13

Ignore and delete it, but if you are not tech-savvy, find someone who is to check and clean your machine, just in case of spyware. A friend with a nerdy teenage child would be ideal, but failing that see how much a local computer shop would charge you to check it out and make sure you have all your security properly set up on it.

Aeaffshb · 16/07/2025 18:02

Thank you everyone! I was so scared. I hate these bloody idiots. Life is getting so scary now

No more scary than it was before. Did you never receive a chain letter in the 80’s or 90’s?

Concretejungle1 · 16/07/2025 19:20

Ive just looked and ive got one. It does not have my name in my email though. Its fake.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 16/07/2025 19:20

Magnir · 16/07/2025 18:49

Because it's got a word on the MN naughty list beginning with B.

Yes it's a scam, your details may have been taken in one of the many hacks, mine may have been several times, including the latest M&S hack

I didn’t know that word was verboten on here.

SALaw · 16/07/2025 19:21

I got one to my work email once that said “we have videos of you masturbating” and saying I had to send so many bitcoins to it to stop them circulating the videos. I wanted to reply to say “was it when I was at my desk or when I was in a meeting room?” but my IT team wouldn’t let me.

Overtheatlantic · 16/07/2025 19:22

Yep, we’re all perverts in my house. Very annoying.

summerday25 · 16/07/2025 19:23

I’ve had the exact same email twice. When I didn’t respond to the first they sent me further threatening ones 😂 Looked like it had been sent from me and was actually in my sent box, so did freak for a bit before I googled and found it was quite common!

lifeonmars100 · 16/07/2025 19:24

I've had that one , total scam, but they must get some who fall for it otherwise why carry on doing it.

Sera1989 · 16/07/2025 19:24

Must’ve been scary but count yourself lucky it’s just a fake email! I had a virus once that locked my computer with a screen asking for a ransom amount to be paid with a live video feed from my webcam… while I actually was masturbating

MarySueSaidBoo · 16/07/2025 19:26

My email was pawned when I checked online, Zynga (I play words with friends) and my fitness pal. And both had my password on. So I changed passwords on every site I used that on, add 2 step verification and have had about 3 other emails since saying the exact same information as the original one.

The sad part is that people will have handed money over to these pond scum.

muddyford · 16/07/2025 19:27

Aeaffshb · 16/07/2025 18:06

whst did muddyford write before it was deleted?

I dunno. Perhaps MN doesn't like the word 'police'? It's back now. Rather disconcerting.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 16/07/2025 19:28

Inexplicably, i think it was B**coin.

Hoardasurass · 16/07/2025 19:28

Aeaffshb · 16/07/2025 17:58

But how does it know my name? My name is not in my email address

They got your name and email address from a massive hack. Possibly from the m&s or co-op hacks

LBFseBrom · 16/07/2025 19:32

Just block and delete. I get similar stuff, most people do.

yikesnotagain · 16/07/2025 19:35

Ooh yes I had this exact same one.

Delete it. Don't click any links or attachments.

MummytoaMiracle01 · 16/07/2025 19:38

I had this back in January and it freaked me out at the time . Its a scam .. nothing came of it . If you google it , alot of people have received it .

Yabberwok · 16/07/2025 19:40

Someone posted the same thing a few months ago...scam

BunnyLake · 16/07/2025 19:44

Aeaffshb · 16/07/2025 17:57

But how comes it has my real name in the from bit?

Depending on who your email provider is you can forward it (unopened) to their phishing dept. You can probably google it. Say you don’t know who sent it in your name.
