DP angry with me over University Challenge

Teachingquestion · 16/07/2025 07:29

I wish I was joking.
I don't really care about university challenge at all. DP likes it. He watches it and tries see how many he can score. Normally I am just sitting there/having a cuppa , watching rather than answering all the questions. I just don't find quizzes that interesting. Last night, he asked me to join in. I did and I got double his amount of points. He said "oh for fucks sake don't win now just because you've decided to "
I know this sounds really trivial, but he had this look of absolute disdain on his face. Like a deep resentment. I am intelligent and in a good job that uses it, but I was only able to do that due to a good school being concerned with social mobility. My parents are intelligent but undereducated (again social mobility issues) I have friends of all types of intelligence and although I'm proud of my achievements, it's not the biggest thing for me. Also whisper I don't think university challenge is that hard, most of the time it's quite general knowledge put in a wordy question.
Dunno what my AIbU is really, just want a rant!

I've been dumped for being smarter than a man 😂 since then I usually go on a date to a pub quiz quite early on. Play a few boardgames and see how they react to losing (or winning, for that matter). Filters out the ones easily intimidated and emasculated. I like a bit of competition - intelligence is attractive.

I'm currently happily single, mind 😅

Edited

It really is a good filter. When my DH and I started dating we played lots of boardgames together. I often won. He was always happy to congratulate me and play again. I saw it as an important green flag and it made him more attractive in my eyes.

They are also probably picked to have complimentary knowledge.

So if you can keep pace with a team of 4x people with good memories that are all trained up and all have knowledge in different areas then you are doing a pretty good job.

Definitely. They will have one arts/humanities person, a maths one, a scientist etc. I’m quite surprised at the people who say they get all of the questions right as some of them are highly complex science questions that you wouldn’t know really unless you’d studied the subject at quite a high level.

Glowingup · 16/07/2025 14:56

An example:

In cytogenetics, what term describes the entire chromosomal complement of a cell which may be observed during mitotic metaphase?

Not really the sort of thing I’d have looked up as a kid on a trip to the library but who knows 🤷‍♀️

the answer is karyotype apparently

ooh this is really spiky for no reason

No where has anyone said they get all the answers right - and to suggest that I am disingenuous about the library is weird.

This has been a lovely thread apart from the odd few determined to cut down those tall poppies

Did anyone say that? I didn't see that. OP only said that she got double the points her husband did. So that could just be 2 points for all we know.

Good for you! I think it's great that you were encouraged from a young age by your mother, especially given that she didn't really get an opportunity to use her brain as much as she could. Keep on learning! (and don't cut yourself down to make a man happy)

Lollzi86 · 16/07/2025 15:45

Are you dating my ex? He used to get cross when I thrashed him at UC too. Hence why he is now an ex 😂

I love learning for its own sake and this thread has reminded me of my book. When I was younger, mum took us to the library a lot and I had a little notebook that if I saw something on telly , or there was a reference in a book I was reading that I wanted to know more about/a famous painting mentioned that I wanted to look up etc or a piece of music , I would write it in my notebook and go and then go to the library and look everything up and make notes. This will age me but I remember looking up every reference In that song "we didn't start the fire" (after taping it off the radio and slowly copying it out having no idea how to spell half of it 😀 )

We had a set of encyclopaedias at home and when I was at a loose end I would pick one and open it at random to read interesting facts. I've always loved learning for the sake of learning.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/07/2025 15:51

just remind him that it's only a quiz designed for teenagers😂

mmmarmalade · 16/07/2025 16:13

@Teachingquestion double down and wind him up a bit - sounds like he needs his fragile ego toughening up - tell him
"I know some men who find intelligent women veeeery attractive"
but - maybe he hasn't got a sense of humour either.

Well you said you didn’t think it was that hard and that it was just general knowledge so I assumed you got them all or most of them right. My mistake. I was making the point that it is very specialised and much harder than a general knowledge quiz so all kudos to you if you don’t find it hard. I have no desire to cut down any tall poppies 🤷‍♀️

InSpainTheRain · 16/07/2025 18:39

I dont like the sound of his reaction.at all. He sounds petty eith a fragile ego at best. But well done you! Dh and I always try to answer but we never worry who beats each other.

Elsvieta · 16/07/2025 20:51

"Oh, ok darling - if you don't like being with an obviously intelligent woman, we won't be needing the money from my job in future, will we?".

Nothing worse than a bad loser; what a pathetic manbaby. Oh well, at least he's a DP not a DH; you found out in time.

Kelz40 · 16/07/2025 21:56

And here my husband and I are watching murder documentaries on Netflix! 😂

That’s when you need to worry that you’ve had a look of disdain! 😂

Right. Women are not allowed to say or know that they are intelligent without being so self deprecating they dissolve into the wallpaper and disappear entirely.

No but the OP saying that UC is a piece of piss is undermining the huge achievement of those who go on there, many of whom are women. Why can’t she be proud of her own intelligence instead of saying “whisper I don’t think university challenge is that hard” and that it’s just general knowledge? I was pointing out that the questions are far beyond the average persons general knowledge and she accuses me of tall poppy syndrome when she was the one denigrating the achievement.

no , you've misunderstood

I didn't say it's a piece of piss

Also my Whispering that it was not that hard was intended towards my DP - meaning I'd never be able to say that to him

I do think as PP have also said that lots of it is general knowledge though - but that doesn't denigrate anyone on it - Far from it

UC is quite hard and a lot is not general knowledge. You are more intelligent than average and said so, which is ok. And I have problems objecting to those who say how clever they are! On the one hand I am from the UK and not puffing oneself up is almost a national religion. On the other hand I am of the sex that is XX and we have been taught since forever not to show how clever we really are in case it upsets men.
Double bind. One you are in with your DH. I don't know the solution unless he learns to be proud of you.

Why do you keep doing this? Saying OP has said things she didn’t say?

She didn’t say she gets all the questions right.

She didn’t say it’s a piece of piss.

One woman finding UC not that hard doesn’t undermine the other women who go on the quiz. Women’s intelligence is not that fragile that we curl up into a foetus and rock ourselves when another woman is better at something than us.

A friend of mine in the US told me that one semester of history at High School, his teacher decided that they’d do precisely this. I remember just how great it was to be able to teach history this way rather than being completely confined by a rigid, inflexible curriculum.
it’s a massively underrated song in its historical significance.

Your mum sounds great. I’ve just finished reading Poor by Katriona O’Sullivan and it was such an eye opener into how hard it is to climb out of poverty.

Your husband on the other hand sounds a bit pathetic over this.

I wouldn’t say it was general knowledge in how most people would interpret GK. Not unless they ate the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica for breakfast every morning. That was a little smug on your part, be honest.

I’ve never been on UC but I get what that poster is saying. I support everything the OP said, except that remark, which was unnecessary, no matter who it was aimed at.

Dontdoitdoreen · 17/07/2025 09:55

Have you been on UC? Did you you get your answers wrong? Is that what this is about?

No I haven’t. I get nearly all of them wrong when I watch it. It’s really fucking hard and I have fairly good general knowledge. It’s very impressive to get lots of them right and no need to say it’s “not that hard”.
If I could do 20 backflips and one handed cartwheels I could be proud of my considerable achievement without saying “it’s not that hard actually”. Or if I got a first in my physics degree, I could be proud of it without feeling the need to say it’s not that difficult an achievement.

The OP is the one who’s saying it’s just general knowledge. I’m saying it’s really hard to get a lot of UC questions right and pretty unusual and showing a high level of knowledge in many areas. Why is that tall poppy syndrome? Surely it’s the opposite.
