DP angry with me over University Challenge

Teachingquestion · 16/07/2025 07:29

I wish I was joking.
I don't really care about university challenge at all. DP likes it. He watches it and tries see how many he can score. Normally I am just sitting there/having a cuppa , watching rather than answering all the questions. I just don't find quizzes that interesting. Last night, he asked me to join in. I did and I got double his amount of points. He said "oh for fucks sake don't win now just because you've decided to "
I know this sounds really trivial, but he had this look of absolute disdain on his face. Like a deep resentment. I am intelligent and in a good job that uses it, but I was only able to do that due to a good school being concerned with social mobility. My parents are intelligent but undereducated (again social mobility issues) I have friends of all types of intelligence and although I'm proud of my achievements, it's not the biggest thing for me. Also whisper I don't think university challenge is that hard, most of the time it's quite general knowledge put in a wordy question.
Dunno what my AIbU is really, just want a rant!

His reaction would definitely turn me off, quite unattractive.
So he’s insecure about something, I guess we all are. Depends if he’s misogynistic or not I guess, would he have felt that way no matter who beat him? Or was it specifically about you?
Always beware of men who want a partner to support them, but don’t really want to share the spotlight. There are LOTS of them about and they will not wish you well in life, nothing worse than a ‘partner’ who wants to keep you down.

Teachingquestion · 17/07/2025 10:28

But I think it is general knowledge -
This is what I often find- an example might be

Q: What artwork by Rodin depicts blah blah blah
Me: What artworks by Rodin do I know (2) hmm the first one doesn't seem like it depicts that so I'll go for the other one

Obviously there are very very specific niche questions - but there are a lot of general knowledge ones that they complicate

another example might be something like

Born in ....., and related to the king of blah, who did blah blah blah...
Quite often these questions could be " Who first climbed Everest" but they describe it more fully and bury the question

I don't understand why me saying I don't find it that hard is so contentious
It's not a value judgement on anyone else- it's just true
It's like if I said I liked jumping when I was little and now I am good at jumping - it just is

Well yeah fine although I don’t really agree that they obscure it too much if you listen to the whole question. It’s more that the question is more often than not not something that the average person would know - especially the science ones (although different if you have a science background). And if you read my initial reply I was definitely not on the side of your DP in this. Where I queried was your insistence that it wasn’t that hard when to nearly everyone it’s extremely hard and somehow that was seen as not wanting women to be proud of their intelligence.

Edited

I'm insisting because it is not hard to me
The tall poppies thing was a response to the snarkiness of the not looking it up in the library thing.
I can only talk from my experience.
I have not once judged anyone else . In fact I went out of my way to say that intelligence in my daily life is not a currency.

I didn’t mean to snark about that - I just said the questions are not the average thing that you’d just get from an encyclopaedia in the library but maybe you did. I am in fact very impressed that you find UC easy. Surely intelligence is currency in your daily life as a teacher though? It would be worrying if it wasn’t.

You keep picking apart each thing I say
My posts have been measured calm and of a nice tone. There's nothing nefarious here

I never said there was 🤷‍♀️

Ignore the snipers OP!

How do you get on with Only Connect - that one totally floors me!

It's the end of your posts that are snippy and disingenuous

Posing a question that suggests a negative possibility

That really is difficult (well for me).

BunnyLake · 17/07/2025 11:39

There was a phenomenal guy on there once who knew every single geography based question posed, no matter how obscure to the average (or even over average) person. I think he became quite a sensation.

Teachingquestion · 17/07/2025 11:40

I've only ever seen clips of Only Connect. I really don't like quizzes/game shows etc
I have sometimes done a pub quiz but I wouldn't want to do it regularly

I can't do University Challenge but I'm a dab hand at Only Connect (until they get to the Semi Finals when it's just too damned difficult).

But you are a woman and therefore not allowed to have any confidence in yourself whatsoever. You are supposed to feel bad about yourself and shrink yourself to make others feel bigger.

Glowingup · 17/07/2025 10:11

No I haven’t. I get nearly all of them wrong when I watch it. It’s really fucking hard and I have fairly good general knowledge. It’s very impressive to get lots of them right and no need to say it’s “not that hard”.
If I could do 20 backflips and one handed cartwheels I could be proud of my considerable achievement without saying “it’s not that hard actually”. Or if I got a first in my physics degree, I could be proud of it without feeling the need to say it’s not that difficult an achievement.

The OP is the one who’s saying it’s just general knowledge. I’m saying it’s really hard to get a lot of UC questions right and pretty unusual and showing a high level of knowledge in many areas. Why is that tall poppy syndrome? Surely it’s the opposite.

You're being overly sensitive. I find learning some stuff hard. Others find it easy. That's life. Tbh it sounds like your ego is overly fragile.
