One million immigrants claiming benefits

1000 replies

AnxiousApocalypse · 16/07/2025 01:15

Just been reading the comments sections of the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail articles about the one million foreigners claiming benefits in the UK. It feels like the final nail in the coffin and a lot of people will feel even more justified in expressing their anger and hate towards immigrants. What happens when Reform win the next general election and come into power? Will people be rounded up en masse and put in detention centres like the USA?

I have limited personal experience

I can only comment on the fact my housemate is a Turkish immigrant. Moved into the HNo about 10 years ago was was working in a Turkish hotel (he's in his 50s).

About 2 years ago he jacked in it and started to claim universal credit and pip (no idea how he qualifies for pip as I witness him on a daily basis managing all the daily living descriptiors completely unaided/unsupervised/unprompted 🙄) and I remember overhearing another person who lived here telling him what to to UC and PIP.

My issue with him claiming is simply the fact I've looked up what British people would be entitled to if they moved and lived in Turkey and were unable to work-absolutley FUCK ALL. Wouldn't get a penny in Turkish benefits. (Also the fact that since he's been at home the past 2 years my bills inclusive rent has gone up not once, but twice to cover the fact he ran up such a massive electricity bill with having the heating on 24/7-now controlled remotely via the LL)

So why is he allowed to claim? And will most likely claim till pension age then get pension credit?

I could perhaps understand if it was done on a NI contributory basis but it's not. Basically simply because he married an English woman 20+ years ago he can claim very penny. (Although for some reason he's not on the electoral roll and can't legally vote?!)

AlertEagle · 16/07/2025 20:50

It shows 9.7% are claiming uc and fall under eu settlement scheme

No, it doesn't - it says 9.7% of people on UC in GB were in the “EU Settlement Scheme”.

In any case, you are moving the goalposts - I was answering the poster who claimed that the majority of EU citizens in the EU Settlement Scheme who were in receipt of universal credit were working - my link says that 47.1% of the EU citizens in the EU Settlement Scheme in receipt of universal credit were working (May 2025).

Sorry 🙊

bloody illegals, coming over here and stealing our jobs and our benefits simultaneously etc

as for those asylum seekers arriving with mobile phones, anyone would think they weren’t fleeing the 16th Century…how very dare they??

I’ll go back to reading the Daily Mail and reeducate myself…

where is the laughing emoji. Bring it back mumsnet!

The fact that we can steal jobs and benefits at the same time makes us amazing.😁

newshoestoday · 16/07/2025 21:27

Yeah, my dad immigrated in the eighties. He has paid into the system since he was about 20 and now he is 70 he is still working and paying tax as well as claiming his pension. Reform are fascists.

So based on your experience of one immigrant you want to punish or create policy for all immigrants? Guess what, 83.6% of claimants are British and Irish. Also I know a whole family that gets millions in benefits and has been for generations. Some of them are part German and barely work but are kowtowed to and praised if they so much as fart. Oh and they used to marry their cousins. Yes that family!

Sure, because no British man ever raped anyone...

What I and the posters on this thread who are trying for some sanity object to is the relentless and very racist way foreign nationals are all tarred with the same brush. It's embarrassing.

I won't report that crazy accusation against me because I believe you are probably genuinely mentally ill, so it's not your fault you imagine such things. I hope you get treatment.

Edited. Looks like MN found the post anyway.

By the mere act of trying to inject some sanity and balance, we are apparently responsible for rape. 🙄

I was wondering this too but couldn’t find the pp’s post. There’s lots of house building going on near me, thousands of houses on three estates. But the social housing element is tiny, affordable housing slightly more. Houses start at £380k.

Similar where I am.

No it isnt

I don't want to have to keep working till I am 67 but others who haven’t even paid into the system or for a very short time and come as adults are freeloading by going onto PIP and Uc and getting away with not working or not being made to get another job

i know it’s not everyone but why would the UK want even more non payees here and why are the unemployed not accountable for this.

Changingforthisthread123 · 16/07/2025 21:47

There are a certain proportion of people who are bad and do bad things. It’s terrible and we have laws to curtail this behaviour continuing.

British benefit claimants who do not wish to work are a massive problem but represent a small number of Britain's overall.

The workshy are a problem. Tax evasion is a crime. Massive corporations who generate billions for the economy and use shell companies are still bringing more to the table than they take. That is a positive impact.

I was talking about a post that claimed all muslims had a hatred for the west and wanted to convert us all. That hateful islamophobic post has been deleted.

Why did you think I was talking about you? Are you concerned you posted bullshit and hatred?

Changingforthisthread123 · 16/07/2025 21:50

Seeing the haste at which posts are removed and the types of posts that are removed (I read one before being taken down) makes me realise that mumsnet is censoring certain types of posts and this censorship is actually appalling! Keir Starmer
is clearly having a wide impact.

I haven’t posted any hatred or bullsh**t

all very subjective.

my Point is perfectly valid

Changingforthisthread123 · 16/07/2025 21:52

Factual posts complaining about soft treatment of the rapists of children are removed! Comments on published news stories!

wow. Mumsnet are protecting the identities of abusers of children.

Ah, so you are there in the room with him when he toilets, when he showers, when he gets dressed and undressed? You have detailed knowledge of his continence needs? You know exactly how he manages these things and whether he can do them in a timely manner.

You clearly know nothing about the PIP descriptiors (sic).

Eta: or you are telling porkies.

Then why did you think I was responding to you? I was responding to a racist/islamophobic post

What point were you making?

BackstoryCounts · 16/07/2025 21:56

The post I wanted to respond to has gone. But somebody wrote about all Arabs wanting to convert us to Islam. But they then wrote about a lovely Palestinian woman who spoke up against it. So surely it can’t be all Arabs then, can it? Shows the dangers of stereotyping I guess.

Extremists exist in all religions and nationalities. I strongly believe that most people however are in the middle just trying to do their best and get on with life.
