How did they find the money for this? Also, no checks to confirm what sort of people we are letting into the country.

This country is an utter disaster,m

These people are known to our government. The helped the British military and their identities were accidentally leaked three years ago,They are being brought here to save them from death or torture by the Taliban.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 15/07/2025 19:36

Who’s paying?

StarlightRobot · 15/07/2025 19:37

Where does the £7 billion figure come from?

Littleredraincoat · 15/07/2025 19:38

As someone who typically thinks we should crack down on immigration. Actually I think this is right. It was our error that put these people in danger and it is right we should rectify it and keep these people safe.

What is not right is that it was done without parliamentary scrutiny and there was no accountability. Parliament has procedures in place for closed sessions with no cameras or visitors. "That the house situation in private". I have no problem not knowing the ins and outs of what is happening, but I would appreciate that my MP can work on my behalf.

SoSoLong · 15/07/2025 19:38

Where did you get £7bn from? The article says 400 mil already spent and 450 to be spent in the future.

The data leak has put people's lives at risk, that's what the government should be ashamed about.

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/07/2025 19:40

I suppose if begs the question of whether we can we trust a government department which allowed such sensitive data to be leaked in the first place to have the necessary tools and processes in place to ensure that the people being resettled are actually the vetted people who are the data subjects in question. I’m not so sure we can. Hence whilst it’s perfectly correct that we are resettling people put at risk, the lack of government and parliamentary scrutiny and oversight is concerning.

Libby00 · 15/07/2025 19:41

It's 20k people plus their dependents.

The Speaker should be investigating whether proper Parliamentary processes weren't followed to protect individuals or to protect the government reputation.

IthasYes · 15/07/2025 19:41

I'm also against open door invite yourself here immigration and feel we need to act urgently re small boats.

However these people worked for us against the taliban they have shown themselves to support us and western values

We let them down and exposed them and I'm glad we are helping them.

Tealpins · 15/07/2025 19:44

At least their maths is likely to be better than yours, OP.

£7bn?!

Bringbackspring · 15/07/2025 19:44

These "sort of people" risked their lives to help our military when we went to war in their country. We gave them hope. Then we abandoned them and left them to face almost certain death or worse. It's shameful our government hasn't done more to help then sooner.

PandoraSocks · 15/07/2025 19:44

Libby00 · 15/07/2025 19:41

It's 20k people plus their dependents.

These people, as pointed out above, are known to the government, helped the government and now have been put at risk of torture and death by the actions of a government employee. All of which the Tories covered up.

So what would you do?

Sharptonguedwoman · 15/07/2025 19:46

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 15/07/2025 19:36

Who’s paying?

Don't care, these people are under threat of death because of us.

ExtraOnions · 15/07/2025 19:47

I assume the secrecy has been to protect those individuals … either when they were in Afghanistan, or now they are here.
The Mail report may well lead to these people being put it harms way again. Slow hand-clap.

Itchybritches · 15/07/2025 19:47

I do think it’s the right thing to do, as some idiot has compromised their safety….but I’m blown away by the actual number of people involved, and it’s likely that in addition to being repatriated they’ll also have a good case to sue to government.
But in my opinion, added to the current immigration issue, again I feel we’re causing too much of a cultural clash by the speed of immigration of people from cultures too dissimilar from those in our country without the necessary consultations, conversations or planning.

These people helped the British Military when they were in Afghanistan. Their identities were leaked so their’s , and their dependents’, lives were at risk. If we have to pay for that cock up, then tough shit imo.

StarlightRobot · 15/07/2025 19:58

OP, I still don’t understand how you have landed on a figure of £7 billion. That is not what the article says. You should either explain the basis for the number or change your post title because it is spreading misinformation.

What actual cultural clash has affected you?
does it stop you going to church?
wearing short skirts (if you want)?
participating in sport?
going to the theatre?
going to the cricket?
having afternoon tea?
eating fish and chips by the seaside?

what “British culture” are you being stopped doing?

yes there are dreadful people in all “cultures” who get headlines

do you relate to the drunken holiday makers along Magaluf strip? Because they are portrayed as “British abroad” in a variety of press.

Davros · 15/07/2025 20:07

I definitely heard £7bn on the BBC today

Our country invaded theirs. Some locals helped our military. Our military leaked their identities - the identities of people the Taliban will consider as enemies of the state.

We should roll out the red carpet. Invading their country, then ratting out their informants. Ouch.

They were anti the Taliban. That's a good start.

And frankly, we're in no position to sit in judgment, since it was OUR government that put them and their families at risk.

Frankly, this error should not have been able to have been made. While it was human error on the part of the soldier who sent the email, if the department's security systems were up to scratch, it shouldn't have been possible for him to share that data.

DonnaHadDee · 15/07/2025 20:23

We invaded their country. As with Iraq, it was a widely seen as a stupid decision at the time. Remember the protests about it? What did we expect ...
