To be pissed off that my DH is not going to McDonalds now and now I have to cook?

Sophiehoney · 13/07/2025 16:25

DH was going out at 4pm to rake DS12's friend home. He suggested he get McD's on the way back for himself and the kids (he knows I have a salad prepared for myself and that I don't like McDs) I said great, I wont have to cook.
I was in the shower when he left so I rang him to check he knows what DD7 wants from MCDs. He said he doesn't want McDs any more, he's going to go to the new local chippy instead. I said but the kids don't like the chunky chips you get from the chippies and he said well he's not going to two different places.
I said great, I suppose I'll just have to cook them something.
He said he doesn't understand why I'm so bothered, I would have had to cook anyway icfhe hadn't suggested getting something and I said, because I wasn't expecting to, I'd written it off in my mind, I haven't thought of what to cook and it's now 16:20 on a school night.
He thinks I'm just being argumentative and that I should just cook or we shpuld just tell the kids to just eat the damn chips.

Who's right?

Sorry I’m probably feeding the trolls here but this is really getting my goat.

My kids favourite takeaway is sushi. This week for dinner they’ve had homemade katsu curry, slow cooked belly pork with a korean glaze, full roast dinner…but they’ve also had frozen pizza, frozen out of a bag paella and frozen bacon and cheese turnovers (for the kid who doesn’t like paella) because well life mostly, but also because we’re running down the freezer/fridge/cupboard because we go on holiday soon.

It is perfectly possible to get a balance!

Jk987 · 13/07/2025 18:32

Simple. Just don’t cook. They can make cheese on toast and stuff.

I'm with @Poonu here. Objectively MacDonalds is shit. No dietitian has a good word to say about it. I don't know why anyone would give it to their kids. And it's not snobby to like good-quality food; it's taking care of your kids and yourself in the same way that doing exercise or cleaning your teeth is taking care - with the caveat that those on very low incomes would struggle to afford decent food because crap food is artificially cheap, sadly.

I'm not struggling somewhere in life, thanks very much. I'm just fine.

Gosh, McDonald's is s*. Raise your bar and you and your DH feed your kids properly

If you think the above statement is an acceptable way to speak to someone then I don't know what to tell you. OP never once said her DC eat McDonald's regularly. You are also taking the opportunity to bash someone to make yourself feel better. Your lecture is not needed.

They're having pizza. Which quite frankly is a fancy version of cheese on toast 😂

OP, you should have seen the massive strop I had when my Just Eat order wasn't delivered! When you're not planning to cook, it's like a (v) mini holiday, a night off, relax. Then having to think quick and know you'll be disappointed with anything else, well, just ruins my mood.
Good news is that Just Eat responded v quickly and refund on it's way.
Oh, and for those that are interested, it was a KFC for myself and DS. Bad mum here.

Someonelookedatmypostinghistorysoichanged · 13/07/2025 18:36

Ya both (all) bu for being so fussy
maccys 1 no 3 yes
salad 1 yes 3 no
chippy 1 yes 3 no
stop pandering,

Only a bad mum if you didn’t order chicken gravy….

KFC chips must be dipped in the gravy.

As someone who's DH had a small chain of fish & chip shops I'm wondering WTF is wrong with chip shop chips? We often used to have queues going down the street for our fish & chips - especially on Sunday evenings like this when the weather was good, people had spent the day on the beach & no-one could be bothered to cook for tired, hot children.

That doesn't sound like balance. There's not a single vegetable or legume in there. There's also so much processed food, pork and red meat which is awful for you. I'm all about balance but that's absolutely not it.

I love chip shop chips. And I always have veg with my fish and chips as mushy peas are food from the gods.

TheSilentSister · 13/07/2025 18:47

@Tiredandtiredagain - oh yes, DS insists on the gravy, best bit.

Agree, chip shop chips with loads of salt n vinegar, delicious.

Nobody's on here asking for nutrition advice, lol.

Are you unfamiliar with the dishes in the post you quote? You dont seem to know the ingredients of them

Sophiehoney · 13/07/2025 18:48

I just wrote a long post listing all the nutritious and delicious meals my kids have eaten this week, to justify my mcdonalds/pizza night.
But sod that. I have deleted it. I did not ask for nutrition advice. I shall not be justifying myself. I shall be enjoying my evening in my garden with a glass of wine and a clear conscience. I suggest some of you chill out and do the same xx

In what world do you live in where a roast dinner doesn’t contain vegetables??

And since when have you had a katsu curry with a red meat?? It’s chicken breast, which in case you are interested we bread by hand for the curry!

I didn’t realise I also had to list the side veggies that came with the dishes-we obviously didn’t just serve them roast pork belly without sides!! Or list the fact that they eat me out of house and home on fruit!

LucyMonth · 13/07/2025 18:51

This was at most mildly irritating. Certainly not “let’s take this to Mumsnet to see who’s right in the marriage” material. Especially since it ended up being absolutely nothing in the end.

I love them and so does DH 😋😋😋

But for some reason I've never been able to get my kids to eat them. In fact, they barely eat chips at all, they're not into them.

Good for you. You don't have to justify the food you feed your family to anybody. I don't know who some of the posters on here think they are.

FortyDegreeDay · 13/07/2025 18:54

Perhaps just me but think it’s a bit selfish that a parent would buy themselves a takeaway and eat it infront of their kids, rather than just getting a takeaway they could all enjoy equally together.

They weren't frozen but yeh, if I'd accepted McDonalds, I'm OK with pizza 😂

Just make sure he serves them with a massive salad!!

It's fine. As Aristotle said, all things in moderation.

Some people need to get their judgy wedgies out of their arses.

Surely even people without school-age children talk about 'school nights' if you've got work the next day?

Exactly. We talk about going to the pub on a school night if it's a weekday.

Kids should eat the chip shop chips. They’re just chips, same as McDs and they are being fussy.

There not though are they ,?
I love chips from the chippy ,I m also quite partial to MacDonald ,s fries, but they don't taste anything alike.
