Muslim women who dress modestly...

If you're at the beach and you want to paddle in the sea, are you able to roll up your trousers? Genuinely wondering as I saw a muslim family on the beach today having great fun. The kids were paddling in the sea. The women weren't but this question sprung in my head.

@modestsometimes “We are not discussing women not being allowed an education
We are not discussing Afghanistan”

How convenient…would be a bit difficult to make your ‘it’s completely free choice’ argument if you looked at the horrendous oppression of those Muslim women square on. No education, no rights and no free choice about covering up. One and the same re Islamic religious oppression of women.

No, like the other poster you are mixing up two things. No, oppression is not acceptable, inhumane force and punishment is not acceptable.

That does not mean that Muslim and other women of other religions never choose to cover up.

Two different issues. You are right to protest against women not being allowed a religion or being inhumanely treated or treated less than equal. You are not right to say women are not allowed to choose to cover up or dress modestly.

downwiththatsortof · 12/07/2025 22:49

@modestsometimes I'm not harassing anyone - I'm giving my opinion - which is that the defence of women being treated equally and that includes wearing what they want and it is well known that many women do not wear this clothing through free choice so I will call out bullshit when I see it.

And whilst we're on the topic of judging - I don't appreciate Muslim men and women judging me for wearing western clothes in a western society and so this idea of "modesty" becomes all encompassing - so no, I don't accept it's a free choice.

DrowningInSyrup · 12/07/2025 22:45

It's just old fashioned 'she's wearing immodest clothing' actually sounds less judgemental than 'she's wearing revealing clothing'. The latter suggests she should cover up. Anyway semantics. I'm off to sleep.

I feel like modest/immodest is more judgemental whereas revealing describes what's actually happening.
I'd only use it in reference to actually revealing clothing - bum, boobs, willy etc actually out and and not covered at all, and if it's in a place where it's legal (eg topless on a beach) then it's not my really concern tbh. I am not keen on scrunch bum leggings either, mainly for hygiene reasons, but I wouldn't judge a person if they like them.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/07/2025 22:51

"So as long as they're not wearing tight and revealing clothes (men and women) they can wear what they want."

Most clothes become tight looking when wet.

Morgenrot25 · 12/07/2025 22:54

The choice aspect is a difficult one too.
How can any of us determine how free our choices really are or whether they're affected, perhaps unknowingly, by external factors?

Beachtastic · 12/07/2025 22:59

I make a lot of "choices" so as not to offend the accepted norms of my family and social circle. I'm not sure it's a choice so much as fitting in with what's expected of me. Deviating from it would seem deliberately weird, which might explain my lack of desire to do so.

Pre 1980s women in Muslim countries wore the same clothes as everyone else.

My mum was a fashion model back in the 1960s and she travelled all over the world. She’s shown me photos of her travels including to Iraq, Iran, Algeria etc. Women worked in offices, shops, salons, they were models, photographers. She partied with models who wore the same fashions as western world. Who would have thought the world would have gone so backwards

Edited

Oh, so you think in Iran Iraq and Algeria women don't work in shops and offices? Oh my, I don't think this thread is enough for all the educating you need
Doesn't take long to Google pictures of those countries.
Western fashion is usually brought in by colonisers as previously said, ever heard of France in Algeria? As one example

Policeofficerpanda · 12/07/2025 23:01

@modestsometimes ah yes that makes complete sense now you’ve explained it.

So we have a group of extremely visibly oppressed Muslim women wearing covered up clothes through no choice of their own (and posters on this thread can’t claim they are choosing it - as they are with other examples given - as these poor women’s oppression is so obvious) and then we also have a completely different group of Muslim women wearing covered up clothes but those women definitely chose to do it themselves with no outside influences at all and the fact that they are all Muslim women is just a total coincidence. Got it.

To all those giving the OP a hard time. YOU are the problem!
It is not a bad thing to want to find out more about other cultures and religions.
When you try and make asking questions a taboo you put up more barriers which create miss understands, miss conceptions and we all know where that ends up.

You all think you are being PC white knights, but you are just making problems worse.

Well this 100%. We are still in the land of white saviours - coincidentally when all the live aid at 40’stuff is kicking round.

it’s a good question. If I’m walking a long the beach I might on the spur of the moment go for a paddle - I’d be sad for and person who could do this because of their sex.

They look on anxiously because they can't get in the sea with their children. The husbands dive in and swim out to the breakwaters and have a great time.

Not dramatic 'loll"

Your comment reeks of racism and ignorance about other cultures. You couldn’t care less about Muslim women. There are good and bad people in every culture.. there are drunk druggie white men who wouldn’t mind selling their girlfriends for drugs similarly like there are controlling Muslim men who force their women to cover. On the other hand there are solid provider and protector of their families too who are both white black and Muslims so it please broaden your horizons!

Morgenrot25 · 12/07/2025 23:05

.....based on how this thread has gone, I surely cannot be the only one who realises it's true intent now, can I?

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 12/07/2025 23:06

Morgenrot25 · 12/07/2025 20:18

Eh?
It's really none of anyone else's business how or why another person swims/paddles or not. Muslims are individuals, just like non-muslims.
Minding your own business isn't remotely close to being a problem.

Actually it is very much other people’s business. Is there a group of men in the uk who are preventing women doing something because of their sex. If the answer to this is yes, it is every woman’s business here.

Look at all the assumptions and judgements on this thread though.

@Morgenrot25 People are allowed their opinions. Do you feel the need to shut them down?

starshollowtownselectman · 12/07/2025 23:11

I’d honestly be more worried about the ability to help your child should anything happen in the sea if you are wearing a lot of material such as an abaya

From the start I've had my suspicions about the intent of this thread. Nothing has changed.

Yesterday I saw a young girl (primary school aged as I knew the uniform) heading off to school on a day that’s set to hit 30+ degrees (already at least 24 at the time k saw her) in a hijab, a thick cardigan over her uniform and woolly tights.

Damn right I’m going to judge the parents, the religion and the culture that thinks that’s a good way to dress on a boiling hot day. And no, that’s not covering up to protect you from the sun. That’s making a GIRL suffer in the heat for a stupid and backwards way of thinking, where you call it faith, culture, tradition or whatever.

Yes.

Quite! No self awareness whatsoever.

Yes, I already mentioned safety.
Wear full coverage swim gear, in a swim safe colour, if you like, but never enter water in clothes that will make you less safe (unless it's a life or death no option situation). This advice applies to anyone.

I go to an aqua fit class. A Muslim lady had swimwear on covering her arms and legs. The pool attendant told her she couldn’t get in the pool, dressed like that! I reported him, I was disgusted.
