Why can’t parents look at the term dates for DC schools

Schools here, broke up yesterday. Today on the way to shopping, I saw about 4 sets of kids and parents with children wearing school uniforms. I have friends who have DC attend these schools (2 schools) and there are no day trips or classes today.

My friends knew the term dates as on parents pages and WhatsApp groups

OP posts:

Just for info for the numerous posters who don’t realise - some counties have different school term dates. Everyone has broken up for the summer here (state, England). They go back 26th August.

Which county?

Very late to break up. Schools here have been off 2 weeks or more!

Where's "here?"

Purplepepsi · 11/07/2025 18:19

Schools my kids have been at have a thing on their website where you can link the school calendar to your phone calendar it's sooo good!

GRex · 11/07/2025 18:31

The most likely explanation is that your friend has the wrong dates, or the kids were going to school for some other reason; a sports match, music event, etc. 99% of children know when the end of term is, even if their parents need reminders.

You sound like a delight….

What is the point of this thread though? Why is OP so affected by it? Must be heat rage haha 😁

DS2 breaks next Friday and DS1 breaks after him on the Tuesday, both are in Oxfordshire, just different towns.

To show of her superior parenting that SHE never ever dropped a clanger.

Not that I believe 4 families possibly got it wrong for end of term.
Inset days, random dress down days, sponsor money for stuff I can totally get people forget about.
But no kid gets up the day after end of term day and goes to school!

Which county?

Leicestershire usually.

BestieBunch · 11/07/2025 19:22

Jeeezzzz, it’s clearly an oversight! It’s not like they left them at the school gate for the day.

Ive got 3 children in 3 different schools/college, despite writing it in the diary if it wasn’t for group chats then yes I would have got it wrong too!

My friend who has two DC - just finished years 2 and 4, at the school. Only got school clubs going on in August as the teachers will be on holiday and most families here go on holiday now, as slightly cheaper than later in the month when rest of England and Wales are off.

Edit - Each school has a different uniform. One wears dark red polo shirts.

Edited

England and Wales aren’t off at the same time. In fact last year there was a whole weeks difference between schools here and the other side of the bridge when it came to the Autumn term.

CaR1282 · 11/07/2025 19:55

I work at the school my child goes to, and I was convinced they break up a day later than they actually do this term.

Which county?

Leicestershire. Sometimes our Easter and half term breaks differ too. It’s linked back to the hosiery trade many years ago when they had a factory shut-down across the whole industry at the beginning of July so schools did the same.

We have the same issue across the city/county boundary lines here.

All our local schools break just after lunch on the last day anyway, so you couldn't miss it because you'd have had to collect your child early the day before.

Yes that too schools tend to close early on the last day of term. Op must be mistaken. Could be shes seen them after an early close on the last day.

As I say random stuff i can see parents getting wrong. I have a habit of forgetting dress down days, I think its autopilot in the mornings and the randomness off them.

But not the last day of term. I just don't buy it that 4 kids or possibly multiple kids in these families did all the last day stuff then were persuaded to get their school stuff on the next day. Nah just didn't happen

brunettemic · 11/07/2025 22:44

Everyone is fallible. I’m assuming you are too.

Scentedjasmin · 11/07/2025 22:54

I hate working out term dates. They always list the inset days separately.

Laserwho · 12/07/2025 12:38

What difference does it make to you why they are wearing uniform? You don't have kids at these schools? Why are you looking at kids clothes and why do you care?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/07/2025 15:02

Why do you care?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/07/2025 17:58

Maybe the kids had all grown out of summer clothes so wore uniform to go clothes shops on first day of holiday. Or they were only clothes clean…

Surely it's way more likely that OP got the holiday dates wrong. Or mistook the uniform for a different school, which still has a week to go.

Oh yes they somehow grew out of their day clothes overnight, but not their old uniform...

yakkity · 12/07/2025 19:25

What kind of school is it that the kids and parents were not aware of all the final day of the year stuff? And bringing home bag loads of crap? Abd the special assembly etc.
anyone that unaware is not going to look online for info. But I struggle to see how anyone would not know. There is so much going on in the last day. It’s nit like the last day of hang term

Moll2020 · 12/07/2025 19:44

I send out messages to parents reminding about INSET days, holiday dates, term start/finish dates. There is a scrolling banner on the website, plus the term dates and INSET dates are on there. You can guarantee a couple of parents won’t have a clue and will turn up on Monday 21/7 but won’t be back on the right day in September!
