Why can’t parents look at the term dates for DC schools

Schools here, broke up yesterday. Today on the way to shopping, I saw about 4 sets of kids and parents with children wearing school uniforms. I have friends who have DC attend these schools (2 schools) and there are no day trips or classes today.

My friends knew the term dates as on parents pages and WhatsApp groups

I don't fully understand the OP... they saw some kids in school uniform but those schools have broke up already, so they are saying why didn't those parents check the term dates?

Personally, I would have noticed them and not given it another thought. They'll notice when they get to the gate and adjust their day accordingly. Ours are at school for another week and a half, so I'm surprised some schools are off already. Maybe your friends have the wrong dates?

OK - so you are being unreasonable. I no long her school age children - but a quick Google tells me end of term is around 22/23 July this year.... So I assume you're kids must go to private school (fine no judgement) but surely you realise most schools haven't broken up yet??
And even if they had - it's quite easy to make a mistake on this - dont be so judgy.

Just because some areas break up on the 22/23 July, other areas break up at different time. Leicestershire for example breaks up a week earlier than all the surrounding counties - because in the olden days when there would be holiday weeks when all the local factories shut down at the same thing, the Leicestershire factories would shut down a week earlier than the other counties. Was a way to spread the load of people going on holiday across the summer.
My niblings tend to go back to school in the last week of August whereas my DC would end up going back to school a week or two later, depending on the way the days played out. They don’t like it at the time but they love the fact that they can break up sooner than my kids and my sis and BIL love the fact that it’s usually a cheaper week to go on holiday rather than peak summer season.
And that’s goes all state schools in Leics - I have no idea if the private schools in the county break up even earlier!

It's very easy get a date wrong. Some people are bad with dates. Maybe they checked the calendar and saved it incorrectly into their personal calendar. They may have 3 different children in 3 different schools, they may be involved in multiple sports clubs, they may have a job that involves a lot of planning and organising. And so they dropped the ball on this one thing. No need to be so smug because you didn't. Honestly I would be more concerned about how alert the children are, it very strange that they didn't speak up or notice that everyone talked about end of year.

Some people think being 'scatty' is cute. It is not. It is just another word for badly organised. Hence all the posts about forgetting parties, non uniform day, and now even the bloody end of term!
Most of us work and if you made such errors at work, you would be pulled up on it.
Get a family calendar and mark everything important on it. Everything. And yes, that means reading your emails, gingerly through your kids' reading bags for letters, asking other parents if necessary.

WaitedBlankey · 11/07/2025 12:10

It's the pilot episode of Motherland, they were taking part in an reenactment.

JustSawJohnny · 11/07/2025 12:11

All a bit judgy of a simple mistake, really.

Bonbon249 · 11/07/2025 12:11

They might have been on their way to something that required the children to be more formally dressed. In any case, it's not any of OP's business. Just let them get on with it.

@nfg I kid you not but this happened to me!! I, grandmother, look after 2 grandchildren who live in my house. I live in one region, one grand child goes to school in another region and the other grand child goes to school in yet another region. each of those regions have different start date after holidays. a couple of years ago the grandson said he started back on the thursday. my region started back on the wednesday. and my grandaughter started back on the following monday. wednesday morning just scrolling through facebook and noticed all those picture of new school starts! thought wow! that is where grandson goes to school. checked website and school started that day, 9.10am grandson is still in his bed and meant to be in school at 9am. school is 30 minute drive from me!! every one of his friends was late for their first day back!! it was easy to get confused!!

Er....why exactly was that worth typing?

Emmz1510 · 11/07/2025 12:13

Were these very young children? I suppose it’s a bit less likely to happen with older kids who would waste no time telling their parents. I’m struggling to think of a legitimate reason why they would still be wearing uniform.
Even if people do check the term dates and are aware of them, people can get their days mixed up in the week and, say, think it’s 5th July when it’s actually the 6th. I would assume though that the last day was a shorter day so they would have known it was the last, unless this doesn’t happen in all schools. Perhaps some kids/families who live chaotic lifestyles where perhaps alcohol or drugs are an issue and maybe attendance is poor, would have a poor grasp of the dates.
Anyway yes I would feel sorry for them. I went to uni once when it was a bank holiday and was sitting in the foyer area of my lecture building wondering why it was deserted….

....yes, Miss. Sorry, Miss...

NicolaCasanova · 11/07/2025 12:15

Maybe they have an induction morning/day or revision activity or reward or some other reason to be in school in uniform?

NicolaCasanova · 11/07/2025 12:16

Having said that, SIL is a primary school teacher to some seriously disadvantaged kids in the USA and this happens with her class every holiday.

Cornishmumofone · 11/07/2025 12:17

Lots of secondary schools do a transition day and ask children to wear their school uniform. It may be that these children are transitioning from private primary (which may have already broken up) to a state secondary.

Kazzybingbong · 11/07/2025 12:22

Bollocks. There’s no way a parent doesn’t know that the kid has finished for summer. It’s half day and coming out with all their books and stuff.

They clearly haven’t broken up and you need to get a life.

Dollymix2044 · 11/07/2025 09:48

Did you let them know tjat theres no school?

With great relish i would imagine

MoreChocPls · 11/07/2025 12:23

If correct, that’s some shit parenting. Poor kids.

dottiedodah · 11/07/2025 12:28

I haven't had kids that went to school in UK yet so this might be a dumb questions. But isnt the last day of school somehow special? Like, Im used to last day of being very obvious where the kids go to school, get their report cards, have ice cream, there is a show/concert in school, the kids changing schools (like elementary to secondary) sing a farewell song etc.

Not a dumb question.
Last day of school is normally a big fuss especially in primary schools. Secondary not so much.

Four families getting it wrong seems very unlikely more likely something else has happened, either miss communication by school or an emergency closure like no water or powercut.

I've had the powercut one, school were told their power needed to be turned off. They gave parents 10mins notice, via twitter, and no power meant not switchboard or phones other than staffs personal mobiles!

Bedknobsandhoovers · 11/07/2025 12:41

Training days. Prior to retirement I was a teacher.

We usually started training days at 8.30 in the hall. Huge windows overlooking the entrance.

Every time there were a number of children coming into school and then a couple of minutes later leaving again.

Seems very early to break up, round here they have another week and a half to go.

My childs senior school breaks up on the 30th July and returns on the 2nd Sept. We have longer half terms. Many schools are different nowadays.

Do you know the term dates for every year group in the school? Do you have kids in the school? If not, I would not make a comment about it, as how could you know? The parents could have very well made a mistake and if they did, so what? Or they could have school and you are not aware of it. In my dc primary school. Half the school got out last Friday. Now half of those left in the school get off this Friday. And the last bit finish the following week. The ones that finish first might assume all are off. Not all schools finish at the same time.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 11/07/2025 12:54

At secondary it's the kids who get all the reminders including spending last day with next year timetable and new classes in DC school saying hello and playing games.

Here all secondary sixth forms wear same uniform as rest of the school - wasn't a thing when I was at school - and they do go in on a quiet day for their induction so school trip day or teacher training. So if they were secondary I wonder if it could be that.

Both primary's mine went to no way a parent could have missed end of school year - so much lead up so many reminders.

Laserwho · 11/07/2025 12:57

My kid was in the school choir and went to competitions in the town hall. This was usually during the summer holidays and weekends and they had to wear full school uniform. Of course if you didn't have children in the choir you wouldn't know this. This also applies to award days, trips and sports events on non school days. Many kids are school ambassadors and attend events in school uniform on non school days Don't be so judgemental op.
